We are discussing names for ds 2. DS1 is Thomas and we tend to go for classic names. We are considering Owen or Max. What do you think?

I think they are both nice names. Owen has the edge IMO

mopsyflopsy · 26/01/2011 11:01

Not keen on either, both are quite popular. But if I had to choose, Maximilian.

max and owen are lovely but that the heck is all the maximiliam/maximus about.. poor childrenare going to be pigeon holed as bit pretentious?????

Not that keen on Owen, but quite like Maximilian, which he could shorten to Max or Maxi.

mandy, because to my ears Maximilian or Maximus are lovely, classic, elegant sounding names, whereas Max is a cute nickname for a little child imo.

'pigeon holed' for having a beautiful, proper, classic name... where do you live Shock?

mandy1978 · 26/01/2011 13:11

sorry i think my fast typing may have made me blunter.. i dont see it as a classic beautiful name, to me it sounds a bit wannabe middle class pretention.

i can just se the poor lad getting teased when he has to introduce himself.. i dont know, i if we were italian perhaps but a lot of people i know would probably say 'lovely name' and thenhave a bit of a snigger...

horses for courses etc though

poppydaisy · 26/01/2011 13:14

Well, I guess we have different tastes and/or live in different environments. Not sure what being Italian has to do with it Hmm.

FranSanDisco · 26/01/2011 14:46

I agree with Mandy1978. I have a 9 yo Max. For fun I introduce him as Maximilian and I get raised brows suggesting 'You are joking, right?'. Max is a good name in its own right for a child or a man imo and not 'a cute nick name' or a 'dog's name' Hmm.

rachel1970 · 26/01/2011 14:49

Personally I love the name Maximilan - perhaps because I know a lovely German one (where I think it's been in the top 10 recently). And I find Max just a little too nicknamey and dog like. But then that's just my opinion.

FranSanDisco · 26/01/2011 17:36

Shame you can't spell it then Rachel1970 Hmm

rachel1970 · 26/01/2011 17:58

Yes, you're rigt, I misspelt it, sorry. Should have been Maximilian - and I still love it Smile.

DS is Maxime (named after his maternal grandfather) and we normally use the diminutive "Max". Seems to suit him very well.

I like Owen too, though. Oddly, though, I have three colleagues who each have a DS called Owen (all five or under), so it seems to be quite popular around here.

rachel1970 · 27/01/2011 12:06

I would assume that Maxime is a girls' name and Maxim is the boys' version.

flower38 · 27/01/2011 14:11

max

nancythenaughtyfairy · 27/01/2011 16:34

a vote for Owen

MyMamaToldMe · 27/01/2011 16:36
