Does anyone know any nice but unshortenable names? People shortening lovely names bugs the crap out of me so I need something that it can't happen to!! We love Freya but no doubt it will be shortened to 'Frey' and she will be far from an old piece of material!!

I sometimes shorten my own name to J, just to prove that everything can be shortened.

Freya is lovely btw.

TBH even if you think you have cracked it people, often school friends, will find a way to alter their names if they can or come up with entirly different nn altogether.

I thought no one would shorten DD's name - Mollie. But they do! And they lenthen it too.

My name is Claire and tbh noone ever shortened it, but they did lengthen it.

I would just use the name you like and not worry about the possibility it will be shortened in future!

Ds is Harry and I likes the fact it couldn't be shortened. Then I discovered that locally "h" is a nickname for Harry. So far I have put my foot down and inisited it's harry but know I will have less an less control over that as he gets older

I'm and Alice and get Allie

Short names get lengthened- I know an Adam who is Addy, Rex who is Reggie etc.

And nicknames can come from all sorts of roots other than first names - I have very curly blonde hair, and was Popcorn, Hairbear and Fuzzy at school. DH's longstanding nn is based on his surname.

... and a Niamh who is Niamhy (does that spelling work?), prounounced Neevey anyway.

I had friends at school/uni with many of the names mentioned and we still managed to shorten them:

Amy - Aims
Sarah - Sar (pn 'Sare')
Laura - La
Hazel - Zel
Meredith - Merry
Alice - Al

I don't know why we seem to have an instinctive need to do this to names really. Long versions are nearly always nicer imo yet I still shorten them!

It is absolutely impossible to keep control of a name-the only person to do it is the DC-so there is no point in worrying.
