If my baby is a girl, I want to call her Clarissa, but hubbie doesnt like it. He thinks it is a poncey names.

There are no other girls names I like - hubbie thinks I'm being unreasonable. Originally there were lots of names I like, but I've become so focused on Clarissa - there are now none.

Can you think of any good shortenings for Clarissa to help convince hubbie, or altenate/ similar names?

The following are names I don't like or don't go with our surname (which are slightly similar):

Clara
Kiera
Carrie
Melissa
Charis
Clarice
Claudia

Hmmmm.

Shame, I like Clarissa, I also like Claudia from your list and Clara.

Does your DH not like these either.

I'm not keen on his choice of Laura. If you are not that fussed, keep going until you find a name that you both agree on.

DetectivePotato · 24/08/2010 10:06

Oh sorry, you said they are names that you don't like.

LadyCressida · 24/08/2010 11:19

My name is v similar sounding :)

But he'd prob say that was poncey too ;)

Elsa123 · 24/08/2010 13:29

How about Charissa?

GooseyLoosey · 24/08/2010 13:33

don't go for something similar to the name you can't have or it will always be a compromise name. Move on and find something different - you will find a name you can both like.

I knew a Charissa at school, I think it's a lovely name and quite unusual afaik. Only problem is you/she might end up having to correct people all the time: 'no, not Clarissa, Charissa' etc.

I like Laura too, it was very popular when I was growing up though, not sure if that's still the case.

Kathleen - I believe you have posted on the wrong thread ..

While you are here, tell me what you think of my suggestions? I was feeling inspired yesterday

Kathleen123 · 24/08/2010 18:22

Sorry Susan was for a different posting

Thanks all for the advice,

I'm moving from Clarissa type names for the time being on GooseyLooseys advice.

I'm secretly half hoping DH will come round though.

I think Clarissa is lovely, not poncey at all and I also think that you are the one carrying DD around with you for nearly 10 months, you are the one giving birth and you are the one who has to recover afterwards, so your choice of name has greater weighting than his!! I think you lot are being terribly nice to your DH's. When I had my DD's, after fairly traumatic pregnancies and c-sections, I lay there in the surgical gown and said to DH we are calling her *, and he had the good sense to simply nod and agree. (I think he would have agreed to me calling them Ermintrude or Druscilla to be honest at that point!!) I pointed out to him, his contribution at that stage had been 60 seconds worth IYSWIM Wink, mine had been up to 10 months, major body changes and major surgery, therefore I had majority shares of the votes on naming!! So, Kathleen, my thoughts would be to bide your time and chose your moment..... if you want Clarissa, then Clarissa you should have..... DH should be so overwhelmed/chuffed to bits and totally in love with his new daughter that he wants to give you the world (and feel free to point this out to him - or prime a friend/your Mum or someone else to point it out to him (if needs be) whilst he is still in the overwhelmed "She's so small and beautiful, SOB" stage... and your choice of name is not really that much for him to give!!! Wink

oh yes, nothing Ike forcing the childs father to agree to a name he hates Hmm

Lyn3 · 25/08/2010 14:37

Forcing??? Oh for goodness sake, I am not suggesting you hold a gun to his head....
