Scarlett - Receiving Lots of Negative Comments

Only name me and my other half have managed to agree on for our DD is Scarlett however receiving lots of negative comments which frankly seem a bit snobby to me ? that the name is common or even worse ?chavvy? . Is this true?

I don?t move in ?chav? circles I?m a 37 year old, professional who works in London and lives in a very affluent part of Hampshire. So have no idea about ?chav? names. I can?t imagine our daughter will be socially disadvantaged by calling her Scarlett but I obviously don?t want to put her in a position of social or professional disadvantage by choosing the wrong name. Or give her a name she grows to hate.

I know Scarlett is very popular at the moment but is it going to become the new Jade or Danielle of the 80?s or 90?s? If you are Jade or Danielle do you hate your name? I think it has been around too long to fall completely out of favour I?ve always liked it as it?s a little bit hippy-ish to me .

My OH seems completely unworried and wants to stick with it. Jokingly says where we live could do with a few chavs.

I think of it as quite a boho name - similar to India, Sienna, Summer etc - rather than a "chav" name.

In any case I agree with your OH. If you like it, use it.

I've never thought of Scarlett as 'chavvy' at all, I happen to think it's a lovely name As for the popularity factor, well, I've yet to meet anyone named Scarlett!

I love the name Scarlett :) The only thing that puts me off using it is that it doesn't have much nn potential (Scar?)

Not chavvy at all. Go for it! But just one gentle reminder......DO NOT TELL ANYONE THE NAME YOU HAVE CHOSEN BEFORE THE BABY IS BORN! Everyone has an opinion.

Once the baby is born the name becomes a fact rather than an idea and people will have to get on with it!

I have a Scarlett - and a few negative comments before I had her (the only name we could agree on too - LOL)

BUT a lot of positive ones too; never heard of it being referred to as 'chavvy' and I have a teenage expert on chavviness at home...she agrees it's not chavvy.

Nicknaming to Lettie or Scarley (although more often Scarlett Monkey or Red Monkey or just Red)

My daughter is called Scarlett and we are definately not chavs! We thought we may call her Letty, but we don't actually shorten it/use a nickname at all. I did get upset about the 'Scar' thing at one point as she had heart surgery at 6 months and obviously has a scar - kids can be so cruel and I thought she may be picked on about it - but as it turns out they went in the side rather than the front and she won't have to show it to anyone unless she wants to, so am no longer worried! She has reddish hair too! I knew there was a chance (I am chestnutty), but my hubby is very dark so I assumed his genes would rule! It really suits her. I think it's a beautiful name!

Hmmm...I think it has quickly, within a few years gone from being a middle class/boho name to being used by those with less class. A bit like Jade, yes.

I know one Scarlett with middle class parents and one scarlet who's mum is very working class.

I think it's definitely a Danielle/Jade kind of name but don't think that's a bad thing.

I like the name, but it does have associations (as above) and in my case I know a very (posh) Scarlett of my age and she is so utterly barking mad, you-only-have-to-mention-her-name-before-doing-an-involuntary-shudder that I could never consider it.

I think its nice, I've seen it used with a mix of people from the more 'posh' to the more 'chav' so I wouldn't presume it meant someone was one or the other, I think its quite popular all round.

I'm a danielle - I am in my mid 40s and so a bit at its later popularity. I've never much liked it, my parents thought that they were terribly sophisticated. I am sure that people are a bit surprised when I turn out to be a 40 something lesbian academic, but hey, it's my name - what can I do?

Seriously considering it as a middle name with Lucy. DH loves it - and Ruby too. My mum isn't so keen I don't think. Not sure why. I think it's v pretty.

I love Scarlett. If DS had been a girl his middle name would have been Scarlett. O'Hara springs to my mind.

I think it's a really clunky, ugly name but you would probably hate the pretty names I gave my girls so it doesn't really matter what I think!

Do you know i only ever hear it referred to as chavvy on this Forum... I only know 1 and she is 5 and from an upper working class family...

I don't think Scarlett is chavvy. I don't know anyone called Scarlett. I think it is a great name. Always reminds me of Scarlett O'Hara.
Someone will ALWAYS say something negative about a potential name. My sil put me off the name Gemma as it was her neighbours dog.

i like it, makes me think of adventurous heroines, flame haired vixens and generally get up and go women.

don't know anyone in RL with it.

don't think its chavvy. use it if you love it, and if it suits babba when she arrives. don't tell folk beforehand unless you want the negativity.
