When did you decide on your children's names?

Was it way, way back before you even met your OH? Sometime before you got pregnant? During the pregnancy, or after the birth?

Has it been different for different children?

Me and DH had decided both of ours after the 20-week scan when we found out the sex of them. I am a little bit 'anal' about having everything organised which is why I wanted to find out the sex, have the name planned etc Blush Once we decided, we didn't change our minds once....in fact DS2 was known as 'baby *' by everyone we knew, including DS1 from me being 20 weeks pregnant!

tammy234 · 23/05/2011 14:09

Just after our 20 week scan after we found out what we were having.

nickelbabe · 23/05/2011 14:11

way way before - we confirmed our decisions (for the first 3 boys and the first 3 girls, in the correct order) when we first started TTC, but I had ideas of some names years ago.
(ie the 2st boy and girl have always had names!)

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 23/05/2011 14:13

DD1, first name was chosen before conception - we ran through a bunch more after conception but stuck with the clear frontrunner. Second name we chose early in the pregnancy, there were only two options so it was easy.

DC2, if it's a boy he'll have the boys name we chose for DC1. If a girl, I think I'm about 95% there with a decision at 14 weeks.

Pasiphae · 23/05/2011 14:13

Around the 20 week scan for us too.

tabulahrasa · 23/05/2011 14:15

DS, we toyed around with lots of names for ages and had one we'd sort of picked, but weren't definite about it - he was born, we said, are we calling him that then? and we did

DD, I was more organized, made little lists and all sorts, had a boy and girl's name picked out, then I met loads and loads of baby girls called that name (Chloe) so I went off it, I thought she was going to be a boy anyway, no reason at all like, lol, so she was called baby for 10 days, rofl

piprabbit · 23/05/2011 14:16

I decided DD's name when I was about 17/18 years old.
I didn't actually have DD until I was 33.

DSs name was decided when DH pointed out we should have a boy's name ready just in case. DD arrived, so we used the name 5 years later when DS finally arrived.

IWantToBeAFairyWhenIGrowUp · 23/05/2011 14:17

We had chosen our boys name (convinced we were having a boy), however we had a girl and although we hadn't fully decided what to call her - the midwife asked if we had a name and we both said the same thing. So afterwards.

iskra · 23/05/2011 14:19

With DD, we picked out a girl's name at some point during the pregnancy - I think around 20 something weeks - but we never managed to pick out a boy's name - luckily she was a girl! I actually think we picked her name just so that we could stop thinking about it, we were so not enjoying hte babyname choosing.

At the moment I'm 24 weeks, & we know it's another little girl, but we have got pretty much nowhere...

RamblingRosa · 23/05/2011 14:20

Compiled a short-list for both boys and girls names during pregnancy. More or less decided on 1st choice names during pregnancy. Agreed on it the second we clapped eyes on lovely DD. Couldn't agree on middle name until we were in the car en route to the town hall to register the birth though. And it was on the final day that we were allowed to register.

TobyLerone · 23/05/2011 14:21

With my son, it was 3 days after he was born.

With my daughter, it was the day she was born, and partly because of the day she was born.

Jas · 23/05/2011 14:25

dd1 weeks before she was born. (but didn't find out her sex before she was born, and never had a boys name)
DD2 was 4 weeks old, ds was 6 weeks old.

BatFlattery · 23/05/2011 14:31

We didn't find out the sex, but had a shortlist of names for both, and had agreed on our favourites from the list.

When DS was born though, he just didn't look like the name we'd chosen (and I was never 100% sure of it anyway), so we chose another on the spot. It fits him perfectly.

ds - The day he was born
DC - the day she was 3 months old Blush

Concordia · 23/05/2011 14:33

DD not DC

TobyLerone · 23/05/2011 14:35

Luckily for you, Meant, no, she isn't called Tuesday.

Melly19MummyToBe · 23/05/2011 14:35

Think I was around 25 weeks when the name just came to me when I was watching tv and I said "Oh that's her name!" (Poppy), I read through the entire names book (even the boys names) and nothing else was right. Dp didn't like it, and he told his mum that I liked that name, she agreed with me that it was a nice name, all of a sudden DP loves it Hmm but said he reckoned it should be double-barralled, and the only name he liked was Louise, he refused to read the book because he couldn't pronounce half the names in there and it confused him. So Poppy-Louise she is! Think it was finally decided about 30 weeks.

Melly19MummyToBe · 23/05/2011 14:37

3 months? Really?? I thought you're only supposed to have 6 weeks to register the birth!?!

BikeRunSki · 23/05/2011 14:43

I knew first name about 20 years before I had any DC! Decided on full name at about 9 weeks pg then told DH that that was the name we'd be using after 20 wk scan.

20 wk scan for DC2 two weeks today. I have a b name and a g name lined up to "tell" DH.

DD's name was decided when I was about 11. This time we're struggling. We had a shortlist of 3 of each for DD although they were never really up for consideration. However, that was 3 years ago and now, although I still like them, they bore me rigid now.
