Not due till April - so in no rush.

Just wondered what people might think of girl's name Hester ...

The well-known novelist John Irving's most famous book is 'A Prayer for Owen Meaney'.

Hester is the female love interest in that book and is known as 'Hester the Molester', for her massive interest in sex, from an early age.

Thank you for making me chuckle - all of you ...

I'm not sure about it myself yet. I liked it last time, but had a son. My partner says his great grandmother was called it - and I have a favourite book 'Precious Bane' and the heroine in that is called Hester.

BUT I do prefer Esther (only a good friend has a baby called that and it feels too weird to copy) and Hester does sound a bit hissy to me like a goose hissing, or a snake.

We'll see ...

I like it but it makes me think of Julia MacKenzie for some reason. Although that's not a bad thing, she's quite cute :)

LittleYellowTeapot · 16/12/2010 12:41

I LOVE it! Smile

hatebeak · 16/12/2010 13:33

Don't think so - Hazel, Fiver and a few others. No Hester, I don't think.

Notevenamouse · 16/12/2010 14:10

I don't like it, it reminds me of snakes.

I really like Hester. I know a teenage Hester and she pulls it off with aplomb.

I LOVE Hesper though, thanks to tinsel for reminding me :)

persephonesnape · 16/12/2010 19:14

JojoMags · 16/12/2010 20:08

Love it. I have has 2 boys and a third on the way, but Hester is my long-standing girl's name. Will probably never get a chance to use it though!

fel1x · 16/12/2010 20:28

I've only ever known one and she was a fab lady.
Lovely name

SleepWhenImDead · 16/12/2010 20:30

geraldinetheluckygoat · 16/12/2010 20:33

hester · 16/12/2010 22:03

Wow, Hester really divides people, doesn't it?!

mummydarlingsausage · 16/12/2010 23:00

I love hester. I know a gorgeous 7 yr old hester so think of her not grannies!

pinkstinks · 17/12/2010 00:00

I love hester!
It reminds me of the His Dark Materials books by Philip Pullman, one of the characters (cant remember his name)had a daemon called Hester and I remember sobbing when she died :(
(she took the form of a rabbit, which could be why a previous poster was thinking of rabbits?)

homebrew · 17/12/2010 13:51

Love it! Unusual, but works for a child and a lady :0)

ElfPantsAtMidnightMass · 17/12/2010 14:12

This is Hester, on the right with the ears :) Pretty sure she's a hare, not a rabbit.

I don't think it's a very pretty name really (sorry Hester) - but then don't like Esther either. That massive ST in the middle combined with the huffy H at the beginning, just sounds like a bit of a fussy, hard person.

But then people like Agatha, Augusta etc and want to use them for their little girls so what do I know? Xmas Grin
