Daisies - is this ‘commercial’ enough to sell?

Hi everyone,

I’ve recently taken up painting again and am trying to put together a portfolio to submit to galleries. Not sure whether this is ‘commercial’ enough to sell...? It’s currently unframed. I picked some daisies from my pony’s field, arranged them and painted them on a whim. It’s not actually a painting I’d hang in my own house, so I’m not sure if anyone else would either. So I’m just asking if you could imagine it hanging in anyone’s house?

Not sure what the current ‘trends’ are either - having looked at galleries, there’s a massive selection.

I mainly paint horses in soft pastel, oil, gouache or acrylic and one gallery has suggested I just stick to this subject. But there are already so many excellent equestrian artists in this area I’m a bit Hmm.

My confidence is rock bottom. But I do need to earn extra money to pay vets bills for pony!

Thoughts appreciated. TIA Smile

Ooh yes good idea about flower names.

I agree about the zingy, contrast zebra painting. You could do a series of those and id buy them!!

You can join Artfinder.com free but they take 40% commission, plus vat is deducted, in the UK. I'm not clear on shipping. Do they just trust you to ship it from your home.
@OddBoots can you tell me how your order arrived?
They have 10,000+ artists - no pressure there !! You would need to have good search terms I would think.

OddBoots · 22/05/2020 13:02

My order was posted directly from the artist. I had no idea they took such a huge cut, I am not sure how much of a cut is normal.

You're really talented, OP. The pony is excellent - it looks totally professional.

I agree with a pp. If you want to do portraits, just be really clear about the sort of photos you need. Don't struggle to work with bad ones; say they won't do.

I totally love the daisies although I love the pony too. Paint/draw lots of different types of pictures, don't think about what sells. I know this sounds cheesy but 'art comes from the heart.' Just do what you love, if people want to buy it then fine. If you're good, and you are, you'll find your place in the art market.Smile

You are so talented!! the works are great!

DraughtyWindow · 23/01/2021 12:24

Thank you AnneButNotHathaway! I’m part way through doing this one and have had interest from people wanting prints. 😊

I was prepared for a very different thread when I clicked Grin. So often people ask about selling their art but have awkwardly little talent. Your paintings are impressive!

I think going for local specialities would be a good approach. Collections of local flora or fauna in sets or from different angles in threes. Also agree that high quality prints are the way to go.

VettiyaIruken · 23/01/2021 12:32

Pretty.
Would sell I think if you put them as prints to frame and hang, and also as cards for example.

Problem with selling the actual paintings is no bugger wants to pay anything close to what it actually cost in terms of your time but if you could sell both the original and prints in various forms then it's be financially worth it imo

SomersetHamlyn · 23/01/2021 12:41

Not my taste but you are a very talented artist and I am sure you can sell these.

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 23/01/2021 12:42

They are amazing, I'm impressed!

midnightstar66 · 23/01/2021 15:20

They are all fantastic but I wouldn't have the daisies or pony on my walls as they aren't the style for my house. Pictures in the zebra thing I would absolutely love though, maybe you could do more animals in that funky style too?
