Welcome back seamsters! It is soon to be September and Autumn is on its way.

Oh @pastabest I do this all the time! I think you should do the new pants. This is a hobby right? It's for doing things you enjoy and are excited about! Sorry I can't talk you down, I'm a natural facilitator. [Grin]

I don't fancy an online course but could be tempted with a face to face one someday

Welcome @CrimsonAlligator , that’s a cute skirt, it reminds me of the grainline moss skirt (for anyone who isn’t into pattern drafting).

@pastabest nothing but enabling vibes from me, given I recently did the same with the True Bias Lander (saw, stalked the #, bought, and sent for printing within 24hrs). However, I can see your concern with regards to giving off an air of clown, they are quite a voluminous shape. Everything else you’ve mentioned sewing is quite fitted around the waist and hips, so perhaps worn with a close fitting T-shirt they’d still feel right for you?

CrimsonAlligator · 04/10/2022 16:28

You’re right @SBAM and you’ve reminded me that that is a pattern that is already in my collection. I think I made it once, but never finished it....sounds familiar?! 😂

Now I’m wondering if I’d be better off trying to find that pattern, rather than draft my own 🤔

dubyalass · 05/10/2022 09:52

I’ve just tested positive for Covid so have had to cancel my weekend plans. I’m feeling okish so am actually looking forward to doing a bit of sewing instead!

I'm actually slightly jealous of your free weekend for sewing 😁

Hope you don't feel too rough and aren't missing out on too much.

Thanks! The timing is rubbish from a work POV but if I'm up to sewing I'll definitely give it a go!

Jins · 05/10/2022 12:51

Hope you have a mild case @dubyalass

Jins · 06/10/2022 09:53

The chair is finished! Before and after collage hopefully shows the seat doesn’t dip at the back any more

I had leather filler, spent £17.95 on repair paint and £15 on upholstery springs and I’ve now got the chair my back wanted

dubyalass · 06/10/2022 11:34

What a fantastic transformation! You've inspired me.

Jins · 06/10/2022 12:17

It’s easy enough but very time consuming. I found three light coats of the repair paint worked better than a thick coat. I used a sponge for most of it and a paintbrush for the fiddly bits. I used a hairdryer on each coat but left it for 24 hours between coats. I wish I’d discovered the springs needed work before I coloured it but the coating is pretty robust and stood up to taking the cover off the cushion.

I’ve never tackled anything like this before but it doesn’t scare me now. With the chair being free there wasn’t a lot to lose

NutellaEllaElla · 08/10/2022 18:42

Hey, how do you search for patterns for stretch fabrics?

I still haven't settled on a project for my green stretchy fabric. I've been mostly taken by patterns that are designed for woven fabrics 🙄They just seem to be prettier? Have more details to them as well?

I should have some sewing time tomorrow which i should use to start a toile for 2 projects in the queue.

Have you tried the filtering on the goldmine? They had a blog post today about stretch patterns as well

NutellaEllaElla · 08/10/2022 19:16

The goldmine? Is that a website?

I think the previous poster might mean ‘the fold line’

What kind of thing are you hoping to make? Ellie and Mac patterns are predominantly for stretch fabric, so you could take a look there.
what kind of stretch fabric is it? Pattern recommendations will be very different for a scuba to a viscose jersey for example.

123ZYX · 08/10/2022 20:05

Sorry - autocorrect and lack of proof reading. That should have been fold line

NutellaEllaElla · 08/10/2022 20:41

Ah thanks for the clarification, i'll look at the foldline.

What kind of stretch fabric is it - I bought it in store where it said nothing about what the fabric was. I'm not v knowledgable but from googling i'm wondering if it is almost like a stretch satin. I don't know, basically it's smooth and silky, light/medium weight, very drapey and not very stretchy at all actually.

I've been liking this dress, and this one and to be honest, i'm thinking I could probably use this fabric with those patterns.

OP posts:
NutellaEllaElla · 08/10/2022 20:42

It's not as shiny as satin though.

I'm glad you told me about the fold line website, it's great and I think i've found a stretch pattern that is similar to the Belle woven. It's the Agatha by Fibre Mood.

NutellaEllaElla · 08/10/2022 21:07

It's too low cut though

That's the beauty of making your own clothes surely! Un-low cut it Grin

NutellaEllaElla · 09/10/2022 07:53

In theory yes! But in practice i'm still quite beginner. I've not done it before, I need to follow instructions, not very confident gah.

CrimsonAlligator · 09/10/2022 09:22

That’s a lovely dress @NutellaEllaElla . The description says that you can overlap the front pieces, which would raise the neckline a bit. Making that kind of adjustment should be straightforward, but I totally understand feeling a bit nervous about making changes to a pattern you’ve never made before.

Great job on that chair @Jins !

I haven’t managed to made much progress on my skirt yet. All I’ve done this week is measure myself and buy a roll of drafting paper and waste a huge amount of time searching for the perfect fabric to eventually make it in. It’s true that buying supplies is a totally different hobby from actually doing the work 😄

dubyalass · 09/10/2022 09:40

The Fold Line is a brilliant website, but there's too much choice! They do good videos on YouTube too.

No sewing happening here yet this weekend - hoping I might be well enough today as was just too weak and feeble yesterday. Got a knit top cut out so just need to thread the overlocker and crack on. Shouldn't be too physically taxing.

NutellaEllaElla · 09/10/2022 10:27

I'll probably give it a try.

Look after yourself @dubyalass if you don't feel like it, just chill.
