Hi

I really like elliot for a girl, but loads of people have told me it's not a girls name - only for boys....

Opinions please!

I like the "giving girls geeky boy's names" thing.
And if Elliot was good enough for George...

DuelingFanjo · 27/07/2010 21:13

scrubs?

valiumSingleton · 27/07/2010 21:15

I prefer it for a girl.

Also as George Elliot was really a woman, there's a certain eyebrow raising symmetry to having a daughter called Elliot.

it's quite feminine imo, so it just suits a girl better. But I'm not sure I'd choose it myself as it would bother me that everybody else regards it as a boy's name.

I like just Elle for short. NOt Ellie. And that is an obvious nn. One of the things that makes Elliot not work as a boys name is that the first syllable is Elle, and the first two syllables are Ellee!

Eglu · 27/07/2010 21:16

I love it too. DH and I have discussed it as a possible name for a future DD.

valiumSingleton · 27/07/2010 21:17

The woman who wrote 'we need to talk about kevin' makes Lionel work for a girl. I think that is another one that suits a girl.

EvilTwins · 27/07/2010 21:19

IMO it's a boys' name.

The George Elliot argument is a bit - surely she chose that name specifically because everyone would think she was male.

valiumSingleton · 27/07/2010 21:25

It's not an argument! more like a full circle......

valiumSingleton · 27/07/2010 21:26

Besides, even George, which was the name that people would have taken their gender clue from, is now used by women.

my friend wante dto call her dd Eliot but was talked out of it and really, really regrets it

there is a girl Eliot/Elliot in scrubs!

CupcakesHay · 27/07/2010 21:37

See I really like Elliot for a girl, DH not too keen, but kind of is going to let me have last pick - although I like Kirsty too... But family all really love Kirsty and aren't keen on Elliot...

Also, wasn't planning to have middle name, but if we go for Elliot, I'll pick a girl's name for middle name so people know when looking at forms, etc that it's a girl. If i go with Kirsty, then no middle name.

A friend recently had a baby girl and called it Brook Jamie - so hard to decipher the sex.

So next question - my surname's Rutherford... what works well as a middle name for Elliot?

elliot kirsty?

MrsJohnDeere · 27/07/2010 21:42

I prefer it for a girl and had only heard of it as a girls name before MN.

CupcakesHay · 27/07/2010 21:51

No - need to save Kirsty - as it's too much of a favourite to give as a middle name... in case we have another.

Although - this whole topic could be a waste of time, as i might have a boy! But food for thought, as i'm sitting here, bored and doodling in my mind!

You've been watching too much Scrubs...

meadowlarks · 27/07/2010 22:07

I think it could be potentially very cool for a girl. Think of masculine names that have come into fashion like Scout and Leigh. I personally wouldn't use it but I could see it being the next big thing in the baby name trends, especially because of Scrubs. If you go for it, you'll be trend setters.

foreverastudent · 27/07/2010 22:56

I think it sounds more like a girls name. It is probably the marion and shirley of the future.

LaundryLyne · 27/07/2010 23:06

I think of Elliot as a boys' name.

Kirsty is very nice

proudfoot · 27/07/2010 23:10

Most people will think she is a boy.

Ellis maybe more gender neutral?

ponceydog · 27/07/2010 23:12

don like it

MrsTicklemouse · 27/07/2010 23:19

I know a little girl called Ellis, which is a bit more girly than Elliot imo

LaundryLyne · 27/07/2010 23:32

How about Eloise, Harriet, Juliet?

CharlieBoo · 28/07/2010 08:15

If you go for it you'll be trend setters....mmmm not sure about that, your daughter will hate you more like....

seeker · 28/07/2010 08:23

The George Elliot argument is a bit confusing - surely it's the "George" bit that made people think she was a man? Or are there gender specific last names and no one told me?

"
The woman who wrote 'we need to talk about kevin' makes Lionel work for a girl" No she doesn't - it just makes her sound like a loon. An opinion that is confirmed if you read her articles or hear her interviewed.

Colliecross · 28/07/2010 10:15

I like it for a boy, people will assume your baby is a boy unless you dress it in pink frills.

Gleeb · 28/07/2010 10:21

Lol at Lionel Shriver loonness.
