We have a short list of Miriam (Mitzy for short ) or Alice. Thoughts welcome please.

Alice is lovely. I don't like Miriam and think it's a bit middle aged.

boodleboot · 01/01/2011 17:10

i Have a 3month old Alice and am so pleased we went with it in the end. So timeless.

treas · 01/01/2011 17:20

Alice is quite a common popular name around our area.

Can honestly say I only know one Miriam and she is a 40ish yo Dutch Lady. Merry would be a nice nn for Miriam though.

TheFallenMadonna · 01/01/2011 17:21

Miriam. But NOT Mitzy.

JojoMags · 01/01/2011 17:47

Love Alice. Not keen on Miriam, but that is because I associate it with old ladies!

panettoinydog · 01/01/2011 17:48

Alice is quite nice. Miriam is ok too. Mitzy is awful

tebbles · 01/01/2011 17:56

Alice sounds fresher and feminine.

Miriam sounds like a more serious name. I dont really like Mitzy as a nickname either. Miri is nicer IMO

TrillianAstra · 01/01/2011 17:57

Both lovely names, but Miriam has more options for shortening so I would choose that.

MistletoeMush · 01/01/2011 18:49

Like both. Slightly prefer Alice. Don't like Mitzy as a nm prefer Mim or Miri. Not heard of any Alice's called Ali unless they specifically requested to be. Do like Ali as a nm though.

JoJoMam · 01/01/2011 20:48

I have a niece called Alice and she is called 'Ali' by her my brother and SIL but not really by anyone else.

Its a lovely name, around here (Yorkshire) its popular so likely you will know another baby Alice as well as your own but not so popular that the toddler group has five Alice's in the way that there are a million Olivia's or Ruby's IYSWIM?

HappyHogmanay · 01/01/2011 21:00

I prefer Miriam but not keen on Mitzy as a nn.
Alice is nice too though Smile

undercovasanta · 01/01/2011 21:05

Alice was my choice if DS had been a girl. Love it!

TheRedQueen · 01/01/2011 21:19

I love them both!

Wanted to call DD Miriam Alice, but DH vetoed the Miriam. We kept the Alice as her second forename though.

I don't like Mitzy at all. I have heard two shortened forms for Miriam - Miri and Ria (which I also know for Maria, but an acquaintance called Miriam definitely also gets called Ria).

Simmylou · 01/01/2011 21:34

Miriam is not nearly as pretty, classic or beautiful as Alice! Mitzy as a nn is also very common as a dog's name (sorry!).

Alice has timeless elegance, grace, is feminine, great on a girl or a grown woman, works well in any field of work, is classless yet hints at class without shouting it out. It is what I would describe as a tasteful, thoughtful choice of name.

Miriam is clunky (sorry) and does not have timeless elegance or grace. It is in a bracket I personally associate with the following: Barbara, Marion, June, Margaret, Beverley.

Checkmate · 01/01/2011 21:40

I really like Miriam. Alice isn't a bad name, but a little dull perhaps. I know a lot of them.
Miriam (and Miranda) are on my shortlist for DC5. Probably shorten either to Mimi.

Rillyrillygoodlooking · 01/01/2011 23:22

Simmylou, I don't know how you can say that Miriam isn't elegant. I think it is a lovely name, all the names you associate it with are clunky. It can't be clunky as it is well balanced, almost symmetrical.

If anything Miriam is a bit prim, but I quite like that - I must have done else I wouldn't have chosen it for DD.

Simmylou · 02/01/2011 00:12

It's all just personal opinion Rilly Smile I bet you wouldn't like lots of names I do too and that would be ok with me. It'd be a bit dull if we all liked the same names. I do however see what you say about the symmetry of Miriam and that's something I hadn't considered before, along with the hint of prim. It does add a cool, collected element. I do actually like a hint of prim. Although overall, I would still choose Alice as I really love that name - but "that's just me", to take the words of a current advert...

Regardless of our difference of opinion on names, I do like the way you analyse what makes a name in a similar manner. I bet we could have some quite nerdy interesting conversations about various names Smile. What are your thoughts on Constance? Wink

ValiumTinselton · 02/01/2011 00:19

Miriam

Miriam Alice (Alice as mn) sounds good.

ValiumTinselton · 02/01/2011 00:22

Ps, I wouldn't describe Miriam as 'clunky' at all! It's beautiful. A much prettier sound than Alice imo. Which is ok, but can never be really pretty because it ends in ssssssssssssssssssss (obviously I know this is just my opinion).

I really like Margaret and Jane. They both have a cooler vibe than Alice.

hester · 02/01/2011 00:24

Nothing wrong with Alice, but I much prefer Miriam.

ValiumTinselton · 02/01/2011 00:29

I was racking my brains thinking where have I heard the word mitzy recently!?!?!!? and then it came to me. fokk yurr honda civic oiva harrs outside

ShoshanaBlue · 02/01/2011 02:46

Like both names, but think I prefer Miriam. Don't like Mitzy, sounds like a Corgi name to me...

Rillyrillygoodlooking · 02/01/2011 06:02

Oh dear, I had a bit of a strop didn't I Simmylou? :)

My Miriam is just soooo cute I may have accidentally taken it personally - oops!

Constance - also elegant, I think. Given the meaning, definitely dependable. It flows well because of the "on-an" element.

Anyhoo - Miriam Alice is a great combo.

mistressploppy · 02/01/2011 08:11

Miriam

(I am usually known as Mim though Grin)

StealthPolarBear · 02/01/2011 08:20

I have an Alice and we do call her Ali - that's our choice though, not something we've noticed others do. She also gets called Ali-gator when she's having a tantrum
