Am I mad to have gone off the name Gracie.....

......because of the story that's just been in the news of the Gracie born to a 14yr old who has the youngest (29yr old) grandparents in the UK??

I am about 5wks off giving birth and the name I have liked consistently through this pregnancy has been Grace/Gracie but that story has really made me think again. Think it is partly me just being a bit of a middle class snob and wondering if Gracie is actually quite a chavvy name or will possibly become one.

What does anyone think??

It's a very popular name at the moment. I must admit I'm not a huge fan. What about Lily?

it's one of my DDs' middle name

frankly, I regret it a bit (mostly because it's Anna Friel's dds name)

I don't think it's 'chav' but extremely ubiquitous across all classes/socio economic groups.

I don't think that a 14yr old calling her baby Gracie would put me off. However, I think it is a cute name that suits a child but not an adult. What about Grace?

Honestly: Grace is gorgeous, classic, timeless, classless.

Gracie, as a first name I'm not keen on. Fine as a nickname.

Well I actually prefer Grace but DH isn't as keen so the compromise was Grace as her given name (which she could also then use as an adult if she preferred) but use Gracie as her nickname.

Also thinking of Edie - any thoughts?

Grace is a lovely name and Gracie is nice as a nickname. It's a classic and popular name.

In that case, go with Grace and Gracie as a nn.

Don't like Edie and usually I love old women names.

Edie is nice as nickname for Edith. Or how about Elsie, short for Elisabeth?

It's just really popular that's all. I prefer gracie to Grace. Grace is a bit buttoned up imo.

What about Greta?

Anna Friel keeps her Gracie out of the spotlight, so not sure why her having one would put anybody off the name Confused

We're really struggling to find something that we all like (4 of us) or hasn't already been taken by close friends.

Other on our long list are:
Rose (but some friends have recently used this)
May
Daisy (DD loves this but I think its a bit too popular)
Amy (DS has consistently said this but I am not keen)
Martha (was originally our first choice for DD but she didn't look like one)
Stella

I love Maisy too but some other friends have just named their daughter this (and to be honest I hadn't really thought about it until their DD was born).

Used to think that girls names were easier than boys but am now not so sure!! What other old lady names are there?

from you list I like Martha and Stella. I think Daisy and Maisy are a bit too girlywurly.

I like Lilith but would get shortened to Lili which is a cousin's name.

I also sort of like Lola but does it sound too much like a hooker's name???

I love Stella and Edie, both gorgeous.

Gracie is a bit wet sounding and I am always wary of Grace...what if she ends up a 6 foot rugby player? (ok maybe not that likely but you know what I mean).

No to Gracie. Grace is OK but too popular, I think.
What about Taffeta?
Taffeta Grace is pretty and unusual :)

I like Grace. Think Gracie is good as a nickname but not a real name.

How about Laila if you like Lola?

Rose -- would you like Rosalie or Romy?
May -- Lovely as a first name
Daisy -- I agree it is very popular, and also a name a girl would outgrow. Do you like Greta or Marguerite?
Amy -- I agree with you here. I think it is very 1970s.
Martha -- this name makes me think of hens for some reason.
Stella -- Lovely

I love May and Stella from your list. Edie is lovely but as a nn for Edith. I agree that Grace and Gracie are very popular and that Gracie is a nn and not a real name.

Sorry, but I never understand the popularity of Grace/Gracie. It sounds like Greasy to me.
People have made lovely suggestions,
Daisy, Lois, Nancy, so classic and pretty.

I love Romy but my OH is not convinced. I like Lara too so will try living with that for a while. I really love old lady names - Mabel, Maud, Esme - but not sure if they will stand the test of time. Also do they pass the PM test - could she be the Prime Minister with that sort of name???
