What do you think of Precious as a girl's name? It's listed on Mumsnet's Baby Name Finder.
would it be a blessing or a burden to go through life with this name

class.

Now I can't even type!

LibertyGibbet · 15/08/2010 18:22

I think that the woman at toddlers who called her child Prayshus (I. Kid. You. Not) and eschews saying it with fondness in favour of screeching it, usually followed by 'get your bleeding arse here', has ruined it for us all.

SE13Mummy · 15/08/2010 18:47

It's not a name I'd choose but I have taught children whose sisters were called Precious and Beauty. I felt rather sorry for the big sister - her name wasn't anything along those lines.

mumtoabeautifulbabyboy · 15/08/2010 22:09

Definite porn star name imo if you are not from African descent.

Clary · 15/08/2010 22:12

I think it's the kind of name often used in African countries (a runner in yesterday's world champs was called Blessing) but not if you are white anglo saxon tbh.

CerealOffender · 15/08/2010 22:17

lord of the rings

Hulababy · 15/08/2010 22:18

I don't like it, sorry.

bibbitybobbityhat · 15/08/2010 22:19

It is an African name, along with Blessing, and others.

Perhaps not the best name for an English child - in the same way that you might not call an English child Pablo or Francois or Aoife.

If you or dp are African then I do think it is a lovely name.

worldgonemad72 · 15/08/2010 22:53

Not my fave name sorry, it would be cute when she was a baby but it doesn't 'age' well.

qumquat · 16/08/2010 17:47

I think it's beautiful and popular among families of African descent - I've taught a few Preciouses. People may raise eyebrows if you are not African, but that's only because it's unusual, they'll soon get used to it.

RonansMummy · 16/08/2010 17:49

I just think of lord of the rings :-S

lifeinagoldfishbowl · 16/08/2010 17:51

I would think of a child with african heritage too.

lauzb · 16/08/2010 18:10

Reminded me of that Friends episode aswell!

IMO, Precious is an awful name for a child - definitely a burden, not a blessing!

I just couldn't imagine calling my child in from the garden and shouting "Precious, Precious" without wanting to shake a box of dried cat food to entice her in...Wink

But then, everyone's opinion is different

Jamieandhismagictorch · 16/08/2010 18:25

It would not be out of place here, either.

I love those sorts of names - virtue names as well

eg Mercy, Hope, Faith

SerialMom · 16/08/2010 19:01

It reminds me of Silence of the Lambs

LuluF · 16/08/2010 19:08

It reminds me of Grange Hill (Precious Matthews - I'm showing my age) and of No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency and the scary serial killer in Silence of the Lambs. Not sure I could use it.
