Stitch and bitch thread #9. I have pressing concerns

Welcome welcome!

I've not made anything for ages after I screwed up the same thing twice. I'm gonna have another blimmin crack at it though! I've reconnected with another hobby and work is seriously getting in the way of everything I want to do, darn it.

Quilt is almost finished. I am hand binding the back and have attached a photo because nobody in real life will appreciate how near I’m managing to do it. Years of embroidery coming in useful.

@Allthegoodnamestakken

That is sooo neat. Hand stitching the binding on is the best.

Jins · 17/07/2024 20:09

Lovely work @Allthegoodnamestakken

I often hand stitch binding and quite often I hem by hand. I think it was the only skill my mum managed to pass on.

I’m waiting for some stretch lining fabric so I’ve been filling the time with testing the peppermint Brontë bathers bikini top. It’s a straightforward sew and I’m hopeful

PickAChew · 17/07/2024 20:21

Lovely neat binding.

I don't do much hand stitching any more because the hands don't like it.

twobluechickens · 17/07/2024 22:04

Ooh that’s lovely @Allthegoodnamestakken ! So neat.

I finished my wearable toile of McCalls 7330 and like all big 4 patterns there is way too much ease (I went by finished garment measurements which don’t seem to correspond to the actual pattern pieces!). Have now taken it in and it’s a much better fit, but the crotch is a bit weird so might need to take it in a bit there too. Glad I did a tissue fit first though - I had to add three inches to the back trouser pieces, god knows what it would have looked like if I hadn’t!

Allthegoodnamestakken · 18/07/2024 07:34

Thankyou, I found it really relaxing, sadly while binding I found some spots where the fabric had frayed beyond the stitching so need to try and fix that otherwise the whole thing will fall apart in the wash. A lesson in being very careful about which fabrics I choose to quilt with.

I've been making a strap to hold my hand luggage to the handle of my suitcase. That’s two bits of shock cord that I cut off an old rucksack gone from the stash.

Now I can demonstrate that all these bits and pieces that I save are actually useful 🤣

This looks like such a handy and well made gadget!

Nothing to report except a pair of full length Safiya trousers made this morning in this gorgeous fabric https://www.ladymcelroy.co.uk/lm-cobra-corsage-noir-viscose-challis-lawn-remnant-3mtrs No photographs yet, but the fabric was a dream to sew with and feels really lovely and silky next to the skin.

Hello! Looking for some pattern suggestions if that is ok?

I've bought some green gingham fabric (from Simply Fabrics, they have an online sale on!) And would like to make a dress. Ideally V neck with a wide waistband, balloon sleeves? Something bold. Would prefer no buttons on front, happy to do a back zip not side (have a bosom that makes me look like a galleon in full sail, buttons and side zips do not work well with me)

Any ideas?

I'm going to look through my stash of Ottobre and Burda magazines to see if anything but would love some other options!

Thank you!

twobluechickens · 20/07/2024 15:23

Sorry @Hiddendoor , I did laugh at “galleon in full sail” but I know exactly what you mean. Cashmerette are designed for ample bosoms - the Roseclair dress might fit the bill?

twobluechickens · 20/07/2024 15:25

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie that fabric is beautiful. I was eyeing it up too but I don’t have anything I need to make with it.

Hiddendoor · 20/07/2024 15:28

Thanks @PickAChew and @twobluechickens - I've got a good wrap dress planned for some jersey amd have a tendency to make the same thing over and over so need to challenge myself with not doing a wrap for the gingham.

I like those sleeves, will look at the closet core range, I'm sure I saw something in their patterns before!

I'm going to do a deep dive into style arc too.

DiggoryVenn · 20/07/2024 16:14

@Hiddendoor how about the Kika dress from Fibre Mood? Not sure what you meant by the wide waist.

I have just finished sewing up the Alberthe from the latest Fibre Mood ready for a party in a couple of weeks' time

Hiddendoor · 20/07/2024 16:23

Love that fabric @DiggoryVenn

I like the Kika, hadn't seen that before, but I need a defined waistband otherwise I feel like I should be sounding off fog warnings and shouting "avast, me hearties!"

The sleeves and v neck are exactly what I want!

PickAChew · 20/07/2024 18:20

You could extend the bodice to waist length then add a belt, I suppose.

Jins · 21/07/2024 08:15

That looks perfect @PickAChew. I’m very tempted by that myself!

I was going to suggest Waves and Wild Kinjarling with a wide tie belt but I think yours meets the brief much better.

bookbook · 21/07/2024 10:41

Well , I really didn’t need any more material , but cracked when I saw this 100% cotton double gauze at £9/m yesterday whilst I was out and about. I am going to make some sundresses and sunhats for the twins 😊. I decided it will need washing first - not used double gauze before , so want to be prepared for shrinkage

PickAChew · 21/07/2024 12:22

It frays if you so much as look at it hard, @bookbook so be sure to secure all those edges. Lovely summery colours.

OperationalSupport · 21/07/2024 12:36

@bookbook they’re so beautiful! Please do not tell me it’s from somewhere I can get it online, I probably have enough fabric for my lifetime already (and hopefully I’ve still got 40+ years to go).
I’d be tempted to do the reverse of the sunhats in something with more structure, I find double gauze gets floppy as it’s worn.

CrimsonAlligator · 21/07/2024 15:33

I made the Atelier Jupe Olivia this weekend - my inner 10 year old loves the buttons (they’re dotty!). Unfortunately they’re a bit too big and plasticky for the top, so I’ll probably end up changing them to something more age appropriate 😂

I love that fabric @DiggoryVenn . I’ve had some French terry with that pattern in my stash for a while but have yet to decide what to make with it. One day…
