We have an appointment to register our daughters birth at 3pm.
Still can't decide on a name.

Trouble is, you just can't MAKE yourself like a name if you don't.

So far have:
Sophie Elizabeth
Emily Grace
Katie Elizabeth
but I don't LOVE any of them.

There are plenty of other names I like, but DH doesn't.

Daughter is just over 3wks old and DH and I just can't seem to agree on anything.

I sat crying about it last night as I know I'll just give in and agree to something I don't really like which makes me so sad.

Have just been to register dc3's birth today, this time with certainty.

I'm another mum with naming regrets regarding dc2 so I urge you to cancel the appt, sitting on it for a while longer is time well spent.

Fortunately dh loves dc2's name enough for both of us, whilst I will never adore it, it is hers now. She does have a fuller version of the name which occasionally I try out and think gradually I shall increase its usage. My firm favourites for some years now has been Charlotte/Lottie.

Fwiw, Freya and Lily are very pretty, imo. Like the other posters I am also very drawn to one of your mn choices, Elizabeth, which has some lovely nn like Libby, Beth and Eliza.

Elizabeth Anne

LuluF · 20/07/2010 16:47

Maybe a decision has already been made one way or another?

PaintingTheFence · 20/07/2010 16:51

How are you getting on, Funkycherry?

Funkycherry · 20/07/2010 21:39

Sorry I went quiet on you all.

DP came home, saw the state of me and cancelled the appointment.
Felt like a bit of a zombie all afternoon, so maybe it was just one of those new mum days.
Going to try and get my head around it again tomorrow.

Thanks for the support.x.

Aw, sounds like you did the right thing, yes probably one of those days when the lack of sleep etc really starts getting to you!

Hope you feel better and make a decision soon. Don't stress about it too much! x

tortoiseonthehalfshell · 21/07/2010 08:18

Aw, Funkycherry. Three weeks is a hard time all round, I think. Try and get some sleep (ha), be nice to yourself, don't think about it for a few days and come back to the problem later.

For what it's worth, you and your partner don't have totally incompatible taste, you both like the same sorts of names, all is not lost.

Skidoodly - Edel? Really?

Just something simple like Rae or Kim would be good.

I also think it best to cancel the appointment.

If you go ahead and really wish you had picked another name, you can as it is possible to change the first christian name/s within one year of registering. You would then be issued with a new birth certificate with the new name on. The long b.cert would still show the original name but with new name at the bottom. The short b.cert would show just the new name.

Hope this helps

Funky,

When I was in your situation - Dh and I couldn't agree a name for DD2, we ended up going for one we both liked rather than loved. However, I ensure that I chose one with lots of nn potential, and so was able to play around with nicknames. After a couple of years, we fell into a nickname for DD2, which now I totally adore and thinks really suits her.

A name like Elizabeth will give you that. You have got so many options for thinking about nicknames, - Eliza, Ellie, Beth, Bess, Betsy, Libby, Liz, Lizzie...

You can then spend months finding a shortening that perhaps you agree on more.

(Incidentally, my DH doesn't really like the shortening we have for DD2, so her uses her full name, which he likes more and I use her shortened name. We're all happy :-) )

Jackstini · 22/07/2010 10:15

Glad you cancelled fc, let us know when you do decide

bluecardi · 22/07/2010 10:20

what about Sophia, Katia, Isabella.

what about a name from your family - from way back. That way you can say she's called after your ggggran or whoever you choose.

Funkycherry · 23/07/2010 00:58

Got another appointment at 11:30am.
Feeling calmer about it all now - even though we still haven't decided.
Will update you all tomorrow.

Good luck! Let us know what name you decide on! It's so hard when you can't choose and nothing seems to fit. Remember that whatever name you decide on, you will love it because it will represent her and she will grow into it. I love the name Kate, it's very simple, not too fussy but also very classic, can also be short for Katherine. So many pretty names to choose from! xx

browniebear · 23/07/2010 10:18

this might not be very helpfull but when we were thinking of names we came to the conclusion that not many people like thier own name so probably whatever we chose our dcs wouldnt like them anyway! few suggestions

annalise
amelia
alice

browniebear · 23/07/2010 10:19

oh and good luck im sure your dd will suit whatever name you choose

Funkycherry · 24/07/2010 17:09

We've done it!
But here's how the drama ended.....

As I said we had an appointment at 11:30 Friday. DH booked whole day off work so we could go together and he could have a long weekend.
Get to registry office still undecided. Sit in waiting room and come to decision. I'm really teary at the 'we're naming our baby' milestone.
Get called into office and as I sit down I say "we're still not sure" at which point the registra asks what the problem is and spends the next few minutes saying we shouldn't do it if we're not sure and sends us on our way.
DH is livid with me for talking on his behalf and making us 'look like idiots.'
I'm just numb, wondering how we just got talked out of naming her.
We don't speak for an hour.
Eventually when we talk, I agree to call office and we manage to get second appointment that afternoon, 3pm.
2:45, we're sat in carpark still trying to decide. Narrow it down to two and I tell him to decide as I'm not sure.
Sat in office, it comes to giving the name and he says 'Katie Elizabeth.'
So its done and we fill out the rest of the form. Registra prints out the draft form and I say 'Are you sure?' Registra then says to me 'Look at her and say 'she looks like a Katie' and I pause... She then asks 'what was the other choice?' We tell her Sophie. She leans over desk, looks at DD in her car seat and says 'She does look more like a Sophie, but I'm not allowed to influence you.'
So we change our mind at the last minute and change all the paperwork.

Our Daughter is therefore Sophie Elizabeth (Having been Katie Elizabeth for about 15mins)

Going to copy this thread to a word document and put it in my keepsake box because I will never believe this ridiculous story in a few months!!

Thanks everyone.x.

Ahh, I think thats lovely, and as much as I love the name Katie I could never have coped with people dropping the 't' when saying it. Sophie is gorgeous!
