Looking for a girl's name. What do you think of these?
Thanks

I think they are all wonderful!

allnightlong · 01/01/2011 12:01

I know a little girl Artemis EVERYONE who first meets her thinks she's a boy because many see the name as male.

Love Penelope one of my favorite names.

Persephone I like the name but there is a school of thought that if your not frightfully posh it comes across as a bit to try hard.

Mum72 · 01/01/2011 12:04

Persephone - I love

Penelope - Like alot but dont like Penny which it will most probably get shortend to.

Artemis - OK

Aldercharm · 01/01/2011 12:04

We're also considering Artemisia as a possible name. That's unmistakeably feminine?

I love Penelope. I love the nn Penny.

Also love persephone.

In fact I just love all 3.

onimolap · 01/01/2011 12:14

Artemisia would make me think of the plant, not the goddess.

fallingandlaughing · 01/01/2011 12:24

Sorry I think all three are really pretentious. Penelope is passable as it would be abbreviated to Penny.

smilingserenely · 01/01/2011 12:32

love persephone nn percy would have used it for dd4 but it's meaning bringer of death put me off

penelope -is thunderbirds lady penelope for me and really don't like the nn penny or pen

artemis ok but

Lilka · 01/01/2011 12:33

I love Persephone and Artemis but i don't like Penelope.

spidookly · 01/01/2011 12:34

I love Artemis and especially Persephone.

Penelope not so much and Penny is ghastly.

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 01/01/2011 12:44

Artemis and Persephone were on the short list for middle names for DD, and I really like them. Not so keen on Penelope though (I blame Lost)

Artemisia, IDK. I think I like it said with a Greek accent (poor DH is being made to say things on the other sofa) but not sure how it would get pronounced in the UK. (I'm like that with Angela - love it as a Greek name, hate it as an English one)

WhereAmIWhereAreYou · 01/01/2011 12:45

they are all pretentious as hell. Although Penelope least so of the bunch.

purplepidjbauble · 01/01/2011 12:53

Thanks a lot, Spidookly lol

Speaking from experience, I dislike the name Penelope and have never been called anything but Penny. They are all a bit of a mouthful, think of your poor poor daughter trying to learn to recognise/spell them! And all those years of misspelled envelopes... I've been mistaken for many things over the phone, mostly Jenny but also Poppy and Pammy LOL

I love Persephone because a woman with the name helped me immensely when I was struggling and is just wonderful, so it always makes me think of her :)

Penelope I also love. Though I'm not keen on Penny - Nell is much nicer imo but I'm not sure you'd be able to dictate that.

monkeyslut · 01/01/2011 13:07

Artemis is lovely (am Envy as DH vetoed it)

Oh and definately a female name in my book.

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/01/2011 13:11

In Upstairs Downstairs, Persephone was nn Persie which I like alot. I went to school with a Persephone and she was lovely, also a Penny. Like these two, not sure how I feel about Artemis. Knew a girl called Hero once and was never sure about that either. I ramble!!

Go for Persie!

EricNorthpolesChristmas · 01/01/2011 13:12

I would secretly snort at a girl called Persephone, Artemis or Artemesia . Pretentious beyond belief (unless you come from ancient Greece?)

Penelope is nice.

EricNorthpolesChristmas · 01/01/2011 13:13

Persie?

Xmas Hmm

Percy.....?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 01/01/2011 13:20

In UD it was spelt Persie! I think.

Percy sort of makes me think Blackadder

goplayout · 01/01/2011 13:25

Percy is slang for penis! Why, oh why would you want to inflict that on your DD??

Agree with other posters, they are all a bit pretentious (imho).

I know 3 Penelopes. They all hate it, and all get called Penny by friends.

Sorry

ValiumTinselton · 01/01/2011 13:31

Penelope is lovely.

Persephone is way too much, but not ugly.

Artemis is not a sound I like for a girl's name. Arty for short? no. Doesn't work.

Penelope is the best by miles. It's unusual but not as self-consciously and deliberately erudite iyswim.

BelligerentGhoul · 01/01/2011 13:35

Penelope is fine.

I like Persephone but would never use it and agree that it's pretentious. Persie is just horrible.

Artemis doesn't sound nice, imho.

How about Cassandra nn Cassie? Or Pandora? Or Ariadne?

Bumperlicious · 01/01/2011 14:05

Love Persephone after watching Upstairs Downstairs, nn Percy :)

Bumperlicious · 01/01/2011 14:06

Sorry x posted! I have never heard Percy as slang for penis!
