I will be using it anyway, just trying to gauge opinion, as many mums now, or women younger than me pull their faces as if it were the most horrific name on earth.

Yet all the older people I tell seem to love it, am I giving her a name which will result in funny faces from her peers?

Elizabeth is always in. It's just never trendy, because it's a classic.

Go with the full name. Beth is nice, but with so many choices you could just see what developed and what she grew into. Maybe she'd always just be an Elizabeth?

emmyloulou · 30/09/2010 22:07

Yes I will go with the full name and see what happens.

I did that with my boys and it's worked, they haven't had their names shortened, either by friends, family or school.

So we will be going with Elizabeth and see what she goes with when she is older.

I love it and it has so many good nicknames if you/she want to shorten it when she's older.

purlcity · 01/10/2010 09:20

I love it!

It is my middle name and I think it is a timeless classic.

We gave DD2 'Elisabetta' as a middle name (my husband is Italian and we have gone for Italian names) but I actually prefer Elizabeth as a name.

GeorginaWorsley · 01/10/2010 12:33

My DD3 is Elizabeth and we always use the full name.
Love it,classic, suits any age from toddler to teen to adult.
Not overly popular or tied to a certain year/decade.

coraltoes · 01/10/2010 13:45

oooh just added this to my shortlist! thanks!

pinkgrasshopper · 01/10/2010 15:55

I love it! We currently have Elisabeth at the top of our list- the spelling is a variant from my husband's Scandanavian routes. I'm a little concerned that DD (if indeed baby is a D) will have to spend life explaining, 'it's Elizabeth, but with an 's'', but then DH has to do a similar thing with his name and he likes it apparently!

rachxx · 01/10/2010 17:47

Its my middle name and I hate it. Im so glad it wasn't my 1st name- my mums mum was called Elizabeth, so thst why it was chose.

DilysPrice · 01/10/2010 17:52

Great, and gives you endless choices to shorten it, whilst still leaving DD free to use the full thing when she's Her Majesty's Ambassador to Khazakstan.

ZeroZeroOne · 01/10/2010 17:53

i am one. i love it. like the shortenings too. one finger typing apols

MentalFloss · 01/10/2010 17:56

You can't go wrong with such a classic name. It is a strong yet feminine name. Tbh in some ways I prefer Elizabeth to any of the shortenings.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 01/10/2010 18:02

Excellent name choice! Grin
DD is an Elizabeth. So much nickname potential, my favourite right now is Lizzy bizzy bumble bee and also a good long name for when she is about to grab something she shouldnt and you can exclaim "ELIZABETH!" Just doesnt have the same effect on DS's name which is only one syllable!

catinthehat2 · 01/10/2010 18:03

Never met an Eliz. I didn't like.

Great name!

I know 2 under 12s now with the name, both very distinctive characters.

I like Z and S version and would have have to toss a coin.

YES, my thoughts as well, but for when she's running a libel court!

SacharissaCripslock · 01/10/2010 18:07

I love it.
Has been on my girls name list three times but I had all boys. Grin

FellatioNelson · 01/10/2010 18:08

I think it's lovely - a very good classic choice but not boring or over-used.

redrobin · 01/10/2010 18:11

so refreshing to have a beautiful name, rather than crimson moon or summat, and love Betty as a nn.

(am sure someone will come and suggest you spell it eleezab'th to make it more modern)

insertexpletive · 01/10/2010 18:12

Really like it - never a good idea to tell people before the birth though (not that there should be any dissent with a lovely name like Elizabeth.
Smile

Hermya321 · 01/10/2010 22:31

Love love love it!!

It's the name of my future daughter, it's a lovely name that will stand the test of time.

lola0109 · 01/10/2010 22:51

I love it but it is my 6mo DD2's name (Elizabeth Ellen after her great grannies). DD1 and I call her Lizzie, DP sticks with Elizabeth.

I did have a moment one day when I wanted to punch an old lady. She was smiling away at DD2 and asked her name, I said Elizabeth and she said "oh you don't hear that now". Then asked DD1's name, she replied Ainslie, and old lady said "oh how come you got the special name" WHAT???? Silly woman!

But I love it and love Lizzie, which people also screw faces up at.

AND Elizabeth is apparently the "most successful" girls name. :)

ifancyashandy · 01/10/2010 23:52

I know an Elizabeth well Grin Wink

Tis a beautiful name indeed!

And YY to Eliabeths being 'most sucessful'!

Never been too keen on Betty though! But always liked Liz, Liza and Elsbeth.

Lizzie will get your head bitten off never been a favourite.

AmandaCooper · 02/10/2010 00:26

Love it. Good choice!

plonker · 02/10/2010 00:32

My favourite ever girls name! Beautiful Smile

BrokenRing · 02/10/2010 10:13

We have an Elisabeth. She is delighted we chose the "s" version for her name, and although she has to say "Elisabeth with an S" for form-filling, everyone always says what a beautiful name it is.

It has been shortened to Lizzie (thinking of Pride & Prejudice),and Liz, but now is almost always Libby or the full name. We know other Elizabeths who are shortened to Beth and also Buffy.

LiquoriceLila · 02/10/2010 21:58

I hate it, its one girls name that I just cant stand. Irrational but there you go.
