I've driven past the Lorelei too many times so have only this association: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorelei

mateysmum · 20/03/2011 11:26

Sorry - sounds like chav central to me

rachel234 · 20/03/2011 11:27

Lorelei is a rock, not a name for a girl imo.

PepsiPopcorn · 20/03/2011 11:37

How do you pronounce it?

Georgimama · 20/03/2011 11:38

Wasn't she a nymph who drowned? It isn't chavvy, just doesn't have marvellous connatations.

Invisiblesoul · 20/03/2011 11:45

I love it!

greenzebra · 20/03/2011 13:28

She might get the 'did you mum like Gilmore girls'.

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 20/03/2011 16:18

It's a rock in the middle of a river so not a name to me.

rirismummy · 20/03/2011 16:36

Heard this on the TV the other day and remarked on how awful it was....sorry but I really don't like it.

Alibobster · 20/03/2011 16:41

Sorry but sounds like l'oreal

I worked with a Nicola Rose and her daughter is called Isabella. I also went to school with a Hannah Rose. All nice names. Rose is a very nice surname.

spanky2 · 20/03/2011 18:52

There is an eagle eye cherry song called Lorelei. I have just remembered it is about tricking sailors or something. I've come across boys named Malachai, also the name of a demon! Not that I needed them but my girls names were Bethany and Alyssa. Also Anya May would sound good with your surname. I like Lorelei.

nulgirl · 20/03/2011 18:55

I've got a friend whose dd is called lorelei. She has 3 dd's who all have quite unusual names because she is a lecturer who has taught hundreds of students and didn't want to pick names of former students. I quite like it but think you need the confidence to pull it off iyswim.

twosofar · 20/03/2011 20:08

Makes me think of Lorelei Lee, the Marilyn Monroe character in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Vacuous airhead who lured men with her pretty face (as per the legend above). Not great connotations, plus nobody will be able to spell/pronounce it which will really get on your nerves x

MrsGruffalo · 20/03/2011 20:19

I think it's lovely - it means Enchantress

PepsiPopcorn · 20/03/2011 22:25

Found the answer online! It's pronounced LOR-a-lye (for anyone else who didn't know - or perhaps I'm the only one who didn't!)

I always want to pronounce it like the name of the famous author Laurie Lee.

emeraldislander · 20/03/2011 22:50

I LOVE it! Only ever associated it with the Gilmore Girls.

OrangeBernard · 20/03/2011 22:52

I like it

CristinaTheAstonishing · 20/03/2011 23:00

I like it. The rock is not nearly as impressive as its fame. Have no idea who the Gilmore Girls are.

domesticslattern · 20/03/2011 23:07

I like it, but it always gets a drubbing on MN especially from the Germans interestingly. (as I think it is a German name?).
I always associate it with those sex columnists Em and Lo- you might not have heard of them, but they were in the media a fair bit about three or four years ago (Lo aka Lorelei is lovely in RL so no need to be put off!).

ChishAndFips · 20/03/2011 23:11

I would always think of Gilmore Girls, which IMO is a terrible show with even worse acting.

changelingcourgette · 21/03/2011 02:14

I wouldn't know how to pronounce it Blush

MackerelOfFact · 21/03/2011 10:31

It kind of reminds me of Cilla Black talking about untruths. "A lorra lies!"

It has an irksome quality I just can't place. But that's just me.

carciofi · 21/03/2011 11:43

I think it is really pretty and had it on my list for DD.
