We have more than one Scottish name on our shortlist, I really have no preference so help is sought narrowing it down. They would all fit in with my other kids names and our surname. So like/dislike, which is best?

Elspeth
Kirsten
Ishbel

I love Elspeth and Kirsten but not Ishbel. It was my DM's name of choice for me but fortunately she didn't use it. MUCH prefer Isobel.

BikeRunSki · 02/09/2010 21:55

Love Kirsten, it was on my girl's list.

Raejj · 02/09/2010 21:56

Kirsten

Very mixed opinions, honestly beginning to wish I was having triplets!

  1. Kirsten
  1. Elspeth
  1. Ishbel
JumpJockey · 03/09/2010 21:03

DD has Kirsten as a middle name (father is Scottish) but we didn't want it as a first name as it would have been too much with her Scottish surname.

  1. Kirsten
  2. Ishbel
  3. Elspeth
Habbibu · 03/09/2010 21:05

Elspeth, then Ishbel, then Kirsten

frankenfanny · 03/09/2010 21:06

Fanjo I will try that but I really can't choose; however a rough poll of the replies I got has Elspeth out in front, and my daughter loves it- going to be her sister. Just have to convince DH that his name choice is not going to run :o

i think Kirsten works well with a very Scottish surname Wink

Habbibu · 03/09/2010 21:08

Though I think I prefer the Gaelic spelling Iseabail. Only if you're in Scotland, though. Otherwise her life will be a constant round of "I S E, yes, E. A...."

SparkyMalarky · 03/09/2010 21:08

Elspeth is gorgeous - would be top of my list if we have another DD.

Not keen on Kirsten, but Ishbel's ok. Not as lovely as Elspeth though :)

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 03/09/2010 21:10

i love kirsten and ishbel, elspeth seems a bit dreary and lispy to me

habbibu you're right, I like Gaelic spellings but even for Scottish people they are too much sometimes,so I prefer the simplified versions.

I'm Kirsty (also Scottish) and I love it, although I often get people mistaking it for Kirsten or Kristen. It's a lovely name, just unusual enough in the UK and not too many ways to shorten it; I get Kitty, Kooki and Kush (I have a lot of arty friends lol).

Good luck; Scottish names rock!
