I will be using it anyway, just trying to gauge opinion, as many mums now, or women younger than me pull their faces as if it were the most horrific name on earth.

Yet all the older people I tell seem to love it, am I giving her a name which will result in funny faces from her peers?

It's lovely.

LetThereBeRock · 02/10/2010 23:39

And Beth is a much nicer nickname than Betty.

A1980 · 03/10/2010 00:24

I love it. It's a very regal, classic name.

DancingThroughLife · 03/10/2010 00:34

I heart Elizabeth. Tis DD's middle name, but I sometimes wish we had saved it in case we have another girl in the future.

Great nn potential. My fave is Betsy, but I like all of them really. And I know a 6mo Betty and a 2yo Eliza. And countless Liz/Lizzies in their 20s and 30s.

KittyFoyle · 03/10/2010 17:16

We have a two year old Elizabeth mostly known as Libby or Little Betty by one friend. She can be all sorts of things when she gets older - whatever she likes. She was named after my lovely nan who died when I was 6 in a tribute to Dad's side of the family. But like it very much anyway. Vey many cool and strong female role models with same name.

flopsy1974 · 03/10/2010 20:35

A true classic. Gorgeous name.

maxpower · 03/10/2010 20:36

love it - its our 'girls' name this time round

auburnlizzy78 · 03/10/2010 21:25

I'm Liz to my mates, Lizzy to Mumsnetters, and Elizabeth in business and when I am in trouble with my mum. (I am 31 Grin)

Very versatile name with a range of nicknames which can be deployed depending on the situation. An excellent choice!

Sassybeast · 03/10/2010 21:55

Beautiful name Smile

Heifer · 03/10/2010 22:52

Hatwoman, I just knew you would have such a great name Grin

I too am an Elizabeth, and whilst I used to hate it as a teenager and insist friends called me Liz, I now like it.

I abbrev to Eliz (silent E when pronouced) as I hate it being written down as L.Surname..

These day, as my parents no longer around, no-one calls me Elizabeth and I've just realised I miss it Sad

hatwoman · 04/10/2010 15:16

Heifer - I too announced as a teen that I was to be Liz...but in later life have reclaimed Elizabeth a bit - I use it formally for work (ie in anything written, my email address) but soon become Liz to colleagues. People can be a bit dense though - I can remember at work a number of times people insisting I wasn't on the phone list (organised by first-names). They were looking under L and it hadn;t occured to them to look under E. derr.

hatwoman · 04/10/2010 15:19

I'm also Lizzie to a handful of male friends.(well, 2 in fact) It has a touch of paternalism about it but it also comes with a great dollop of affection, and as the people in question are lovely life-long friends I forgive them. and actually rather like it.

SpeedyGonzalez · 06/10/2010 12:03

Twas my mother's name. And I love it.

DandyDan · 06/10/2010 12:55

One of mine (secondary school age) has a best friend Elizabeth, who is generally called Lizzie, or Liz.

typsical · 28/11/2010 11:55

I love it and love all the nicknames apart from Liz (and that's because I know a not very nice Liz!). Wondering... Is Betsy from Elizabeth...?

MelinaM · 28/11/2010 12:02

Elizabeth is a truly beautiful name, classic yet versatile! ..and my middle nameWink x

EssieW · 28/11/2010 12:07

Beautiful name. Both DD and I have it as middle name. Did consider as first name but DH has cousin already. Love lizzie as short version.

BarbieLovesKen · 28/11/2010 14:23

Beautiful, timeless and classic. Absolutely gorgeous. Am very suprised that people have pulled faces at a name like Elizabeth!! Shock.

Im 25 btw Smile

Lonnie · 28/11/2010 14:55

it is beautiful

OsbegaEthewulf · 28/11/2010 14:58

Elizabeth is a strong, beautiful timeless name. I love it and I really wish I'd given it to my dd for her middle name

onepieceoflollipop · 28/11/2010 14:59

Like it with a z, love it with an s.

(my least favourite abbreviation is Liz - don't like any z names particularly) so having an s means that Liz doesn't really work as a shortened form. :)

noddyholder · 28/11/2010 15:10

Beautiful name

AphraBen · 28/11/2010 15:14

I completely love it. Its DDs middle name. I have two adult friends called Elizabeth and had two friends at school. Always loved it.

muminthemiddle · 28/11/2010 16:44

Can people stop using my dds name as I would hate it to become "common" :)

She is the only Elizabeth at school and we do call her Elizabeth although on occasion she is Princess Lillibet.

AphraBen · 28/11/2010 23:41

goodness, muminthemiddle your initials aren't JS are they?
