Crochet star blanket - help!

So I'm very new to crochet but hoping to start a 12 point star blanket tonight using a video tutorial.

However in all the video tutorials I have looked at the blanket tends to quite big gaps/holes in them like in the 1st photo whereas I'd prefer a tighter pattern like in the 2nd photo.

Is this just a finer wool/needle or is there a different technique?

Thanks

I think they are the same blanket just different tensions

so long as you keep to the same increase at the point and decrease at the valley I suppose you could make it less gappy using trebles instead of chains....like you would for a solid granny square instead of the normal gappier version

....like a ripple type blanket?? iyswim?

I agree these are the same blanket. I started with this after coming across it on another thread on here, would highly recommend.

Thanks, I think as it gets bigger it will look better as there'll be more trebles and less gaps. I love the bright coloured one in the thread you attached, it looks amazing!
