Hi!

We've just started looking into names and are getting a bit stuck so thought I'd see if anyone has any inspiration for us. We like Scottish names as a general rule but aren't set on this.

So far we like:

Boys
Lewis
Ewan/Euan
Ethan
Harris

Girls
Iona
Isla - my husband loves this but someone at his work has just had a baby girl called Isla
Alana
Mia
Orlaith/Orla
Alyssa

We're struggling beyond this. Any other options come to mind?

Angus
Cameron
Jura

Not keen on many Scottish girls names tbh, and Isla is very popular atm.

SlightlyTubbyHali · 30/12/2010 18:02

What about Ishbel?

I'm crap at boy names (so no help there...)

montysorry · 30/12/2010 18:06

How about Lachlan for a boy (pronounced with an 'o' as in loch) I taught one once and his parents called him Lachie (Lockie) which I loved.

montysorry · 30/12/2010 18:07

Isobel also Scottish. Or Mhari (p. Varri)

montysorry · 30/12/2010 18:08

Catriona? Though quite popular in Scotland I think.

NewYearNewPants · 30/12/2010 18:12

I'm also crap at boy's names!

Mhari is lovely. So is Iona.

Ailis is Gaelic and used in Scotland and Ireland. Lovely name.

Maighread
Kirstin

isn't Ailsa Scottish?

allnightlong · 30/12/2010 18:19

Boys
Finley
Angus (Gus for short)
Alisdair
Sholto
Fraser
Ross

Girls
Morvin
Mhairi
Ainsley
Shona

NineLadiesDancingThroughLife · 30/12/2010 18:21

Not Iona (I own her)

I love Orla. Ailsa is nice too. I've had a bit of a thing for Fiona lately too (not many baby ones around, but pretty nonetheless).

I'm rubbish at girls names - it took us 38 weeks to come up with DD's name, got one just in time!

For boys, I like Lewis off your list. How about

Douglas
Duncan
Hamish (another latest discovery)
Fraser (I love)

allnightlong · 30/12/2010 18:37

Some more

Girls
Caitlin
Marveen not to common now, seen as a little old fashioned.

Roisin/Rosheen more Irish than scottish but still used a lot in scotland.

Boys
Brynn, fairly uncommon but still recognisable.

I prefer Callum meaning Dove over cameron which means bent/large nose.

Douglas I think it's cute but many still see it as terribly old fashioned.

Patrick meaning nobleman.

My favorite is Lachlan.

washngo · 30/12/2010 18:40

Fergus is a great boys name imo my big bro is called fergus and he absolutely loves his name.

Normanshormones · 30/12/2010 19:04

Cameron
Ross
Hamish
Angus
Grant
Andrew

Kirsty
Rowan
Eilidh
Ailsa
Isabel
Mary

tummytickler · 30/12/2010 19:10

Dh is Scottish, so we have thought about this a lot.

Our favourites are Struan, Douglas, Malcolm and Donald for boys.
Morag and Ailsa for girls.
Still might use Morag in the future, but have said no to the others now, so you can have them if you want Grin

mathanxiety · 30/12/2010 19:14

All lovely except Ethan and Alyssa.

I love Seonaid, Eilidh and Marsaili for a girl.

Suggest Murdo, but love Euan.

IneedacleanerIamalazyslattern · 30/12/2010 19:14

I know a Mhairi (there are actually 2 i's in the name) pronouncing the Mh as a V and a Mhairi with it pronounced and an M, I do like the V though so it would be Va-ree said out loud.

KenDoddsDadsDogEatsTinsel · 30/12/2010 19:18

Struan is fab! And also Catriona is my sister's name, love it.

NineLadiesDancingThroughLife · 30/12/2010 20:17

Math, how do you pronounce Eilidh?

It looks very pretty written. DH is half Scottish, so I'm secretly storing names for potential future DC Blush

expatinscotland · 30/12/2010 20:26

I have a Struan. It's a fab name :).

expatinscotland · 30/12/2010 20:27

Eilidh is 'hayley' without the 'h'.

Well, it's actually Helen in Scots Gaelic.

CupcakesHay · 30/12/2010 20:32

Isadora? Duncan?

Eglu · 30/12/2010 21:44

Forgot about

Eilidh
Eilish

I do like those names for a girl

avaj · 30/12/2010 22:16

I love loads of Scottish boys names!
Muir
Fergus
Blair
Innes
Lyle
Keir
Atholl
Harris

For girls how about
Katie
Eilish

Morven
Morna
Catriona

fannybaws · 30/12/2010 22:30

Oh we are having the same problem,
I love Flora and am still working on DP. For a boy Cormac is winning, more Irish really but I love it.

Have also considered Harris. Angus, Finn Fintan,
Love Orla to but Dp not keen, Tara is nice.

PricklyTinsel · 30/12/2010 22:43

Please no-one consider Lachlan/Lachie unless you can say 'ch' as in loch. It's NOT 'ck'.
Also, in Scotland, it's not pronounced Lochie, but Lachie.

My suggestions:
Innes (what I would call another DS, except I won't be having one)

Mirren
Kaetrin (NE Scotland version of Katherine - very old and not used now but I always quite fancied reviving it)
