Daisies - is this ‘commercial’ enough to sell?

Hi everyone,

I’ve recently taken up painting again and am trying to put together a portfolio to submit to galleries. Not sure whether this is ‘commercial’ enough to sell...? It’s currently unframed. I picked some daisies from my pony’s field, arranged them and painted them on a whim. It’s not actually a painting I’d hang in my own house, so I’m not sure if anyone else would either. So I’m just asking if you could imagine it hanging in anyone’s house?

Not sure what the current ‘trends’ are either - having looked at galleries, there’s a massive selection.

I mainly paint horses in soft pastel, oil, gouache or acrylic and one gallery has suggested I just stick to this subject. But there are already so many excellent equestrian artists in this area I’m a bit Hmm.

My confidence is rock bottom. But I do need to earn extra money to pay vets bills for pony!

Thoughts appreciated. TIA Smile

the daisies are nice but would be better as a card or a print. Especially if you have a series of 6 different local flowers that can be bought as a set of prints. I would never buy an individual painting of an individual flower for my wall, but they can look great as a group of pictures.

you can also put your work up on Artfinder if you want to sell across a wider area than your local gallery.

Kiki275 · 12/02/2020 21:50

I think it's beautiful but not something I'd personally buy to hang on my wall. I would however buy it printed on notecards etc. especially if part of a small collection x

74NewStreet · 12/02/2020 21:51

You’re very talented, op. That horse is stupendous!

74NewStreet · 12/02/2020 21:51

I hope you make a fortune 😀

puds11 · 12/02/2020 21:52

If you want to sell plant drawings get on some of the botany Facebook pages. We love plants and art Grin

DramaAlpaca · 12/02/2020 21:55

I love the horse and the daisies. I'd buy and display the daisy picture if it was small, I love botanical prints. I've bought artwork done by an MNer who showed her pictures on here, she sold via Etsy.

Satsuma2 · 12/02/2020 22:01

I'd buy it.

Satsuma2 · 12/02/2020 22:05

Just seen your other two and they are fantastic. The zebra is amazing, so is the pony. I so wish I could be as good as you.

Twillow · 12/02/2020 22:12

You have talent, but you need to find something that makes you stand out from the crowd. The daisies are pretty but the green background looks a little old fashioned.
What do you LOVE doing? If it's the zingy style aka zebra, could you incorporate that into your horse or pet portraits so they're not just a lifelike reproduction (I can't see the point of that personally, I'd just as rather have an ACTUAL photograph if you see what I mean). So for example pet portraits that are modern, slightly stylised, not with a white background? Or the same with flowers? Also a service where you can have the image as mugs, coaster etc not just a print?

TheWordmeister · 12/02/2020 22:17

I have horsey mates that would love the pony.

The daisies are not my thing, nor the zebra.

Gingerkittykat · 12/02/2020 22:31

I love the zebra and would definitely buy that.

I like the daisies, can tell you are talented but would not buy it as a print. I might buy the picture on a greetings card though.

goldpartyhat · 31/03/2020 11:29

If you want to find beautiful animal images, including horses that are high quality, try Unsplash. All royalty free and no copyright issues.

I get the custom work comment. People send me the most appalling low quality images of their dogs!

Try selling on Etsy. It's pretty cheap and might work. Masses of highly talented artists there though.

FortunesFave · 08/05/2020 03:15

I work in a gallery OP. Paintings are seriously hard to sell. Especially the more traditional type.

Prints are where you'll make some money. Look at having good quality Gicle prints made.

OneNewName · 18/05/2020 14:27

I like the daisies but the pony and zebra are amazing.

EdwinaMay · 20/05/2020 07:06

You need to do more than one pic imv. So daisies, buttercups, something else.
The zebra is amazing.

@FortunesFave - why can't they sell, is it the price?
I was looking at prints at 30 pounds each whereas the paintings were 3,000. I would be selling paintings online at 30 quid, would they sell do you think? Painting is just a hobby and I've run out of space on my own walls.

Pluckedpencil · 20/05/2020 07:16

Paintings in galleries are overpriced. I bet people do buy reasonably priced paintings from Etsy and local cafes etc. Yesterday I was actually looking to buy a pen and ink of flowers from Etsy and came away empty handed! Couldn't find it.o wanted something like your daisies but only in own and ink with one splash of colour

Pluckedpencil · 20/05/2020 07:20

I'd agree as well that a choice of paintings on the same theme (horses, flowers etc) makes for a better display. You are so talented. If you like doing the flowers, I do think they'd sell, even though the horses show you have incredible talent for anatomy in your art. Beautiful.

OddBoots · 20/05/2020 07:24

I have only just bought my first piece but I have started finding favourite artists on Artfinder, I plan to get a couple more by the time the year is up. It might be worth looking there even if that isn't where you eventually sell as you can see what kind of things have sold.

Barkingfuckingdogs · 20/05/2020 07:26

If you're advertising op, then it's worked on me cos I'd definitely buy your work. I love all 3 in different ways! Your work would sell for sure but it's a crowded market and you've got to find ways of getting your art in front of people. Maybe when/if local markets in the right areas start up again, you could have a stall. That could work.

TwistyHair · 20/05/2020 07:32

I agree with others about the daisy. Do a few together on a triptych to make it more of a statement. Sell it as an unframed print. Or greeting cards. The other two are wonderful. If you’re having trouble with people sending poor quality photos for portraits, then just be really clear about your requirements. And if the quality isn’t good enough then ask for a better one. Alternatively you could do more stylised portraits rather than photo realistic ones. The the quality might not matter. Galleries are obvs all shut at the moment so lots of artists are moving online anyway. Have a look and try to get a website going. Or fb. Or anything. You have real skill.

minmooch · 20/05/2020 07:33

I'd buy your zebra painting. I love the colours. It's not too African Safari style not too animal study - it's vibrant and snazzy!

TwistyHair · 20/05/2020 07:34

Also, do you do other animals? Dogs, cats etc. Might widen your market like that

justanotherneighinparadise · 20/05/2020 07:36

You are very very talented. Love them all!!

Godzillasonice · 20/05/2020 07:37

I love the zebra it’s the sort of thing I’d put on my wall. The other pictures are amazing too but not my style.

daisypond · 20/05/2020 07:37

You’re very talented. As flower names are popular, could you do some of the popular ones that people might buy for babies or children? Violet, Iris, Ivy, Holly, Rose etc?
