Does anyone know any nice but unshortenable names? People shortening lovely names bugs the crap out of me so I need something that it can't happen to!! We love Freya but no doubt it will be shortened to 'Frey' and she will be far from an old piece of material!!

My father worked with someone who said his mother had chosen his name because it wouldn't get shortened .......... Godfrey.

smokinaces · 05/07/2011 19:41

Yup, both my boys have names that cant be shortened (both me and my ex had longer names that always had a shortened nickname and we both wanted short names)

and they both now have ie on the end of their name lengthening it instead!!!

Taffeta · 05/07/2011 19:42

Totally agree with feckwit - short names get lengthened - my mother Ann's name was often lengthened to Annie, AnnPan etc etc

BellaBearisWideAwake · 05/07/2011 19:43

Seth. Quite hard to lengthen as well, although DH manages.

Funtimewincies · 05/07/2011 19:47

Bandwithering - I have one of those names and it still gets shortened Confused.

A one syllable name is pretty foolproof I would imagine.

ShirlOckholmes · 05/07/2011 20:02

Choose a name that you like both the long and the short versions :
Gabrielle/Gabby
Susannah/Susie
Catherine/Katy
Florence/Flo

Meditrina do you think 'Godfreya' could catch on for girls. Blush maybe not!

wigglesrock · 05/07/2011 20:40

On a different note, both my husband and dad have names that are frequently shortened but theirs never are!! Both my granny and mil would have slapped the arse of anyone who shortened them Grin Husband is almost 40 and I've been with him for 20 years and have never heard anyone, friends, colleagues etc shorten his name.

Yep, one syllable names definately get lengthened! Speaking from experience as wife to Johnny (John) and mummy to Judo (Jude)!

ThisIsJustASagaNow · 05/07/2011 21:41

Oh yes re short names being lengthenedHmm.

My 3 each have names you'd be hard pushed to mess about with and were carefully chosen because of it. And yet what some of their friends call them! Gawd help us I give upConfused

LtEveDallas · 05/07/2011 21:47

I know a Freya that gets called FayFay !

Umm, Leigh?

spiderlight · 05/07/2011 21:52

I hated having an unshortenable name as a child because all my friends had shortened nicknames and I couldn't.

Rhubarbgarden · 05/07/2011 22:01

Marie
Hazel

PipFEH · 05/07/2011 22:15

Oh, and a nickname could quite easily be picked out of the air too - my daughter's name is Scarlett, but she is often called Dotty...........

telsa · 06/07/2011 17:48

Farne is one I heard today - hard to shorten! Well, Fa, I suppose.

mollymole · 06/07/2011 18:41

sian for a girl
sean for a boy

MrsRupertBear · 06/07/2011 20:01

Kate
Grace
Rose
Pearl

I have a short name and it never gets lengthened. However, my DH has one too and his always gets an 'O' on the end of it.

lovesicecream · 09/07/2011 11:07

I have a Cory kids call him corz

exoticfruits · 09/07/2011 11:25

It isn't possible! We tried it and he is known by friends by his surname (one that people use as a first name and he likes it)
I know an Ian known as E (not something his parents wanted!)
They will also lengthen names or do a play on a name.

lovesicecream · 09/07/2011 11:30

Yeah Cory has also been called ree and curry ( which he hates!)

nicolamumof3 · 10/07/2011 21:46

We are probably going for Isla, i love that it can't be shortened. Its the reason we probably won't go for our second choice of Constance as think its a beautiful name and wouldn't want it permanently shortened to Connie.

PrincessScrumpy · 10/07/2011 21:59

I'm afraid it's unavoidable - my cousin is James but he's known as Pie to his friends (an abbreviation of his surname!) It's particularly the case with boys.

I've never heard of a Freya called Frey.

nicolamumof3 · 10/07/2011 22:01

James is very shortenable tho!! My brother is James, been Jamie, J, Jimbob, Jimmy and Jim!
