There is a poem by Heinrich Heine about the enchantress who lures sailors to their death:

Loreley (Englisch)

I don't know what it may signify
That I am so sad;
There's a tale from ancient times
That I can't get out of my mind.

The air is cool and the twilight is falling
and the Rhine is flowing quietly by;
the top of the mountain is glittering
in the evening sun.

The loveliest maiden is sitting
Up there, wondrous to tell.
Her golden jewelry sparkles
as she combs her golden hair

She combs it with a golden comb
and sings a song as she does,
A song with a peculiar,
powerful melody.

It seizes upon the boatman in his small boat
With unrestrained woe;
He does not look below to the rocky shoals,
He only looks up at the heights.

If I'm not mistaken, the waters
Finally swallowed up fisher and boat;
And with her singing
The Lorelei did this.

And, if you use it she will never ever be able to go to Germany without being laughed at. It is seriously kitsch in German, no one would use it as a baby name.

Personally I am thinking Deep South Trailer park/country and Western... sorry

Lovely!

emeraldislander · 21/03/2011 13:24

Jokat · 21/03/2011 13:46

I love it, it's on our list as well. And that's despite the fact that I am German :)

It means Gilmore Girls to me, which is fab btw, whoever said the acting was bad - you are wrong.

Maternelle · 21/03/2011 14:01

I love it.

Definately not a name you'd want to be have in Germany - it is such a famous landmark and as Mme Lindt said, very kitshy and uncool.

Just sounds terribly OTT to me. A bit bling, a bit footballers wives.

kristorg · 21/03/2011 21:28

Thank you so much all of you. I guess I need to think again then as even though I really like the name my DW has started to tend towards some of the "dont do it" comments - especially as we are both sailors ! Grin

The name of the (very shallow and dim) Marilyn Monroe character in the film 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes'. Not a recommendation!
