Hello Everyone,

What do you think of these? The baby's surname will be McQuewen. If it is a girl it will have my grandmother's name as a middle name (all the women in my family do) - Alys (A-liss). Boys don't get middle names because DH's family don't have them...although I like Christopher so might argue the point with DH if I can be bothered!

Girls:
Imogen Alys (nn Emmie)
Emmeline Alys (nn Em/Emmie\Emma)
Merryn Alys
Isobelle Alys (nn Izzy)

Boys
Spencer (nn Spence)
Elliott (haven't decided on spelling yet)
Vincent (Vince\Vinnie)
Nathan (nn Nate)

What do you think? Can you think of any horrible teaing things I have missed?

I like Imogen and Vincent best. Not keen on Nathan, I am afraid.

Joannezipan · 21/04/2011 13:00

Alys is a family name and isn't pronounced the same a Alice, plus I really like it and it's my middle name too! :)

puzzled by Isobelle's spelling, I prefer the "standard" spelling (Isabelle/Isabel). Like Imogen. Don't like the others sorry.
I like Elliot and Nathan. Not wild about the others.

I love Elliott as a name. I wanted to call DS2 Elliott, but DH has vetoed it.

Not keen on the weird spellings of your girl names, but I love Isabel/Isabelle. By going with an unusual spelling you're condemning your DD to a lifetime of her name being misspelt by all and sundry - so I'd go with a more conventional spelling if it were me. Ditto Alice, which is also a name I love.

rachel234 · 21/04/2011 13:32

Love Spencer/Spence and Vincent/Vince. Not keen on Elliot due to the nickname Elli Grin. Love Emmeline from your girls list.

mamma2boyz · 21/04/2011 14:51

I think Spencer sounds great with your surname...Spencer McQuewen is brilliant...love Imogen and Emmeline, think Imogen is less of a mouthful with your surname though...

Good luck choosing!

oohlaalaa · 21/04/2011 15:00

In order of preference

  1. Imogen Alys (nn Emmie)
  2. Emmeline Alys (nn Em/Emmie\Emma)
  3. Merryn Alys
  4. Isobelle Alys (nn Izzy)

I live the name Isobel, but not your spelling. I prefer Isabel / Isobel

  1. Nathan (nn Nate)
  2. Elliott (haven't decided on spelling yet)
  3. Vincent (nn Vince)

I prefer Nathaniel to Nathan, although I like Nathan. I like the spelling Elliot. Do not like Spencer, so not included it. I associate it with Frank Spencer, and also consider it a surname. I like Vincent, but not the nn Vinnie.

mathanxiety · 21/04/2011 15:06

Elliott and Emmeline.

argylesocks · 21/04/2011 15:18

I think Merryn is really lovely. The others are a bit popular for me... I think there are enough Isabelles (of whatever spelling) already and Imogen seems to be right up there now too. I also love Alys.

Boys - Nathan or Elliott. Vincent doesnt' seem to go and I don't like Spencer.

CarefulWithThatAxeEugene · 21/04/2011 16:30

Alys is just an old spelling of Alice from the days when few people could write, and those who could wrote down names as they sounded. You'll find it in many old parish registers.

Bucharest · 21/04/2011 17:19

Emmeline for me.

Don't like any of the boys.

pilates · 21/04/2011 17:23

Emmeline Alys and Nathan.

Whatevs · 21/04/2011 17:36

I adore Emmeline and Imogen.
Meryyn is OK.
Isobelle = NO. So over used and has lost all its beauty for me.
Alys is a lovely middle name for all your names.

I don't really like any of your boy's names, although I love the name Nathaniel, rather than Nathan, and the nn Nate is great.

speakercorner · 22/04/2011 22:43

I knew a Merryn. Beautiful name and quite unusual. Love Alys.

thisisyesterday · 22/04/2011 22:46

i like Emmeline and Elliott

rainbowrain · 22/04/2011 22:50

Love Elliot, though with one t! Emmeline is very classic! :)

MelinaM · 22/04/2011 22:55

Imogen Alys and SpencerSmile

Indigodingo · 23/04/2011 15:24

Emmeline was on my list for a girl, but having a boy so that's that! :-) Think it is beautiful, musical and not too common (The "bella/ella" names too overdone for me.)
For boys, I also had Vincent and Spenser on my list - think they have a bit of old school charm but also quite cool. Still haven't decided though, so know your pain! Now I see Elliot, I like that a lot too. Reminds me of Elliot in ET (which is a good thing!) and TS Elliot. How do we ever decide these things????

ColonelBrandonsBiggestGroupie · 23/04/2011 15:34

Love the girls' names over all, though less fond of Merryn than the others. Prefer the Isobel spelling for simplicity but Isobel Alys gets my vote (I have an Isobel and an Alice within my dds' names!). Have never heard Alys pronounced Ay-liss though and thought it was just an archaic spelling.

Vincent is my favourite in the boys' names (but don't like Vince or Vinnie) - don't like Spencer at all and Elliott is a name I'm just not v fond of.

Overall imho your girls' names are way, way better than the boys' ones. The girl names are all v pretty whereas the boy ones are all quite 'hard' sounding.

squeak2392 · 26/04/2011 13:30

Definitely Imogen for a girl.
Can't decide over the boys, but I'd say not Nathan just because it's the most popular.

NadiaWadia · 26/04/2011 13:39

Isobelle and Imogen are both gorgeous.

Emmeline is nice.

Not heard of Merryn but it doesn't really grab me.

darleneconnor · 26/04/2011 16:59

Imogen Alys (nn Emmie) en then en as name endings dont go well
Emmeline Alys (nn Em/Emmie\Emma) Emma goes best with your surname
Merryn Alys this goes ok but i dont like it as a name
Isobelle Alys (nn Izzy) there are loads of variations of isobelle atm, and you cant control what nn she'll get

Boys
Spencer (nn Spence) keep it as spencer
Elliott (haven't decided on spelling yet) great
Vincent (Vince\Vinnie) dont like the nns, too used car salesman
Nathan (nn Nate) doesnt go as well woth surname
