Elliot for a girl?

Hi

I really like elliot for a girl, but loads of people have told me it's not a girls name - only for boys....

Opinions please!

No, its a boy's name and it will cause confusion.

My DD1 is Elliot! She gets called Ellie almost all the time just now but I like to think when she's a bit older she can choose for herself whether she goes by Ellie or Elliot.

For the record, I love Scrubs, but didn't even remember about the character Elliot until after I decided I liked the name. And yes, there has already been gender confusion, but she has a feminine middle name. And some people have confused her for a boy even without knowing her name and despite her being dressed in pink! I think that can happen no matter what you call them.

We didn't tell our families before she was born in case we got any looks. So they just had to like it or lump it! I think our mums might have been a bit unsure but they get to call her Ellie most of the time anyway, which they both like

Not at all fond of this, sorry. Then again, it's not a name I like for a boy either.

I know a girl called Dale, which I always think sounds v weird. There are so many beautiful girls' names available that I don't understand why you'd use a boys' name for a girl tbh.

I have a friend whose DD is Alex and she regrets it as people assume she is a boy. I think that is a worry with gender neutral names.

I have always likes Elliot as a boys name and wanted it for DS but DP wasn't keen on the Ellie thing, he felt it was too feminine. Also his name would have been the exact same as the Scrubs character.

valiumSingleton, I'm afraid I'm going to disagree - 'one of the things that makes it not work as a boys name'???? I think you've probably just annoyed every mum of a boy Elliot on here (including me!).

Also, pretty sure the author was spelt George ELIOT so no argument there unless you go for a different spelling.

Having said that OP, when he was born and we told people the name first several people wanted us to clarify if it was a boy or a girl, so I think it's becoming more well-known as a girls name. Personally I think it's nice for both. We chose it mainly because we absolutely love it but it also helped that I'm a teacher and have only ever taught lovely Elliots! So great name in my book!

But wasn't George Eliot a pseudonym/pen name as she didn't want her readers to know she was a woman?

And Lionel Shriver is not her real name either (She's really called Margaret).

FWIW, I think it would cause some confusion. It's a boy's name, at the end of the day.

I think of Elliot Reid (from Scrubs).

Also find all nicknames a little girly - Elle, Ellie.

I really don't like it. I hate it for a boy too but even more for a girl.

I think it's one of those eyebrow raising names that everyone will comment on, that in itself is a cross to bear for the name holder. I think it sounds pretty but I wouldn't use it. Too much of a burden for baby.

I would hate to be called Elliot. Why, when there are so many lovely girls' names out there, would I want to sound like a man? It just seems faddish. Also just being pedantic but foreverastudent Marion has been a girls' name for absolutely centuries, it is only by fluke in America it was used for the odd boy and now because of John Wayne people think it's 'really' a boys' name; it's not.
