What do you think of Dorcas for a girl? I like it, but my family has already shortened it to Dork!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
theagedparent · 07/08/2010 15:55

I love it, surely there must be a nicer nn though

DrSpechemin · 07/08/2010 15:55

No please don't.

thisisyesterday · 07/08/2010 16:12

i don't like it, sorry.
same reason... it justmakes me think dork

Rafi · 07/08/2010 16:16

Dorcas is pretty but I thought dork too originally... maybe Cassie as an nn?

ValiumSingleton · 07/08/2010 16:32

Awful. Just about the worst name I can imagine. It makes Doris sound pretty.

ValiumSingleton · 07/08/2010 16:32

Is this thread a joke?

LaundryLyne · 07/08/2010 17:24
Biscuit
IneedacleanerIamalazyslattern · 07/08/2010 17:28

Dorcas is quite a nice name and I do know someone called Dorcas but she does get called things like doofus as a joke and does take it in good spirits but still not a nice nn choice.

NiceCuppaT · 07/08/2010 17:41

Pretty!!? I don't think so! It's horrendous!
Prefer vera, ethel, irene, enid, blanche, avis....

TotorosOcarina · 07/08/2010 17:42

Farking hell, no.

moondog · 07/08/2010 17:45

I like it, it remind me of being small and growing up in the South Pacific where there were a lot of Dorcases.

LynetteScavo · 07/08/2010 17:47

Apparently it's offered in the Bible as an "interpretation" of the Aramaic name Tabitha.

Dora for short?

TBH, I wouldn't use it.

Are you Welsh, Maffy? I think Dorcas is a lovely name - I thought about calling my DD Dorcas, but went for a safer option (because of the shortening to Dork, I suppose!)I know of a Dorcas in North Wales.

bowbluebell · 07/08/2010 19:50

I have an old school friend who is a Dorcas. It suits her perfectly as she's irrepresibly rustic (fires her own pottery, grows three types of cabbage) and she's pretty 'individual'; she could never be an Emma or Claire.

TBH, with any unusual name, people sort of grow into it when you know them well and the initial associations fade away.

I think Dorcas could be described as pretty but 'character building' as a name, but there's nothing wrong with that (IMHO!)

Bellepink · 07/08/2010 20:05

It's a shade too far for me (and I like quite a few far-out or lesser-liked names!)

I feel Edith, Tabitha and Martha are in the same vein but a lot nicer. Dorcas is clumsy(IMHO). To me, it also sounds like an adjective rather than a name! Confused

CoupleofKooks · 07/08/2010 20:10

oh i love dorcas - and to me it is a glamorous name! isn't it funny how people's interpretations differ? i think of a 1950s starlet type
i wanted dorcas for a girl, but dp vetoed ("dork")
he picked dulcie instead - which can be shortened to "dull" Hmm

we have boys so far, btw :o

quaere · 07/08/2010 20:12

No I hate it, sounds like a character from a fantasy novel

MissBonpoint · 07/08/2010 20:13

Bad bad name. Confident you can do better.

LetThereBeRock · 07/08/2010 20:59

It's hideous.

PaulineCampbellJones · 08/08/2010 08:41

Did you get the name from Lark Rise to Candleford? Just think you are unfortunately going to open your DC up to dork name calling as you say.

WoTmania · 08/08/2010 08:47

I love it.
There was a girl at school called Dorcas. Fab name.

missnevermind · 08/08/2010 09:10

Dorcas was one of the girls in Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.
So I always think of a dark haired dancer with long legs and red lipstick.
Same as CoKooks I think of somebody glamorous

Nancy66 · 08/08/2010 11:26

Unless you really want your kid to hate you - then don't.

'dorc' for short....?

TheMoonOnAStick · 08/08/2010 11:29

I'm sorry it has always reminded me of 'tortoise'.

But then I totally don't get the whole ironic old lady/old man name craze that's so popular atm.
