What do you think of Precious as a girl's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.
would it be a blessing or a burden to go through life with this name

should have added not sure if people would always associate it with the lord of the rings

Please be a joke. Hmm

tummytickler · 14/08/2010 23:43

I think it is daft. I would hate to be called Precious.

tummytickler · 14/08/2010 23:44

No, I would not associate it with LotR. Still awful though.

Sinkingfeeling · 14/08/2010 23:45

I think immediately of Precious Ramotswe, the Number One Lady Detective. I quite like it and if I heard it would assume that the baby had African ancestry.

ZacharyQuack · 14/08/2010 23:46

It would be like pinning a "Kick Me" sign on the poor child's back.

almostinvisiblewoman · 14/08/2010 23:51

i had been reasding no 1 ladies detective agency and also heard it on womens hour this week which bought it to mind but i also felt it would be more a burden than a blessing to lumber a child . was just checking that i was not being overly negative about it .

I agree with Sinkingfeeling.

SpringHeeledJack · 14/08/2010 23:55

we had three kids (same family) at our school called Precious Beloved and Hosanna

no-one turned a hair

(I think it's lovely meself- but I'd sneak it in as a middle name personally Grin)

almostinvisiblewoman · 15/08/2010 00:01

i do like it but not sure im brave enough to use it as a first name

SkiHorseWonAWean · 15/08/2010 08:10

Middle names First and Born right?

Hideous.

seeker · 15/08/2010 08:13

Depends on your heritage.

Grockle · 15/08/2010 08:17

Depends on heritage, to a certain extent. I know Precious, Princess and Darling, all from Nigeria. No-one bats an eyelid at their names.

ruddynorah · 15/08/2010 08:23

No way. I'd think of the girl from the film precious who had two kids by her dad and lived with her abusive mother. No way.

bamboostalks · 15/08/2010 08:42

It is a very popular African/frican descent name round here and not at all unusual.

prozacfairy · 15/08/2010 17:22

Hmm have you ever seen the episode of Friends when Phoebe meets Mike's ex who is called Precious?

Phoebe cracks a few jokes about it being a dog's name "So when she gets upsets do you rub her belly and give her a doggy treat?" Or something like that.

That was first thought that popped into my head. Well, that and Gollum out of LOTR. Blush

happiestblonde · 15/08/2010 17:28

No please don't. There are so so many reasons to avoid Precious as a name. Having said that I'm a big fan of Pandora which DP is trying hard to throw out, sadly

MamaLazarou · 15/08/2010 17:55

It was the name of the serial killer's dog in Silence of the Lambs.

moondog · 15/08/2010 18:00

If Mama hasn't put you off nothing will.

belgo · 15/08/2010 18:03

Precious McKenzie. Didn't do him any harm.

serenity · 15/08/2010 18:12

There was a character called Precious in Grange Hill many many years ago wasn't there? It's not that unusual in London, but as people have said, it's generally used in the African community.

If you like it, use it. People will get used to it. I know a little boy called Hector, which seemed odd to start with but perfectly normal now - couldn't imagine him being called anything else!

DuelingFanjo · 15/08/2010 18:14

I would think of the recent film too, not a fan of the name.

usualsuspect · 15/08/2010 18:17

I know 2 girls called precious so not really unusual

LynetteScavo · 15/08/2010 18:20

There is one in DD's call.

I'm not keen.
