What do you think of Hester as a girl's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.

I think it is absolutely beautiful.

Bonsoir · 21/08/2010 19:02

I hate it.

midnightexpress · 21/08/2010 19:05

It reminds me of The Scarlet Letter - the heroine is called Hester and has a rather grim life.

5DollarShake · 21/08/2010 19:20

Don't like it at all, I'm afraid. Nor Esther.

Love it - one of my favourites, like the nn Hetty as well, (reminds me of cool heroine from What Hetty Did) though I don't think it is generally shortened. Esther is fine but much less uncommon, I think.

I also like Kester for a boy and Hebe for a girl, both unusual & along the same lines. (Actually, I can just imagine the posts on here if I suggested calling a baby Hebe :) )

chaostrulyreigns · 21/08/2010 20:02

I like it.

My cousin is called Hesma which I've never heard on anyone else, but I think is utterly beautiful.

letsblowthistacostand · 21/08/2010 20:03

I quite like Esther. Hester reminds me of A Prayere for Owen Meany.

LetThereBeRock · 21/08/2010 20:15

Horrid.

horatia · 21/08/2010 20:40

I don't like it, but I like Esther.

seaturtle · 21/08/2010 21:52

I like it. It also reminds me of The Scarlet Letter.

nooka · 21/08/2010 21:55

Makes me think of Hester the Molester (Owen Meany). A very powerful if rather muddled character. As a name I think it's OK.

LynetteScavo · 21/08/2010 22:00

I don't like it.

zippy539 · 21/08/2010 22:07

I rather like it.

zippy539 · 21/08/2010 22:08

Though in our family everything gets shortened so you might want to think how you feel about your dd being called Hess. Which again, I rather like if I can shift the Nazi connotations...

suwoo · 21/08/2010 22:12

I really like it. Not sure I would have the balls? to use it though.

hester · 21/08/2010 22:13

Love it Grin

(It's not my RL name, btw. Wish it was.)

chipmonkey · 21/08/2010 22:29

Grin at hester. Do you really like it?

zenon · 21/08/2010 22:41

Hester and Hebe are both great names. Love Hester.Smile

hester · 21/08/2010 22:45

Yes yes yes! (And Dorcas, and Mordechai... am I undermining my own case here?)

There was a very fab Mumsnetter whose RL name was Hester. Don't know if she's still posting.

pooka · 21/08/2010 22:47

I like it.

chipmonkey · 21/08/2010 22:50

I went to school with a lovely Esther and I suppose it's similar. In fact, look at that, you just take the "h" out of the middle and stick it on the front and it's the same name!Grin

DetectivePotato · 21/08/2010 23:28

Hate it, and Esther too.

Roz14 · 22/08/2010 00:32

I like it but prefer the name Esther which is at the top of our baby names list. If it is something you love, then go for it Smile

A1980 · 22/08/2010 01:35

I'm not keen on it.It's quite harsh sounding.
