What do you think of Hester?

What do you think of Hester as a girl's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

I think it is absolutely beautiful.

I hate it.

It reminds me of The Scarlet Letter - the heroine is called Hester and has a rather grim life.

Don't like it at all, I'm afraid. Nor Esther.

Love it - one of my favourites, like the nn Hetty as well, (reminds me of cool heroine from What Hetty Did) though I don't think it is generally shortened. Esther is fine but much less uncommon, I think.

I also like Kester for a boy and Hebe for a girl, both unusual & along the same lines. (Actually, I can just imagine the posts on here if I suggested calling a baby Hebe :) )

My cousin is called Hesma which I've never heard on anyone else, but I think is utterly beautiful.

I quite like Esther. Hester reminds me of A Prayere for Owen Meany.

Makes me think of Hester the Molester (Owen Meany). A very powerful if rather muddled character. As a name I think it's OK.

Though in our family everything gets shortened so you might want to think how you feel about your dd being called Hess. Which again, I rather like if I can shift the Nazi connotations...

I went to school with a lovely Esther and I suppose it's similar. In fact, look at that, you just take the "h" out of the middle and stick it on the front and it's the same name!

Hate it, and Esther too.

I like it but prefer the name Esther which is at the top of our baby names list. If it is something you love, then go for it

I'm not keen on it.It's quite harsh sounding.
