What do *you* consider to be "horrible" names?

I was reading another thread here, where many people referred to a particular name as being "horrible". So it got me to thinking... What constitutes a "horrible" name, and how does that perception change from region to region?

Please... This is NOT to offend ANYONE... I just truly want to get a feel for what you think are truly awful names. Opinions vary greatly across the globe, and I would love to be able to compare them.

Here's the deal... I would be very grateful if each poster would post (as nicely as possible) the names they dislike the very most, and why, without taking merciless jabs. Also, if you are comfortable with it, would you please list the continent or country you are from as well. I am hoping this will be fun and informative!

Here goes... My uncontested, most disliked name of all time is "Nevaeh". Why? Because I think it is beyond senseless to reverse the spelling of a common word and call it a name. (North America)

Phillipa, Harriet - stuffy, jolly hockey sticks kind of names

Emma, Olivia, Sophie - boring and unimaginative

Milly, Molly, Lucy, Poppy, Posy, Primrose - weak, twee, wet, meek.

Sometimes it can depend on who's got the name. I know quite a few Lily's.
I love it on some but detest it on others.

Lewis. Its the spelling rather than the sound I hate the "ew" part.

I know its very popular and im very much it the minority but.
The worse girls name ever in my opinion....Ella. I just don't understand the hype.

I don't like Lilith, it sounds rather New Agey to me.

Maeve is all right if you are Irish.

Ella is fine for jazz fans.

Oh, Ella is another pet hate of mine! Such a nothing of a name.

I hate (imho) drippy/wet names like: Malcom, raymond, eleanor, gordon, julian...

"trendy" or made up names like:jayden, braeden, kayden, nevaeh,

try hard to be posh names: Quentin,peresphone, Hermione, octavia, millicent, percy, etc

Gosh I'm hard to please aren't I!

Oh, I've thought of another - Elspeth. It's the "peth" sound which makes me think of spit.

I really dislike.....

Ena, Ida, Freda, Brenda, Breda and other names of that ilk
Sonny, I can imagine him being patronised by others saying "alright Son?" to him.
Old man names Ray, Stan, Bernard, Roger

In general I don't like the sound of names with two syllables when the first one is stressed and long - for example: Maureen, Doreen, Eileen, Audrey, Eunice, Julie, Diane and Irene.

Sarah fits that pattern, but I love it. I also love Julia, Diana and Irene with three syllables.

Archibald/Archie

Cutesy names that only work on a small child or sound more appropriate for a pet: Bonnie, Elsie, Millie, Nellie, Tilly, etc are all becoming popular and I don’t see the appeal AT ALL

I don’t hate many names - but the ones I do hate are all the names of kids who bullied me at school, so it’s the negative connotations of the name rather than the name itself.

And the worst one of all...
Nell / Nelly / Nellie.

God, I completely agree. I had an elderly great auntie Nellie, so I associate it with a very much older generation (born in the 1910s/1920s). But it's the fact it rhymes with 'smelly' and 'belly' that just puts me off. I can't get past the rhyme in my mind at all, ever.

Actually, thinking about it, "Kelly" might be my absolute number one hated name ever. Sorry to any Kellys - it's not personal - but the sound of it just makes me cringe.

My DD's nursery had a picture book called "Kelly's Smelly Wellies" and every time I caught sight of it my insides just did a little flop and die right there and then.

Boys names given to girls are horrible, sexist abominations.

I think boy’s names ending in ‘y’ are always a bit wet. Timothy, Jeremy, Anthony, (Fauntleroy).

Completely agree with @Prunnhilda’s distaste for Helen as Hellinn.

And I just totally hate the name Heather. It’s an ugly plant and an ugly sound. .
