Hubbie doesnt like the only girls name I like

If my baby is a girl, I want to call her Clarissa, but hubbie doesnt like it. He thinks it is a poncey names.

There are no other girls names I like - hubbie thinks I'm being unreasonable. Originally there were lots of names I like, but I've become so focused on Clarissa - there are now none.

Can you think of any good shortenings for Clarissa to help convince hubbie, or altenate/ similar names?

The following are names I don't like or don't go with our surname (which are slightly similar):

Clara
Kiera
Carrie
Melissa
Charis
Clarice
Claudia

Hmmmm.

Caroline
Camilla
(are you set on something beginning with a "C"?)

Kathleen123 · 23/08/2010 16:11

Not really, set on a C. I also like K and L.

Dislike both those names too I'm afraid.

She may end up being Laura (hubbie likes it and I don't hate it), at this rate.

You have to let it go and find another, different name, that you both like imho. As with anything in a relationship, naming your children is a compromise - if he doesn't like it, there's no point trying to convince him. You both have to 'connect' with whatever you eventually choose.

Kathleen123 · 23/08/2010 16:21

Thanks BelliferentGhoul - I agree, you are right, I'll let it go (said through gritted teeth)

I'm currently going through something similar. I spend ages looking through books and researching names and find one, get really attached to it and start imagining life with a child with this name, then DH doesn't like it! It's so depressing and it's making me not enjoy something that should be so enjoyable. We have a list of names that neither of us minds but they aren't names I love or really want to call our child. It's so frustrating and I really sympathise with you. I keep telling myself there is a name out there that we will both love. If someone finds it please can they pass it on!

swanandduck · 23/08/2010 16:23

I think you're being a bit silly tbh. How can you only like one single girl's name in the whole world. I think what you really mean is that you're not willing to relinquish your favourite name even though your oh doesn't like it.

bigbluebump · 23/08/2010 16:32

Personally I love Clarissa and don't see what is 'poncy' about it. Nothing more than about Caroline, Camilla or Catherine.

But if your dh doesn't like it, you're going to have to continue to find a name you both love, I think.

diddl · 23/08/2010 16:37

Larissa?
Lara?

sonniebonnie · 23/08/2010 16:38

Clementine
Clara
Cleopatra
Camilla
Candice

Kathleen123 · 23/08/2010 16:39

I know, I'm being silly. It is the only name so far I have got very attached to.

Joanney, thank you. I sympathise with you.

I dont think its poncey either bigbluebump.

Hubbie doesnt like names that are more than two syllables.

I know a 3 year old Clarissa. She get called Clarrie so often she doesn't actually respond to Clarissa or think of it as her name!

I also know a Larissa who gets called Larry as a NN.

sonniebonnie · 23/08/2010 16:44

Larry? Not sure I'd want that nickname as a teenage girl Smile.

BelligerentGhoul · 23/08/2010 16:45

Cassie? Alice? Louisa?

sonniebonnie · 23/08/2010 16:46

Cassandra, nickname Cassie?

Kathleen123 · 23/08/2010 16:52

Louisa - an ex of hubbies.
Cassandra - too close to sandra (sorry to any Sandras)
Alice - disliked v much an Alice at School, and afraid it has spoilt the name for me,

Too fussy. I like Clarissa shortened to Clarrie, may see if this influences hubbie, then give up altogether.

What about Clarissa shortened to Clara? Would he go for that?

Or try giving him free rein on the middle names...if he lets you have your choice of first name.

pranma · 23/08/2010 17:19

Vanessa
Alicia
Carola

Jamieandhismagictorch · 23/08/2010 17:32

Constance/Connie
Cassandra as suggested by sonniebonnie above

or

Lana
Lydia

sedgiebaby · 23/08/2010 21:34

Clea; Laurel; Candace; Cassia

sleepingsowell · 23/08/2010 22:10

How about Carice? Similar to Clarissa but less syllables!

If you only love Clarissa though I don't think you should have to give it up completely yet. Let your husband live with it longer, and perhaps see how it suits when the baby is here....

Rissa? My favourite character in a book when I was a child was Clarissa shortened to Rissa.
