Stitch and bitch thread #9. I have pressing concerns

Welcome welcome!

I've not made anything for ages after I screwed up the same thing twice. I'm gonna have another blimmin crack at it though! I've reconnected with another hobby and work is seriously getting in the way of everything I want to do, darn it.

Definitely short!

About 17" cropped length, pretty much. I'd consider about 21" to be a standard short but belly covering top, more like 24" for hip length, 28" for properly bum covering tunic length.

Thanks @OperationalSupport I’ve found with T&B patterns so far that ignoring the measurements and doing my normal size works pretty well. I’ll try to get some cheap fabric to give one of the cardigans a try. I’m also still contemplating the Ogden cami.

Sewliketosew · 16/08/2024 11:09

I think I'll just finish it and Chalk it up to experience. I wonder if there's a way to easily lengthen the pattern, I'll look up a tutorial. I found adding the facing tricky as I couldn't work out which way up the fabric was being stitched so totally forgot about the loop and making sure it was out of the way. I'm sure I can rescue it one way or another...

CrimsonAlligator · 16/08/2024 11:53

@Sewliketosew there should be a line on your pattern to indicate where to add length. Cut the line, put some paper under it and add the desired amount of extra length. (I’m pretty lazy so generally add the width of a ruler as a starting point as it’s easy to make sure the added length is perfectly even that way)

Depending on the cut and your body shape, you may also need to add some extra width at the bottom as the longer length will -obviously- end up a bit lower on your body where you may need a bit more room to move.

Sewliketosew · 16/08/2024 18:51

Just re the ogden cami @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie I downloaded a similar one off itch to stitch. It is similar but has a crossover/petal back which I thought added interest. Will use more fabric though I suppose! Possibly won't get round to making til spring now as I'm thinking about autumnal things.

Do you mind me barging in to ask you clever knitters to help a novice knitter?
Knitting my first pair of socks and socks and it was going well until I got to this instruction. In simple English what do I do?
Sm patt to market, sm, ssk, knit to 2 stitches before marker etc...

Do I just knit around the whole four needles?

Feeling thick!

The knitters are thataway ➡️but yes, you have made the heel flap, picked up the stitches either side of the heel flap and are back to knitting in the round, decreasing to make the gusset (forming that triangle bit next to the heel flap) and getting back down to the original stitch count for the foot.

Thanks @PickAChew
I'll re post thataway x

bookbook · 16/08/2024 21:33

I'm a sock knitter @faffadoodledo - PickAChew has sorted it . If its your first pair , its always tricky ( I use the Winwick Mum Sock along tutorial )

twobluechickens · 16/08/2024 22:20

Just finished my third Aiko top and second with with bias bound neck and armholes rather than a facing. Perfect in the warm weather, I’m just going to keep churning these out!

I need some help from the pattern search experts. I’m looking for a strapless bra pattern but I don’t want a structured one with cups. I was sure there’d be a bandeau pattern somewhere but if there is I can’t find it.

In other news my order from poundametre arrived. (I know, I know but they had some plain viscose lengths I just couldn’t resist). The light blue is a vibrant turquoise IRL but in line with the pic. 2.4m long rather than 3m. The royal blue is a very insipid airforce blue but the right length. The black is 43” wide instead of 55” and I’m not sure it’s viscose. All three are dirty and more crumpled than normal. They are sending out a replacement for the black but not the others. They really have gone downhill rapidly recently. I’m unsubscribing from the mailing list so I don’t get tempted again.

I can’t edit my post to add a pic of the order so it’s here.

I’ll use it all but I had serious plans for the royal blue 😥

I had a run of bad orders from pound a metre, it was almost always the same name on the picking slip. They just grabbed whatever is closest, not actually what ordered.

OperationalSupport · 17/08/2024 14:30

@Jins my first thought for bralettes is usually Madalynne but I can’t see any strapless designs, and searching for a wireless strapless bra pattern stumped google - barely any results there.

Some playing with search terms turned up this bandeau bikini top pattern which might suit?

Jins · 17/08/2024 18:22

Thanks both!

I’m currently fiddling with the Peppermint Mag Brontë bathers pattern as I think that may work as a bandeau. It just needs to be a bit more supportive and I think a second vertical dart may help.

123ZYX · 17/08/2024 20:39

Has anyone made a kids dressing gown and can recommend a pattern? The only ones I can find are Simplicity and they tend not to have very clear instructions

OperationalSupport · 18/08/2024 18:29

In what may be my fastest fabric-to-garment transformation ever, I’ve just got the hem left to do on a BHL Anna from the linen blend I picked up in Walthamstow on Thursday. I took 10cm off the skirt pieces before cutting and it’s still very long and I’m 5ft8.

I adapted the Waves & Wild Hit Chocolate, made dress length, add a bit to the centre front but cut as 2 rather than on the fold. Made a belt, added loops to the side and put pockets on. It worked well, shame DD2 wasn’t keen on the fabric!
If you want a pdf pattern (I’m all about Independent pattern companies) I would look at Love Notions, Made for Mermaids or Ellie and Mac.

123ZYX · 18/08/2024 21:33

@Daffyyellow thank you for the recommendations. I'm tempted by the Love Notions one, although they all look good

Jins · 19/08/2024 06:04

I was going to suggest the Love Notions compose robe for kids. I haven’t made it but I have made the adult one. It’s pretty straightforward and instructions are detailed. I think there are woven and knit options so it’s quite versatile.

Thank you. That's the decision made, then 🙂

@123ZYX There are usually links to videos in LN pattern instructions - very helpful

CrimsonAlligator · 20/08/2024 13:23

I fell into a tailoring rabbit hole after trying to work out what to do with the broderie anglaise I bought. Considering the weather at the moment, I think my best bet is to park it for now, but after watching way too many tailoring videos on YouTube I will at least know what to do when the time comes.

I’ve been applying some of my newly learnt techniques to the welt pocket on my linen trouser. It’s amazing - the properly tailored version uses almost twice the layers used in standard instructions, but somehow creates a flatter pocket. Magic!

All of this has however seriously slowed down progress on my trousers. Think I’m in week three now! Hopefully worth it for good looking pockets 😂
