Scarlett - Receiving Lots of Negative Comments

katfai · 29/07/2011 15:27

Only name me and my other half have managed to agree on for our DD is Scarlett however receiving lots of negative comments which frankly seem a bit snobby to me ? that the name is common or even worse ?chavvy? . Is this true?

I don?t move in ?chav? circles I?m a 37 year old, professional who works in London and lives in a very affluent part of Hampshire. So have no idea about ?chav? names. I can?t imagine our daughter will be socially disadvantaged by calling her Scarlett but I obviously don?t want to put her in a position of social or professional disadvantage by choosing the wrong name. Or give her a name she grows to hate.

I know Scarlett is very popular at the moment but is it going to become the new Jade or Danielle of the 80?s or 90?s? If you are Jade or Danielle do you hate your name? I think it has been around too long to fall completely out of favour I?ve always liked it as it?s a little bit hippy-ish to me .

My OH seems completely unworried and wants to stick with it. Jokingly says where we live could do with a few chavs.

I don't have any class association for the name, but don't think it's very nice as a name, just seems a bit ugly to me somehow. Charlotte is much nicer IMO and a similar sound.

I can't imagine it would disadvantage her in any way though, so if you and DH like it, don't let that put you off.

MarathonMillie · 04/08/2011 14:27

My 1 year old DD is Scarlett and DH and I love the name. It really suits DD and her personality. MIL doesn't like the name Scarlett and often refers to her as "baby" but that is her problem!

diddl · 04/08/2011 18:05

I really like it.

Names aren´t "chavvy"-people are.

Greenwing · 04/08/2011 21:11

Scarlett seems to divide opinion completely - a marmite name?!
DH's friend called his daughter this - we were really shocked as it seemed a very 'downmarket' choice which will date and is likely to get looked down on by some of the snobbish people in their circle.
It is also ugly and begins with Scar.
Makes me think of Scarlet fever (my sister had that) and scarlatina (is that a different disease?).
Sorry, thumbs down all the way from here - but other people love marmite!
Do let us know if you decide to use it.

CollieandPup · 06/08/2011 15:48

I think Scarlett is lovely! Never thought of it as chavy.

first1 · 06/08/2011 16:03

People will inevitably shorten it to "Scar" which is just plain horrible for anyone, let alone a little girl. I too am from a "rather affluent" area and I see it as pretentious. Sorry. Charlotte is much prettier.

diddl · 06/08/2011 16:11

"People will inevitably shorten it to "Scar" "

Really, why will they?

It never occurs to me to shorten a name.

And Scarlett is only 2 syllables-hardly a trial to say!

first1 · 06/08/2011 16:59

Diddl - you'll see I was merely reiterating what many other people on here have said about a nickname of Scar.

diddl · 06/08/2011 17:15

I´ve seen people say that they don´t like that it has "scar" in it, but not that that will obviously be the nn.

Bandwithering · 06/08/2011 18:48

It's still IN the name though, and the first syllable at that. And 50#% of the name is still Scar. Odd choice imo!

poppydaisy · 06/08/2011 19:17

And the emphasis is on the first syllable, Scar. Now I can't think of anything else when I hear Scarlett, actually.

cantsleepwontsleepever · 07/08/2011 00:42

The 4 little Scarletts I now are from rather posh backgrounds. None are NNed Scar. Oscar has scar in its name too and I've not heard anyone to find this a problem.

tammytoby · 07/08/2011 10:34

But with Oscar the emphasis is on the first syllable, Oz. In Scarlett the emphasis is on the first, Scar.

The OP asked for honest opinions, this is what we're giving.

Tillyscoutsmum · 07/08/2011 10:48

DSD is Scarlett. She is very middle class. DD nicknamed her Scarley which she didn't like initially but has now got used to (and likes).

She is almost 8 though and was born before Scarlett Johanssen became very famous. I have noticed it has become more popular and possibly used in ....errrmmm... more chavvy (for want of a better word !) circles in the last few years.

Bandwithering · 07/08/2011 11:13

yEAH i hear Oscar like OSSkurr

didn't even hear/see that 'scar' was in it til pointed out. hits me betweem the two eyes with scarlett though

Scarlettymum · 07/08/2011 11:21

Name change here as totally outing myself.

I have a Scarlett aged 12 and an Oscar of 9. I genuinely didn't realise about the double Scar sound until a couple of years later and it doesn't bother me although I was a little Hmm at myself when I realised.

Dd's name is rarely shortened although DS sometimes calls her Scart. DS is usually Oscy.

12 years ago, Scarlett was quite out there in terms of name choices. We chose it because it was a strong name (I'm not a fan of overly girly flowery
names. Charlotte was on our shortlist but it just didn't seem as energetic as a name). And I felt there was a touch of glamour about Scarlett too.

We had lots if raised eyebrows/objection from family, especially from my parents on the Scarlet Woman aspect. I once had a middle aged lady physically recoil in a cafe when she asked me what my baby's name was.

I think Scarlett Johansen was probably one of the reasons for the popularisation of Scarlett. To be very candid, I probably wouldn't choose it now as I think it is too ubiquitous.

MrsRhettButler · 08/08/2011 00:57

Well I like it........

TillyIpswitch · 08/08/2011 01:58

Grin MrsB...

CLS101 · 08/08/2011 15:44

No not chavvy at all.

bigbluebump · 08/08/2011 17:33

Whilst I don't really get all this 'labelling' of names according to chav/poshness, perhaps there are varying degrees of chavness, CLS101, with some areas more 'chav' than others Grin.

(being non-British, I honestly find this whole topic quite funny, actually)

MrsRhettButler · 08/08/2011 17:51

Agree with diddle totally. (just thought I'd put that in there...)

graciousenid · 08/08/2011 17:52

the Scarlett I know is nicknamed Tarly, she's never been called Scar afaik.

BulletWithAName · 08/08/2011 18:00

I really don't get the obsession with nicknames on here. Both of my DC are called by their full names, one of them is a Scarlett. IMO, Scarlett is a name that can't be shortened, which I'm pleased about!

stigofthelump · 08/08/2011 18:15

I really like the name but wouldn't use it as I know lots around here. Some lovely school age girls but rather a lot of preschool age girls from families on the chav side. sorry

nykxx · 08/08/2011 18:58

scarlett i know is shortened to red!!! i always thought i was quite a posh name actually
