Restarted making art over the last month or so. Just starting out with watercolor paints and really loving them. These 3 pictures are my latest work. Can you give me your honest opinions please.

@coffeeandchoc

Anyone saying it wouldn't be their choice of art, can I ask what sort of subjects you do like, to help me expand the sort of things I paint. Thanks
I like abstract art so I love the colours in your Zebra painting but I don’t want the zebra if you see what I mean
Bunnybigears · 06/08/2020 08:00

It reminds me of the kind of thing produced by A level or very good GCSE art students. I would enjoy something more unique or with more depth.

SummerPeony · 06/08/2020 08:12

I think they’re brilliant, well done Op. there is a whole Disney community on Instagram / Facebook who would pay for Disney paintings btw. Especially if you personalised them or added quotes. You could set up on Etsy!

Stuckforthefourthtime · 06/08/2020 08:16

Your eye for colour is lovely. You'll improve further if you work on your proportions and perspective. Proper training is really really helpful here.

If my sister did them I'd put them up in a child's bedroom, or if one of my kids did it I'd put them downstairs, but right now they're not works I'd pay fo.

Tadpolesandfroglets · 06/08/2020 08:18

I think they are okay and see potential there. I think change your subject and be more adventurous and try and find your style. Sadly it’s almost impossible to make a living from being an artist but as a hobby, it’s great for the soul.

thorliscious · 06/08/2020 08:24

I genuinely do like the first 2.

Belle is good but In my opinion she need a face to stop it looking creepy.

The flower is ok but I agree it looks a bit like a very good GCSE piece.

CountessFrog · 06/08/2020 08:25

I’m no art critic but I think you are so talented.

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 06/08/2020 08:26

i like the zebra painting

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 06/08/2020 08:29

the flower is very well done.

You would need to be very very careful selling anything that is potentially had a copyright or someone else’s IP. A lot of Etsy stores / Disney sellers have found themselves with cease and desist letters.
coffeeandchoc · 06/08/2020 09:02

Thanks for all your opinions. Always useful to here from everyone.

I don't believe I have said I ever intended to try and sell anything, but thanks for the advice that it's only at gcse level.

Like I said I am doing this for me and it has been helping my mental health.
I probably shouldn't have posted.

Thanks again

Why do you say you should not have posted? If it has been helping your mental health then keep on with it. The pictures are lovely, do what makes you feel good, wish i could paint like that. Be kind to yourself.

Tadpolesandfroglets · 06/08/2020 09:13

No, probably not. It’s very difficult to have your art criticed and you need a thick skin. Fortunately it’s all subjective and if you like it and are happy with it, that’s all that matters.

CountessFrog · 06/08/2020 09:17

You’re a great artist!

DDemelza · 06/08/2020 09:20

I couldn't paint a fence so I am in awe of anyone who can do what you do. I love the succulent drawing, and the animals. Keep going.

I like pictures of animals, plants, classical scenes, people reading books, trees, the sea..

Stygimoloch · 06/08/2020 09:23

I love the animals and would definitely be glad to hang then on my wall. I know nothing about the technical aspects of art but I love the colours and the overall effect.

GingerScallop · 06/08/2020 09:27

Firstly, congratulations for trying something new and putting yourself out here for constructive feedback. You are brave. You are also highly talented and have a wonderful sense of colour and flow. I can't draw to save a life and desperately wish I could.
Now to feedback. Will focus on the animals. The colours are fantastic as in what they essentially communicate. Feature placement could be better. Notably, leopard's snout seems a bit large compared to eyes which are a bit too close. Ears on zebra feel misplaced and face strangely shortened n a bit bulging. I suggest you date the paintings, set them aside and keep enjoying and experimenting. You can repaint the same at some point or different pics of leopard and zebra and am sure you will be amazed at the progress you will have made. Try different styles: realistic copies, abstracts, imaginative illustration, various subjects to find your tribe. Keep us updated. Above all, never ever stop (enjoying it) because you are amazingly talented.

stormsurfer · 06/08/2020 09:27

I think they are wonderful and you are very talented. To get all those colours and vibrancy must be tricky. The only thing I would say, but this comes from a total non painter, is that maybe they need more space around them on the page? I don't really know what that's called but I think that would frame the subject better IYSWIM.

mummmy2017 · 06/08/2020 09:28

You can 100% paint.
I can't even do a tree.
Do what you like.

Dollycarton81 · 06/08/2020 09:30

A friend of mine paints very similar things and she has sold a number of hers. We're not talking mega bucks I think the most expensive one went for about £45 but it all adds up. Definitely think you could make money from this hobby if you wanted to go down that route.

You are very talented.

BlueSlice · 06/08/2020 09:31

The proportions are slightly off on all of them. (But they are much better than I could do, well done OP!) If You were wanting to improve I would read up on, and practice, proportions.

BlueSlice · 06/08/2020 09:33

Just to add: it really is worth practicing. If you go on r/artprogresspics you’ll see how much people who practice improve over just a few months.

Chitlin · 06/08/2020 09:35

OP, if you are painting to help with your MH then good for you.

Posting your work on the internet for strangers to critique will be disastrous for your MH. Probably best to keep it entirely private.

Strugglingtodomybest · 06/08/2020 09:37

I think the leopard's eyes are amazing! And to counter that, Belle with no face is creepy AF!

Keep going OP, I would love to be able to paint.

coffeeandchoc · 06/08/2020 11:35

Thanks for all the comments. I will keep at it, because I am enjoying creating, but I should definitely avoid sharing work unless I really am ready to accept all comments on it.

I do appreciate everyone who has made critiques and hope that I can find a style that I truly believe in and that is all my own within this new medium.
