Jonathan nn Jonty/Jonny
Frederick nn Freddie/Fred
Thomas nn Tom/Tommy
Joseph nn Joe

As you can see, we like names that can be shortened in various ways! Am about five days overdue and we just can't decide!

Jonathan nn Jonny is lovely.

It's actually the most unusual these days - the others are much more common.

I don't really like Joseph as a name but love Joe. Strangely, of all the Josephs I know (4) they only get Joseph and never Joe, which I think is a shame.

meditrina · 13/04/2011 14:30

I think they're all lovely names!

I'd choose either Jonathan or Frederick.

MelinaM · 13/04/2011 14:32

Frederick or Jonathan, love Freddie and JontySmile x

dasha · 13/04/2011 14:36

Thanks for commenting!

I think Jonathan is our number 1 choice, but then we keep having second thoughts. I worry that it's boring, but I think ThisFeelsWeird is right that it's probably less common than other names these days.

Our other son is called Theodore (known as Theo) if that influences at all... a name that gets a mixed reception on MN!

Jonty is bloody awful. Jonny is ok on a baby but not on a grown man.
Joe is probably your best bet.

(IMO!!!!Grin )

dasha · 13/04/2011 14:40

Ha! Say what you really think upahill!!
I can see your point, though - and the fact that 'Jonathan' will grow into a man called Jon just seems a bit dull! Oh dear... let's hope we have a girl!

Love Theodore! ..and the potential nn Teddy! x

randomimposter · 13/04/2011 14:47

Joseph is my favourite, but they are all nice.

collision · 13/04/2011 14:50

Theo and Joe rhyme if that makes any difference!

Theo and Tom
Theo and Freddie

Freddie is my fave.

upahill · 13/04/2011 14:50

I know a few Jonathons and they are called by there full name except for one or two 'Jon's'

To me Tommy is like an old scottish long retired docker name who smokes 40 Capstans a day.

However I know when it comes to naming babies you will never keep everyone happy ( especially your mother - in my expierence)

Just take a leap of faith and go for what you really like!

ThisFeelsWeird · 13/04/2011 15:07

People always say on here how Jon/John is a dull name but they're thinking about adults by that name - of whom there are many! When I met a little boy called Johnny recently I couldn't stop thinking how fabulously original - to give your child a normal name in general but one that has become very unusual among his peer group. Johnny will never have to be Johnny A or Johnny B and everyone will remember him.

Theo and Jonny sounds lovely -good luck!

Emelene · 13/04/2011 15:22

Jonathan nn Johnny is my favourite for sure. I think it's a great name. :)

dasha · 13/04/2011 16:23

Looks like there's a favourite showing through..! Thanks for stopping by, it really does help :)

Jonathan nn Jonty/Jonny - Like Jonathan, Jon as nickname is nice. Dislike Jonty, sorry! Jonny is OK.
Frederick nn Freddie/Fred - very nice :)
Thomas nn Tom/Tommy - OK, quite nice
Joseph nn Joe - very nice :)

fallenwoman · 13/04/2011 17:01

Joseph definitely.

mamma2boyz · 13/04/2011 17:02

I think Theo and Jonty are lovely together...and Jonny is cool too... much less common than Freddie and Joseph or Tom....wouldnt do Theo and Tom to have same initials but that is just me, lots of people disagree.
Good luck choosing

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 13/04/2011 17:05

We have a Joseph (known as Joe or Joey) so that's my favourite.

I like Jonny next.

I like all of them actually.

burntsienna · 13/04/2011 17:17

One of my inlaws is Jonathan, but he has always been Joe for short.

fyrtlemertile · 13/04/2011 17:28

Jonty is nice, he can be Jon/John if he wants something very short when he's older too!

eatyourveg · 13/04/2011 17:54

Frederick Thomas definitely - love it. Freddie is great but Tom is too

upahill · 13/04/2011 18:01

The thing is, and I know you like the name and I'm sure you are aware but the word Jonny is slang for condom.

We know a 'Jonny' (an adult) and the amount of ribbing he gets is unbelievable. I've heard mainly male colleagues say things like 'poor buger, doesn't he realise?? (of course he bloody does)

But like I said before you will never please everyone but think about the future. What is cute and original now could be like a millstone round your necke when you are 25.

pilates · 13/04/2011 19:39

All of them are nice names.

Frederick and Thomas are my favourites.

I really like Jonty BTW.

burntsienna · 13/04/2011 20:32

Fnarrr fnarrr :o

NotaMopsa · 13/04/2011 20:34

Johnny rocks so cool now. Lots round here but all posh and handsome boys!
