Beryl

Can I use Beryl if I already have a Pearl?
Dh and I agree on 4 girls names. I also have two more that I am trying to get him to agree to.
Beryl is my favourite from the 4 we agree on, but we have a dd Pearl already.

She is nearly 6, so at school. Baby and dd will not be at toddler group together or anything like that.

What do you think?

Sorry to say, but you have TERRIBLE taste in names.

allbie · 21/05/2011 20:48

Normally I tend to say that you should go ahead and name them whatever you want but really....Beryl?

Ariesgirl · 21/05/2011 20:51

Please don't use Beryl, I beg you Beryl is like Edna and Doris.

FriedSpamButty · 21/05/2011 20:53

I'm with Shiney. Sorry, I hate every one of your choices but Beryl is particularly hideous for anyone aged under 60.

Ariesgirl · 21/05/2011 20:54

Oh God, I have just read the rest. Surely you are winding us up? Mildred? It reminds me of Mildew.

Fopdoodle · 21/05/2011 20:54

Please,I beg you, don't inflict Beryl on your dd.It is my MIL's name, and it brings me out in hives when I hear it,see it or even think about it :D

AvonCallingBarksdale · 21/05/2011 20:54

Oooh, nooooo, not Beryl. It's really not nice, not at all. Sorry. Pearl is beautiful ( I am biased), but not Beryl. Bez, Bezza, Ryl?

hormonesnomore · 21/05/2011 21:03

As Pedigreechump has pointed out, Beryl & Pearl sound the same, just a change of letter at the beginning.

Sorry, but the two names together sound silly - and Beryl is awful.

You mentioned Isabel - now that's a beautiful name.

scottishmummy · 21/05/2011 21:09

beryl and pearl?sounds too ole lush
no

TidyDancer · 21/05/2011 21:10

Sorry to say it, but all your choices are terrible. Really really hideous.

If I absolutely had to choose one, I suppose it would be Susan, but even that's not nice.

I'm also usually an each to their own, even with the horrid trendy names, but Beryl?! No bloody way. Please don't do that to your offspring. It really is a very ugly name.

sonniebonnie · 21/05/2011 21:12

Perhaps because I don't know any 'old' Beryls and therefore don't have any 'granny' associations, I really like the name. I think Beryl sounds feminine, elegant and refreshing (as in not already used by thousands of others). What is there not to like? And Berry is a really cute nickname! I also think that Pearl and Beryl go very well together.

Imagine if all mumsnetters loved the name, it would end up the next Ella, Grace or Evie (yawn...).

Tigerbomb · 21/05/2011 21:24

Beryl is too much like burial.

Hideous name

MmeBucket · 21/05/2011 21:28

My grannie was named Beryl. Even people her age would question her on her name and would often make a face when they had to read it or heard it. It truly is a terrible name.

exoticfruits · 21/05/2011 22:40

I wonder why people don't ask the old ladies what they think of their names, the only Beryl that I know (in her 80s) hates it.

deste · 21/05/2011 23:50

This has got to be a windup. There are so many lovely names why would you saddle your child with a name like that. I bet if you asked anyone who was called Beryl if they liked their name they would say no.

amberleaf · 22/05/2011 00:10

This has to be a windup?

I am picturing the OP wetting her/himself with laughter that so many posters are agreeing that such a hideous name is acceptable.

scottishmummy · 22/05/2011 00:22

yes beryl is evocative of incontinence

Scarletbanner · 22/05/2011 00:23

Beryl is just horrible - it sounds ugly, and has no redeeming features. And I agree it's very similar to Pearl.

Ursula and Jane are the best of your other choices. And Thisbe may not be as unusual as you think - I have heard it being yelled at children twice recently (S Wales).

mathanxiety · 22/05/2011 00:25

Would you consider Garnet or Agatha (agate)?

Or Emerald/Esmerelda? Emerald is green beryl; it gets its colour from chromium and maybe vanadium iirc.

I didn't even know Beryl was a gemstone so I wouldn't see a problem using it with Pearl. The only problem I'd see is that Beryl is not a nice name IMO. Ditto Mildred.

However, as other people's opinions on the actual name Beryl aren't what you want - just guidance on whether it sounds odd with Pearl then, no, it doesn't sound any odder with Pearl than it would with another name Smile.

emmanumber3 · 22/05/2011 01:04

Out of interest, I'd love to hear which names DH vetoed - considering Mildred & Beryl were approved Grin. Unless of course it was your Isabella/Ella/Bellas for being overly popular.

amberleaf · 22/05/2011 01:13

I think you should call her....... Gertrude

excellentadventure · 22/05/2011 01:42

Why is Beryl so much worse than Meryl, Sheryl or Cheryl? Just askin'.

mathanxiety · 22/05/2011 02:14

I think it's far nicer than any of those three.
