we have less than 2 weeks to go and just cannopt find ANY NAMES that we feel anything other than lack of dislike for. have read every list / book going. are we just too hung up on this? should we just go for something common, simple, easy?
not brave enough to go for some that we like a bit more in case the child / everyone else dislikes it.

What are the ones you like more than others? It's a big responsibility, I was lucky both times I had names that I loved but can see if you don't love any it must be tough.

MummyLovesSadie · 22/08/2010 21:22

What do you mean not brave enough to go for ones you like a bit more? Could you list what they are? Why are you not sure about them? You have to keep in mind that there will always be someone somewhere that'll dislike your chosen name. Personally I wouldn't settle for something common or easy.

I have 7 weeks to go & I'm fed-up to the back teeth of bloody baby name books too! Grin

stinkypants · 22/08/2010 21:31

sorry - i mean the more wacky names - eg felix - altho maybe this is no longer wacky as according to another thread on here this is gaining popularity - so going off it anyway in case becomes too trendy.
we just disagree over this so much. tempted to just wait and see what we have and then decide - so it will be a nameless wonder!

I really like Felix! I bloody hate run-of-the-mill names so I'm interested as to what the names you like a bit more are! Two of the girls name I like are Mabel & Maude but I'm not using them as I fear they may be on the up & will be popular in the next couple of years.

stinkypants · 22/08/2010 21:40

signing off now - big pregnant ladies need early nights!!! have talked myself back into felix again - for now!!!!!!!!

OP posts:
stinkypants · 22/08/2010 21:41

i like mabel a lot too!

One last thing, have you tried this book? It is by far the best baby name book I've read. You can get it from Waterstones.

SirBoobAlot · 22/08/2010 21:57

Felix is lovely, go for that!

Its popular to the level that its "normal", IYSWIM, but not as popular as Jack.

What other names do you like? Do you know what sex the baby is?

Clary · 22/08/2010 22:38

Felix is nice. I know one or two so not mahoosively big (I know a lot of children).

Post yr other options for us tmrw OP Grin

stinkypants · 23/08/2010 12:51

ok - thanks for that!!
other options are:
jacob / jake (me/hubby)
oliver (hubby not me)
callum (but a friend's child)
marcus (but not really keen)
aaron (another friend's child who hardly ever see)

but i am really liking felix again now - just got to convince husband. he worries that it sounds 'poncey' or too characterful- but he doesnt like anything else much either!!

girls choices -
kirsty (both of us)
felicity (me)
rhiannon (both)
isla (both)
verity (both)
rachel (me)
jessica (going off this now)
brooke (me only)
ruth (me only)
connie (but not keen as it's a nn and not sure about constance)

this list is much easier to write as a like lots of girls' names - so it's bound to be a boy!! which is equally fab but harder to name - no idea why!!

OP posts:
stinkypants · 23/08/2010 12:54

will have a look at that link for book

Felix is a seriously lovely name!!

Girls my favourite is isla, but I do quite like 'different' names!

morganbuffay · 23/08/2010 15:41

Felix isn't so wacky! Depends where you live I suppose, but if it isn't in the top 100 already it's close.

Of your girls' names, my favourite for you is Rhiannon, seeing as you both like it (I discounted anything that only one of you liked), it's a beautiful name, it's more timeless than something very trendy and 'now' like Isla, and imho it has a bit more substance and 'magic' to it than, say Kirsty or Connie.

Clary · 23/08/2010 19:02

Jacob Oliver and Callum are all pretty popular. DS2 has three Olivers in his year (about 25 boys).

Marcus is nice, Aaron is NTMT.

Yr girls' names are a bit less popular; apart from Jessica (lots) I know one small Ruth and two small COnstances. I like Constance and Felicity of yrs.

stinkypants · 23/08/2010 20:17

thank you - really helpful advice. i totally agree about rhiannon so i'm glad to hear that.
i know what you mean about our boy choices being a bit popular - so based on the types of names we like for girls, what would be equivalent boys' names?!!!!! we are still debating felix but something is not quite quite right with it.

OP posts:
Surprise · 23/08/2010 20:29

Verity Ruth would be my choice from your list (for a girl, obviously Grin).

Boys' names - how about simple, strong names like John, James or Andrew? I love Felix, and also Leon and Lawrence.

ellesabe · 24/08/2010 10:24

If you want boys names that are not too wacky but not too boring, how about...
Cameron
Dominic
Sebastian
Nathan
Lucas

Come one everyone, there must be loads more!

stinkypants · 24/08/2010 19:32

thank you for those ideas. we are still struggling. saw the in laws and stupidly ran a few past them - they looked somewhat uninspired by any of them!!!
think we'll give up now til it's born )-:

atmywitssend · 24/08/2010 19:36

Just wait to what baby looks like! We just knew what DS's name was when we saw him.

horatia · 24/08/2010 23:19

Felix - like, great name :)
Jacob/Jake - like
Oliver - quite like
Callum - not keen
Marcus - dislike, how about Mark or Marius?
Aaron - like, if pronounced Air-on

Kirsty - like
Felicity - like
Rhiannon - not particularly keen
Isla - Isla St Clair
Verity - not keen
Rachel - like
Jessica - like, popular for good reason
Brooke - don't like
Ruth - like
Connie - like if nn for Constance)

Combinations I like are........

Felix Aaron
Felix Jacob
Aaron Felix
Aaron Jacob

Felicity Rachel
Felicity Ruth
Kirsty Rachel
Kirsty Ruth
Rachel Felicity
Rachel Constance
Ruth Felicity
Ruth Constance
Constance Rachel

horatia · 24/08/2010 23:21

Jessica Rachel

sedgiebaby · 25/08/2010 11:28

I feel the same and I have that book which was suggested in the thread (yes it's excellent out of the 8 I own) and yet I feel its getting harder not easier and I'm basically full term :S

I really like Verity on your list (DH has rejected it for our DD), nothing jumps out from your boys list sorry. Fond of Caleb, Jude and Gabriel myself...

stinkypants · 25/08/2010 12:30

thanks. i have ordered that book off amazon too.
i like all the girl names quite a lot, espec felicity at the moment - it is always the boy names that cause the most trouble.
i know what you mean that none of them really stand out. my husband is now quite strongly opposed to felix so i dont think that is going to happen. my parents like it but his just related it straight to catfood and were not keen. i know it is up to us, but it is difficult when we know key people in the child's life are anti.
i really feel that none of the boy list is 'the one'!!

Please don't inflict the name Felix on your child.

It's hideous.

horatia · 25/08/2010 20:02

How about

Joshua
Peter
Elias
Daniel
Jonathan
Miles
Samuel
James
Lewis
Richard
Thomas
William
