Boys name - Finn or Ned???

Hi Ladies
No 3 is due in 6 weeks. We already have an Archie William (5) and a Thomas George (3) who is called Tom.

Have wanted Ned (Edward) forever, but a friend has just used this, and another friend has also had an Edward so am looking at alternatives...

What do you think of Finn? Possibly Finley James but prefer just Finn myself.

So Finn or Ned... ? Surname is 2 syllables and begins with P

How about Edwin or Edmund - just to be different? Could still be called Ned.

Ooh Ned is lovely, Finn is just too trendy and will date badly.

I LOVE Ned, but everyone north of the border will say NO. It's a derogatory (sp?) term in Scotland.
I also love Finn, but it's become so overused where I live.

No please not ned. Well I suppose if you don't plan on many visits to scotland it'll be ok, but where my family live calling your child ned would be the same as calling your child 'lout'. Finn is much nicer even if that was based on sound alone. Ned makes me think first of thugs (Scottish) and second of farm horses.

Please not Finn - there are more than enough little Fins/Finns out there and I agree it will date badly as it has become so trendy in a short space of time.

Edward is nice, although Ned isn't the nicest nickname imo.

Actually I agree with Rachel - Edward is really nice and has some good nicknames (ed or eddie) without having to bring ned into the equation.

Neither - Finn is indeed way overused and Ned is a very derogatory term in Scotland. Edward is lovely though and you could shorten to Ed.

Ooh also I absolutely love the name Finbar. A bit more unusual than finlay. But I think it might be a bit of an acquired taste.

Ned way better than Fin.

Finn is great. Less keen on Ned (though I quite like Edward)

Ned is a name fit for a numpty. It's a wally's name.

Finn is strong and handsome.

I have always loved Finn. Hubby ruined it for me for saying that our son might turn out to be fat, and fat Finn was not a good combo.

However, deep down I still LOVE Finn.

Finbar is just fantastic. Not biased in anyway,ahem. Ned is ok though, at a push!

Love both, wanted one and got the other. Finbar is a nice alternative. How old are all these Finn/Finlay's there's only one around here that I know of.

Honestly, calling your child Ned is the equivalent of calling him Chav. He could never study or live in Scotland as he would be teased mercilessly, don't do it!

Edward nn Ned is great in my opinion and goes really really well with your DS's names. He could also decide to use other "cooler" nicknames like Teddy / Eddie / Ed if he wanted to later.

Not keen on Finn / Finley / Finbar / Finlay at all, it's just too "trendy" so I think it will become dated. Also I think Ned goes much better with Archie and Tom.

Would you consider Thaddeus (Thad)?

Unless OP lives in Scotland (or Ireland), does it matter? The Irish name Seamus sounds very similar to the Italian word for idiot but I'm not sure that would be a valid reason for someone (who didn't live in Italy) not to choose it. Who's to say that that the slang word Ned won't be superceded by another in time anyway?

On a separate issue, I think that children should be given the "real" name even if it never used so I would call him Edward and then shorten. I do love the name Ned .
