(Reposted as I forgot to put a title in last one!)
DH and I have managed to come up with a long 'short-list' and while I like the names they aren't jumping out at me, I'm not sure any of them is the one. I'm interested in your opinions and other options to inspire me.

This is our joint list:
Mia
Beatrice
Niamh
Matilda
Tabitha
Nia
Isabella
Mimi
Ava

There are a couple more I think but can't recall them off the top of my head.

Other names that I like that DH has vetoed are:
Claudia
Betty
Aurelia
Isadora
Cecila
Andrina
Camille

Names that DH liked but I vetoed are:
Daisy
Gretchen
Clara
Tamara

What do you think? Any other ideas?

Tamara
Elspeth
Elouise
Daphne
Georgia
Lucy

DetectivePotato · 22/08/2010 19:27

I love Mia, it is pretty common though if that bothers you. I also love Claudia from your list but I know DH wouldn't go there. I like Clara from your DH's list.

Elizabeth (very underrated name IMHO)
Amelia
Arabella
Phoebe
Alannah
Freya
Ruby
Isla
Tia
Amelle

BelligerentGhoul · 22/08/2010 19:30

Mia - don't like
Beatrice - love
Niamh - love
Matilda - like a lot
Tabitha - less fond
Nia - dislike
Isabella - lovely
Mimi - nice as a nn for Marianne or Miranda
Ava - dislike

Claudia - like
Betty - no but nice as nn for Elizabeth
Aurelia - mouthful
Isadora - love this
Cecila - nice
Andrina - ooh no, I don't like that at all, sorry
Camille - not fond

Daisy - love this
Gretchen - ok
Clara - ok
Tamara - hate this

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 22/08/2010 19:38

I like

Matilda and Ava from your joint list

Betty from your list (thought would have Elizabeth on BC)

If DH like Gretchen but you don't what about Greta?

Other names you might like:

Ianthe
Posy
Tansy

BelligerentGhoul · 22/08/2010 19:41

Another name that you may like is Yolande. Or maybe Hermione (could have nn Mimi).

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 22/08/2010 19:45

I know a Hermione known as Mimi.

Hulababy · 22/08/2010 19:53

Mia - It's ok, not that keen
Beatrice - quite nice, not keen on bea as a nn
Niamh - not so keen on this
Matilda - lovely name, love nn Tilly too
Tabitha - not for me, reminds me of a cat TBH
Nia - OK, prefer to Mia for some reason
Isabella - OK, prefer Anabella
Mimi - sounds like a nn to me
Ava - how will you pronouce it?
Claudia - I don't like this
Betty - fine as a nn; for Elisabeth?
Aurelia - qyite like this
Isadora - not as keen
Cecila - don't like this
Andrina - don't like
Camille - fine
Daisy - very pretty
Gretchen - don't like; prefer Greta although still not vastly
Clara - prefer Claire
Tamara - don't like

Bumperlicious · 22/08/2010 19:55

Ooh, am liking Hermione as a nn for Mimi.

Elizabeth I just can't go for as it's my mum's name, and I just associate it with her, not a bad thing, but it's her name.

I think Greta was also on DH's list, not keen though, they are both a bit Sound of Music for my liking Grin

Am liking the suggestions though.

Isla is nice but it rhymes with DD's names.

DH likes Arabella, but I think it is a bit 'Times Sunday Supplement' IYKWIM. Both like Annabella or Annabelle but not Anna as an inevitable nn. I love Bella, but we have a surname that would make the child sound like a coffee or pasta chain!

Ubiquity of the name doesn't bother DH but it bothers me a little, mainly because I don't want the name to identify DD as part of a particular demographic, though I suppose that is inevitable.

Matilda is probably top of our list but while I like it, I'm not sure if it is The One.

Hulababy · 22/08/2010 19:56

I like Hermione

Bumperlicious · 23/08/2010 16:47

Am really liking Hermione but DH not keen, he's such a PITA! The sooner he realises this should be my decision the better Grin

Any more suggestions?

Bumperlicious · 28/08/2010 11:33

Just bumping my thread as I'm still not convinced by any of the names on our joint list, I like them but I don't love them. DH is most keen on Matilda, but I don't know if it is pretty enough.

Any more inspiration?

Cortina · 28/08/2010 12:04

Like Emily (thinner on the ground now) with Mimi as a nickname. I know two children called Emily with the nickname Mimi and I think this works. You have a traditional name with a cutesy nickname which can be dropped later on if she chooses.

What about Caroline or Carolina? I like Irene too (I know a very chic European one). Also love Carine as in Roitfeld, editor of Vogue.

Daphne is quite nice.

Quite like Matilda, I knew one nm Mattie (which I prefer to Tilly - there are too many Tillys and this puts me off Miranda I am afraid).

Anabella I like, Rosamund/Rosamond, Antonia, Camilla.

Bumperlicious · 30/08/2010 17:45

Thanks Cortina.

Not keen on Emily. Love Camilla but DH says no. We both quite like Anabelle but not the inevitable 'Anna' nn (can't have Belle or Bella due to surname).

Daphne is my MIL.

Like Carine, am going to suggest that one to DH.

Mia - gorgeous
Beatrice - lovely
Niamh - s'ok
Matilda - cute
Tabitha - cute
Nia - Mia is much nicer
Isabella - ok. very popular.
Mimi - very cute
Ava - dislike

My fav from your list is Mia. We have a little Mia who goes by the nn Mimi, so they get my vote Grin

diddl · 30/08/2010 18:18

Prefer Isobel to Isabella.

Like Claudia.

Also Cecily or Celia rather than Cecilia.

Imogen, Miranda, Harriet?

horatia · 31/08/2010 13:39

I like Beatrice and Isabella best from the list of names you both like :)

Not keen on Tabitha or Matilda.

smother · 31/08/2010 14:45

Ooh, what a lot of names! here goes

Mia - v pretty but v popular
Beatrice - ok, a bit posh, like the nn Bea
Niamh - love this
Matilda - nope, way too popular to be at all interesting now
Tabitha - ok but don't like the shortenings
Nia - near
Isabella - pretty but hear it everywhere
Mimi - only as a nn (e.g. for miriam)
Ava - bored of this name now

Claudia - ok
Betty - love this as a nn
Aurelia - nope
Isadora - wing
Cecila - yuk
Andrina - yuk
Camille - like.

Daisy - well vetoed. it's ok on a 2 year old, ridiculous from 16 years old onwards
Gretchen - not nice
Clara - why vetoed? this is the best on your list by some way!
Tamara - ok, a bit posh - e.g. beckwith

Bumperlicious · 31/08/2010 15:50

Thanks for the honest responses smother Grin. What do you mean by 'wing' as a response to Isadora?

I don't know, should I be rethinking Clara? Though now I think about it our surname begins with C and end in an 'a' sound so not sure it would even work. Could it be a nn for Clarissa? Not sure if I like it, though am willing to revisit the vetoes, except Daisy, it's not going to be Daisy. Am going to ask DH to think again about my vetoes.

Do you think it will be easier when she is born? The names on our list are all nice, I just can't imaging committing to any of them. Didn't have this problem with DD.

OP posts:
smother · 31/08/2010 16:05

Isadora Wing is the heroine in erica jong's The fear of flying - great book (go read!) but not necessary one for inspiration for baby's names! I have to say that it's probably not a reference most people would think of so I really wouldn't worry about it!

musicmadness · 31/08/2010 16:08

Mia - nice
Beatrice - ok I guess
Niamh - don't like
Matilda - nice
Tabitha -love it, actually one of my friends calls me this, its nothing like my name but he thought it suited me (he was a bit drunk at the time though Wink)
Nia - nope
Isabella - maybe
Mimi - love it but better as a nickname IMO. Can't imagine a lawyer/doctor called Mimi really.
Ava - nope

Claudia - nope
Betty - nope
Aurelia - love it
Isadora - nope
Cecila maybe but probably no
Andrina - nope
Camille - nope

Daisy - nope
Gretchen - nope
Clara - maybe
Tamara - love it

If nothing is jumping out at you why not have a shortlist, wait until she is born and then see if she just looks like one of the names to you?

minipie · 31/08/2010 16:12

I like the names on your joint list much better than any of the options that only you or DH like.

Mia - Lovely name
Beatrice - Like, Bea is gorgeous nn too
Niamh - Lovely
Matilda - OK but a bit hard sounding. and very popular at the moment
Tabitha - nice but is a cat name/mumsy name to me
Nia - sounds made up to me
Isabella - but frilly for me (and very very popular)
Mimi - nickname - what would be the full name?
Ava - quite nice

I would say, make a short list (I would pick Mia, Beatrice and Niamh) and then choose once she arrives.

How about Maeve or Megan to add to your list?

NamedAfterTheBandActually · 31/08/2010 16:12

Mia- very popular and it's a bit meh
Beatrice- DD's middle name, I adore it. Trixy and Bea are nice nicknames
Niamh- Lovely
Matilda- I have one but don't spell it that way. Too many Tillys in the world. Mine is a Tildy (her choice)
Tabitha- I like this a lot
Nia- There's a sex shop locally called Nia
Isabella- no, there are 8 million Isabella/Isobels in our village and we only have a population of 300
Mimi- pretty but it's a nickname
Ava- No, all babies not called Eva, Ella or Isobel are called Ava

Esme
Josephine
Flora
Meredith
Miriam
Annie

Bumperlicious · 31/08/2010 17:00

I really don;t want a 'meh' name, and that's how I feel about a lot of the names we have.

DH doesn't care about popularity but I do a bit. I think we will just have to have a short list, this might be as short as the list gets though!

I'm going ask DH to reconsider adding Claudia to the list and I will think about Clara (what about Clarabel? To Thomas the Tank Engine?). I'm going to ask him to consider Hermione, and Iris has popped up on a few threads and I think it might be a contender.

I love Isadora, but I think DH is a firm no on that. Not sure we could pull it off either, we are not yummy enough!

pinkgrasshopper · 31/08/2010 17:09

Mia - very poular at the moment
Beatrice- love it
Niamh- lovely, particularly if you have Irish connections
Matilda- always reminds me of the Aussie bashing sports song to the tune of Waltzing Matilda 'I f**ked Matilda, and so did my mate'- so sorry, which is a great shame as I love this name...
Tabitha- Lovely
Nia- Should be nice, but for some reason isn't
Isabella- VERY popular, top name in USA last year according to one list I've seen
Mimi- very cute, TOO cute?
Ava- I like this

Good luck.

GuntherMcKilocodie · 31/08/2010 17:26

How about Rosa?
