Hi!

We've just started looking into names and are getting a bit stuck so thought I'd see if anyone has any inspiration for us. We like Scottish names as a general rule but aren't set on this.

So far we like:

Boys
Lewis
Ewan/Euan
Ethan
Harris

Girls
Iona
Isla - my husband loves this but someone at his work has just had a baby girl called Isla
Alana
Mia
Orlaith/Orla
Alyssa

We're struggling beyond this. Any other options come to mind?

Donald, Gregor, Fergus

I don't like Lachlan for some reason. The Irish gaelic version Lorcan is easier to say.

What about Catriona with Iona for short? That way if IOna too popular she can go back to being Catriona. Also like Shona and Isla.

Hugo
Hector
and my fav scottish name is Fraser, which means Man of the Forrest

Nightstar · 31/12/2010 01:21

Oh and Douglas

Iona is so pretty

I know at least 4 babies called Isla / Aila

MollysChambers · 31/12/2010 01:32

BTW Catriona is pronounced "Ca-TREE-uh-nuh" if you want to be old school or "Ca-TREE-nuh / Ca-TREE-nah". It's the Gaelic version of Catherine.

It doesn't rhyme with Fiona or Iona.

Know many grown up Catriona's but no young ones so may be due a revival!

Bideyin · 31/12/2010 01:40

I have a Hamish.

RantyMcRantpants · 31/12/2010 01:45

Fiona
Beth

Bruce
Walter
Donald
Robert
Alan
James
Andrew
Grant
Stuart
Murray
Fraser
Thom
Piper
Finlay/ Findlay

Thanks for the suggestions! That has definitely helpedus with a few more to consider!

I'm liking Fraser, Hamish, Brynn, Fergus and Innes for boys.

I thought girls would be easiest before we started looking into names, but finding theirs harder! Still, I really like the suggestions of Catriona, Mhairi, Shona and Tara.

Will put these options to DH and see where we get from there!! Thanks and Happy New Year!

Like your choices. FWIW Brynn is Welsh though.

Tillyscoutsmum · 31/12/2010 10:04

I have a Fergus. I also love Fraser

Komondor · 31/12/2010 11:52

Love the name Iona.

Komondor · 31/12/2010 11:54

I've always loved the boys name Crawford.

Mairi is lovely.

Re Mairi/Mhairi and other variant spellings:

I think (although I'm not a native speaker, so could be wrong) that the name is Mairi (pronounced Marri), as in "My daughter's name is Mairi."

Mhairi (pronounced Varri)is the vocative(?) case of Mairi, as in "Mhairi! Come in - your dinner's out."

Or there is the Irish equivalent, Maire, which I think is pronounced in the same way.

Yes, Catriona is pronounced Katrina.

Isla77 · 31/12/2010 22:31

Mhari is spelt Mhairi usually - pronounced Vari. Take the h out and it is Mari.

whoodoo · 31/12/2010 22:36

I have a euan, a Callum and a fergus. Loved lachlan but was vetoed by English dh- also agree needs to be pronounced correctly. Struan lovely and we also liked Brodie. Am a fan off Kerr and Carey too.

Piffpaffpoff · 31/12/2010 22:40

I love Morag too, but worry that any potential DD would be called Morag the toerag. Isla and Iona v v popular at the moment so lots of them about.

Also like...
Fiona
Lorna
Morven
Kirsty

sarahtigh · 31/12/2010 23:10

strictly speaking in scottish gaelic mhairi is the genitive form of Mairi( pronouced marry) as all names ( and nouns) change their spelling as the tense/case change rather than the verb, so you could just shout mairi, but it would be mhairi's dog all very technical and so many different traditions would not count myself an expert though by a long shot...if you have no gaelic speaking relatives go ahead with what you like if they do speak gaelic check its spelt right as gaels can get a bit upset at misspelt gaelic and you don't want someone telling you its a spelling mistake, I prefer mairi but that's just me

RRocks · 31/12/2010 23:20

sarahtigh,

Thanks for the clarification. My recollection of my aborted O Grade Gaelic class is dim indeed. Blush

But Mairi it is for me too.

Calum with one l (it's my dad's name)
Niall
Rhoderick
Alastair/Alistair/Alasdair
Gordon
Andrew
Stewart/Stuart
Ian/Iain
Donald/Donal
Ramsay

Maisie
Alison
Ciorsdan/Kirsten
Jean
Elspeth
Shonagh
Senga (it's the Scottish form of Agnes - spelt backwards. Seriously!)

I can't think of any more that are specifically Scottish.

TooImmature2BMum · 02/01/2011 01:35

Yes I can - Karen and Willie. I know Willie has dreadful connotations...

freerangeeggs · 02/01/2011 02:50

I don't think anyone has suggested Murron yet, which is a shame as it's beautiful.

How about Skye? Quite popular in Scotland at the mo and lovely.

Add -ina (prn eye-na) to any male name et voila! You have the name of an unfortunate Scottish woman. Examples: Callumina, Hughina, Fergusina, Jamesina etc.

For a boy, I don't think anyone has mentioned Wallace or Arran yet.

freerangeeggs · 02/01/2011 02:50

Ooh and meant to say - Sorley. I quite like that for a boy, but depending on your accent it might sound like sore-ly.

TooImmature2BMum · 02/01/2011 16:02

Dougal or Douglas? (I'm on a roll now!) Robert/Rob/Rab?
