What do *you* consider to be "horrible" names?

I was reading another thread here, where many people referred to a particular name as being "horrible". So it got me to thinking... What constitutes a "horrible" name, and how does that perception change from region to region?

Please... This is NOT to offend ANYONE... I just truly want to get a feel for what you think are truly awful names. Opinions vary greatly across the globe, and I would love to be able to compare them.

Here's the deal... I would be very grateful if each poster would post (as nicely as possible) the names they dislike the very most, and why, without taking merciless jabs. Also, if you are comfortable with it, would you please list the continent or country you are from as well. I am hoping this will be fun and informative!

Here goes... My uncontested, most disliked name of all time is "Nevaeh". Why? Because I think it is beyond senseless to reverse the spelling of a common word and call it a name. (North America)

I do not like made up names (Braylee, Kylinn) or boys names ending in -den/don/din/dan. Except for Aidan, which is a Proper Name. :)

My DS is Sam and his is the only boys' name in Parent Circle which does not end in those Godforsaken letters. There is a Zayden, a Brayden, a Jaiden, a Carson (a bit different but still ), Caydon, Kaidin and Peyton (again a bit different.)

I hate the name Olivia. It makes me heave. I know it is my issue, it's obviously a perfectly nice name and lots of people use it.

I also can't bear anything that ends in -Mae.

Millicent, heave-worthy also!
Stacey, Kayleigh, ashley, dawn..misspelt or made up names generally

kimberly no real reason other than it hurts my ears,also not a lover of Olivia

Melanie - too close to melanoma, or melancholy. I'm in the UK.

Stanley and Matilda.

And Jordan Jayden Emmaleigh Demi-mai type names.

Tracey, Kylie, Donna, Sharon
Helga, Gertrude and Beatrice
Jayden etc.

Peregrine - I just think why woul you name your son after a uglybird

Torquil - just WTF???

Kayeigh,Chardonnay (or any name after a wine) Mercedes - just screams chav

Mary,Claire,Julie - just drab

Gurtrude,Ermintrude,Malcolm, Fatima - conjures up images of ugly people (Shallow emotion)

Rainbow, Star, Twinkle etc - desperate, just screams I am trying too hard to come up with an original name for dc.

Daniel - no idea why its a completely normal average name but one I have never ever liked and for no good reason really. Sorry!!

Emma, Louise, Rebecca, Victoria, Emily, Claire, Adam, Peter, Matthew, Mark- all names i think are too outdated now, very 70's and 80's and bloody boring and character-less. I could come up with more .....

Brenda, Shirley, Carole. Kevin, Nigel, Roger. All similar names of the same era which are not yet ready for revival

Sidney as boys name and Elsie as girls name

Emily - I have never met a nice grown up one. Met plenty of baby/toddler Emilys who seem nice on the surface but there's still time for them to turn evil...

Anything hyphenated, especially with May/Mai/Mae and especially when the first name is a twee little girly name, eg Tilly-Mae, Lily-May etc

Old lady/man names that are a bit too try-hard. Eg, Archie, Arthur, Ruby are ok in my book, but recently I've met babies called Stanley, Sidney, Dorothy, Dora ... it's like people want to follow the trend but also be different so just choose something that's old-fashioned but really horrible.

These are all my own very biased opinions though, and who am I to talk, plenty of people pulled faces at DD2's name and everyone gets DD1's name wrong!

I hate (imho) drippy/wet names like: Malcom, raymond, eleanor, gordon, julian...

"trendy" or made up names like:jayden, braeden, kayden, nevaeh,

try hard to be posh names: Quentin,peresphone, Hermione, octavia, millicent, percy, etc

Gosh I'm hard to please aren't I!

Brian, Nigel and Roger for being just awful. Not keen on Trevor Richard or Robert either.
For girls, Jessica, Francesca and Maria, Gemma, Lauren and Katrina.
I know that my dislike is irrational, but who is totally rational. I haven't come across any of the names listed by cheerful but I live in Belgium.
I also dislike surname names - Taylor, Morgan etc and names that are jobs -
Tyler for example and colours - Scarlett, Blue. Finally, place name names - Inida, Chelsea and Brooklyn are good examples.

I can't stand Ethan. Not sure why, it just sounds ugly to me. There's plenty around though, so clearly I'm in a minority [cgrin]

Louis, pronounced Lou-ey, just sounds so poncey.

Most modern names beginning with K, you know the ones I mean.

OMG... Hermione... I hate that name. It's so try hard. "Oh, we're sooooo middle-class". Erm, no you're not actually.

oh my sons name mentioned now I've nearly got the full house

Braeden. Whenever I hear that name (which is regularly as I spend a lot of time in the US), I can see a horse going "nneeaaahhh". A bit like the bit hog in Reggie Perrin whenever he thought about his MIL.

I hate Ethan, Liam, Miles - can't really explain why.

Girls names that are poncily made up or deliberately spelt wrong eg: Chelsea, Chardonnay, Sundae-Rose etc,

Also 'hippy' names - Willow, Spruce, Merlin .....

I like traditional, old fashioned, simple names .

Are there any mumsnetters with really unusual 'made-up' names - if so, how do you feel about your name?

For me, it is anything where the child could be teased. That would include 'old gran' names such as Ethel, Vera etc. and names from other generations or too 'out there'. Also names with a hyphen which sound chavvy.
