We have more than one Scottish name on our shortlist, I really have no preference so help is sought narrowing it down. They would all fit in with my other kids names and our surname. So like/dislike, which is best?

Elspeth
Kirsten
Ishbel

We also wanted a Scottish girls name but we ended up calling her Isobel, I like Elspeth too as we considered calling our wee one Elsie.

Not so keen on Kirsten.

TheUnmentioned · 02/09/2010 12:25

LOVE Elspeth, is my number one choice but dh will not 'allow' it, I could actually cry about it as I love the name so so so much.

We have also considered Ishbel so obviously like that.

Not keen on Kirsten, bit 1970s imo.

diddl · 02/09/2010 12:41

I quite like Kirsten, tbh.

foreverastudent · 02/09/2010 12:56

what about kirsteen?

frankenfanny · 02/09/2010 13:10

I think Kirsten works in Scotland, perhaps a bit dated elsewhere. Kirsteen sounds too much like Christine. My DD loves Elspeth, but we have a couple of non-scottish names on the list, one DH loves and one I love, so we are hoping if we can narrow this down it can be the decider!

Iona
Isla

Sorry didn't realise you weren't looking for more suggestions, so tired I can't see straight today

fridayschild · 02/09/2010 13:14

I would have had an Elspeth but got DSs instead (they are lovely!).

Elspeth would get shortened to Elsie, are you ok with that?

I also like Ishbel.

My other girl's name choice was Mhari

kveta · 02/09/2010 13:15

Elspeth is lovely.

daisystone · 02/09/2010 13:16

Ishbel is different and quite interesting. I don't think I have ever met an Ishbel before.

frankenfanny · 02/09/2010 13:19

I am ok with potential nn for all of them. I don't mind the other suggestions just we have had to rule them out for various reasons. You can see why it is hard to narrow down!

I love both Elspeth and Ishbel. The Elspeth I know (in her twenties) is often called Beth.

PaulineCampbellJones · 02/09/2010 14:06

Kirsten and Ishbel. Don't like Elspeth at all.

A1980 · 02/09/2010 14:14

Catriona

(pronounced Ka-tree-na)

It's Scottish, Irish and Gaelic origin.. but close enough.

A1980 · 02/09/2010 14:23

God sorry... didn't read the first post properly. I thought you wanted ideas for scottish names....! Sorry :)

I like Kirsten the best. Very pretty.

frankenfanny · 02/09/2010 14:36

so far Elspeth is ahead. Keep the opinions coming- all gratefully received thanks!

I love the name Elspeth, it was on my list for DD2 but DH vetoed it Sad

FessaEst · 02/09/2010 14:39

Love, love Elspeth, always have but we have an Elizabeth in the family so it was a no-go.

I also like Elsie and love Elsa but agree you need to be happy with those as shortenings.

Ishbel makes me think "Ishbel Anderson" - Trebizon?

Not that keen on Kirsten I'm afraid.

Have always loved Eilidh.......

mathanxiety · 02/09/2010 17:10

Ishbel (I love)
Kirsten
Elspeth
in that order. I think Elspeth sounds a bit like spitting something out.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 02/09/2010 17:12

Kirsten isn't exactly Scottish..but it does work very well with a Scottish surname Wink

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 02/09/2010 17:13

(it's Danish/Norwegian I think)

brimfull · 02/09/2010 17:14

Ishbel sounds like a pissed person trying to say Isabel.

I like Fiona Grin

MercyMe · 02/09/2010 18:02

Elspeth is nice, not keen on Ishbel at all i'm afraid. What about Kirsty instead of Kirsten? Much more scottish sounding.

Jenbot · 02/09/2010 21:43

I like Elspeth best.

frankenfanny · 02/09/2010 21:47

so far;

  1. Elspeth
  2. Ishbel
  3. Kirsten

Thanks this is all helping.
