Hello all!
I looked for a thread but the one I found was from 2015!
Anyway, I have within the last few days found that I really enjoy coloring in. I have no fancy pencils or books as I’m a beginner but wanting some recommendations please and to also be reassured that I’m not silly! I currently use crayola pencils and have an animal coloring book.
Thanks all!

@PinkDaydreams I've finally found the picture I've been looking for since yesterday! This is a mandala that i split into sections just to test the colouring pencils. Not really much of a much easier between them, hopefully that will reassure you somewhat. I'm just looking for my other pictures now Grin

Saw quite a few lovely adult colouring books in WHsmith just a couple of days ago.

You're not silly, it think it's great.

I've seen people get really lovely results with sharpie pens. They do a big set with 20/30 colours

RoseMartha · 29/08/2020 17:31

Yes I find it really relaxing. I like Johanna Basford books. I use colouring pencils, fine liners, felt pens and gel pens. Sometimes one type of colour sometimes I mix types of pens etc.

NoRoomInBed · 29/08/2020 17:38

Have a look at colouring heaven. New issue every month and so many different things. fair price too. I use any pencils I like the look of.

I got distracted browsing photos of baby DC 😂. Here are some examples of things I've coloured @PinkDaydreams. The bird is a good example of what I was saying yesterday, about colouring over many lines using the same colour (instead of being too concerned about filling each space separately!). The tree was done in oil pastels, and the leaves are a closeup of another one I'll attach next because I can only attach three at one time Blush

A couple that I took pictures of as works in progress (WIP) and also the front cover of one of my books that I started filling in using gel pens. You really can use anything! If it's a sharpie, alcohol marker or watercolour then it's a good idea to put a sheet of printer paper under the page you're working on to prevent transfer. Not an issue for front covers though!

I love doing adult colouring books. I find the concentration needed really helpful in completely distracting me from other rubbish.

Although the quality of my efforts is quite dismal compared to all of yours 😆

PinkDaydreams · 29/08/2020 19:00

Oh they’re lovely!! I didn’t even think of felt pens, can you still blend coloured together with a pen?
@grey12 I love sharpie pens, the colors are so vibrant! But I’ve never really known what to use them for apart from writing out birthday cards!! 😂

Thanks Pinkdaydreams - I've had a lovely couple of afternoons remembering how much I like colouring - this is my latest effort!

I've tried felt pens and Sharpies before, and you get a much nicer "pop" of colour, but on the whole I prefer layering the colours and I'm not sure you can do that with pens (or at least not with the ones I was using). Plus they bleed through to the other side of the page so you have to pick your favourite picture and do that one!

It's always at this time of year that I start wondering if it's too early to get out the Johanna Basford Christmas colouring book. I usually try to do one or two pages each year and they're the only ones I've ever really put up on the wall. I keep the finished ones and get them out again each year.
You've all inspired me to persevere with the pencils though, usually I'm too impatient.

SuckingDownDarjeeling · 30/08/2020 20:27

@PinkDaydreams I've managed to find the video that I followed to test my pencils on the mandala! She reviews crayola and the faber-castell that i showed you yesterday. Also she shows how the far more expensive brands fare against the cheaper ones, it's a lovely video to watch and follow along to (when you have the time of course!)

SuckingDownDarjeeling · 30/08/2020 20:40

@LoopyLoulley that's a good idea, normally I remember about it mid-December when things start to become 'Christmassy' and by then it's too late to achieve much at all Blush.

Hello! I have found my people. I’ve been colouring since 2015 and I absolutely love it. I use Prismacolor pencils, Polychromos, and recently Caran D’Ache Luminance pencils. I also use chalk pastels for backgrounds sometimes.

I learned pretty much everything from a lovely lady called Colour with Claire. 100% recommended her YouTube channel.

Apologies, this thread disappeared from my ‘I’m on’ list.
@WhatTheFuckHappenedHere that is some very beautiful work, you’re amazing!!! You say you’ve been coloring since 2015, were you any good at art before hand? Also, how long on average does a piece take to complete?

OP posts:
WhatTheFuckHappenedHere · 10/09/2020 20:06

Thank you @PinkDaydreams
No I was always very average at art in school and I still really cannot draw! They vary hugely, I never do a whole one in one sitting, I’m often doing them on and off for absolutely weeks. I would say roughly 3-10 hours if I was doing them solidly. I find it so relaxing!

Madein1995 · 01/10/2020 13:42

whatthefuckhappenedhere oh my god theyre fantastic, they look like proper art and really professional! Puts mine to shame lol, will post pics after. But wow yours are fantastic

snowqu33n · 01/10/2020 13:54

Another vote for Johanna Basford here. Also love Olivia Whitwoth’s “Dreamweaver” and Nao Sakamoto’s “Animal Friends and their Wonderful Home in the Woods”

Madein1995 · 01/10/2020 15:39

My latest colouring 😊

@Madein1995 thank you! Anyone else want to share pictures? I love this thread

@WhatTheFuckHappenedHere I love that astronaut pic! It’s amazing. What book is it from?
