I've never heard Percy slang for Penis either.

goplayout · 01/01/2011 14:53

Bumper it most definitely is slang for penis. Have you never heard of "point Percy at the porcelain"?Smile

My 10yr old DS guffawed /snorted every time it was said!

flaine · 01/01/2011 17:36

Persephone is an altogether wonderful name. Xmas Grin

Love it and such a refreshing change from the zillions of Ellas/Evies/Olivias etc.

A huge breath of fresh air around every nursery and reception class.

Sounds great in any language.

Persephone - gorgeous, go for it.Xmas Smile

My favourite is Penelope. I think this name would suit a lot of little girls and would also suit a range of women.

Persephone is ok-she would have to be a big personality to pull it off theough IMO.

I really do not like Artemis. It doesnt sound like a girls 'name' to me for some reason. More like a company, boat, computer or brand name.

fulltimeworkingmum · 01/01/2011 17:59

All deeply pretentious names, I'm afraid.

swanandduck · 01/01/2011 18:03

I don't like Penelope but I think Penhy is nice.

I agree that the other two are very pretentious. Are you really going to shout "Persephone come here" across the playground??

swanandduck · 01/01/2011 18:03

Sorry, PENNY is nice.

NotAnotherNewNappy · 01/01/2011 22:31

Persephone and Artemis are both too pretentious and masculine sounding, IMHO.

Penelope (nn Penny or Nelly) is lovely - quirky, cute and mythical.

ShoppingDays · 03/01/2011 00:34

I like Penelope (Penny) best from your options.

Persephone is OTT and many people would pronounce it Percy Phone.

Artemisia is fantastic, very nice. An underused flower name and a change from Anastasia and Anneliese (which I also like).

Aldercharm · 03/01/2011 03:07

Thanks

I didn't even think about mythology, I just like these names. I didn't think Persephone was very different to Penelope, is it much more unusual?

After more discussion, Artemis and Artemisia are ones we probably won't use now.

Yes, Persephone is far more unusual than Penelope.

beanlet · 03/01/2011 09:50

Artemis is awesome - really strong. And the name of a goddess - what's more feminine than that? Shock at anyone who thinks it's a boy's name.

hermioneweasley · 03/01/2011 09:58

oh no - i love Artemis! doesn't go with surname so didn't use it. i also love Ariadne but was over ruled on that.

Artemis is the Greek name for goddess Diana - goddess of hunting, child birth and women's health. sounds pretty feminine to me.

or you might consider minerva/athena - goddess of wisdom and war!

ensure · 03/01/2011 10:10

I love the nn Percy. They are all a bit posh for me though.

beanlet · 05/01/2011 11:47

Love Athena too.

Komondor · 05/01/2011 13:16

Penelope nn Penny

ShoppingDays · 05/01/2011 14:17

How about Serafina? Fairly similar sounding to Persephone but not quite as unusual.

cumbria81 · 05/01/2011 14:34

You will come across a pompous twat.

Sorry.

Catsmamma · 05/01/2011 14:37

lovely names for cats...not for a child.

GetOrfMoiLand · 05/01/2011 14:38

I think they are wonderful names.

Artemisia is a great name too and agree re Artemisia Gentileschi.

Other classical names I like: Ariadne, Hera, Thalia, Oenone

Artemis I like the best, though. It is such a great name.

I would certainly not think it was a boys name, to me it is as much a girl's name as Mary.

auntyfash · 05/01/2011 14:40

I used to have a quail called Persephone. Her sisters were called Hermione and Arabella.
