Selling handmade/upcycled clothing/projects

I know it's really hard to make a living at selling handmade and upcycled projects and I make them alongside alterations, repairs and making home furnishing

So where is a good place to sell, what do I need to know to be legal (like the inners of cushins must have a fire retardent label but the cushion cover doesn't)

What do you do about washing - most of mine would be hand wash I reckon so just a label?

Help?

Oh good - glad it's going well - I posted a long reply while I was travelling and it didnt post!

DD behaves a bit like that and she is 21!

I didn't get the bias Sad but I picked up some new shelves for my room - picture later
Do we get to see anything yet?

Well, if you’d like to! This is the colour work in progress. Also the prototype bag - though I may yet add a lining, and it’s not a great photo. It’s just propped up in the kitchen!

Don’t think I’ll be knitting much today as I got absolutely no sleep last night thanks to an insomnia attack! Got a couple of hours this morning when DH took DS out but feeling pretty groggy and not too creative.

I love the colourds of the yoga bag but the knitting is exquisite!

Wow!

Thank you! That’s really kind of you to say 😊

Nope - it's true!

Fitted my new cupboard in - still got some massive tidying to do

Helped Dd do a bag for herself and dyed a kaftan for my mum

I've been offered a 'shelf' in a handmade store fairly locally gulp - have to have a think

OP posts:
HennyPennyHorror · 13/08/2019 10:32

Will they charge you a rent for the shelf?

KatyMac · 13/08/2019 11:12

Yes £10 a month but I don't know yet if there is commission as well (yet)

OP posts:
KatyMac · 14/08/2019 07:41

No additional commission but card fees are added

No theft insurance - thinking about that......

But a fair amount of stock will be tied up and I'm not sure if they can be advertised for sale on-site if they are there

Finished glove / mitt number one!

Just need to do the other one now, hoping it will speed up now I’ve determined my basic pattern Smile And then block them both, of course!

Definitely one to consider carefully, that shelf thing. Will you be signing up for a minimum amount of time? Have they got any info on footfall through the shop? And if there’s no theft insurance - how good are they at keeping on top of things?

Ok, this one is unfinished, and it's un-ironed but I think it's a success....

That is gorgeous. It looks like you could sell it as a flower girl dress. Definitely a special occasion dress.

Not sure about Recreations by KatyMac. It sounds like recreation...as in hobbies and relaxation. Maybe it needs to be Re-Creations by KatyMac

KatyMac · 16/08/2019 09:09

Sorry @Spudlet, I didn't see your photo til just now - that's amazing! I hadn't realised you weren't using a pattern, I thought you were changing colours for an existing pattern sorry!!

Thanks @HennyPennyHorror

And good idea about the hyphen!

OP posts:
Spudlet · 16/08/2019 09:28

No need to apologise! Thanks, I'm glad you like it. I'm not 100% happy with it but I should be able to make improvements as I go along with the next pair and it's also good practice for the colourwork jumper I'm going to knit for myself when I can decide on which wool to use Grin

I think the hyphen is a good idea and I love that little dress! I would have adored that when I was little, I would have felt like a flower fairy!

Lovely! Could you borrow some small children to run round a green space in them Katy? You'd get some lovely images for selling.

KatyMac · 18/08/2019 08:47

Great idea - I just need some!

I've been pondering the idea of making things and selling them for years, as an added income when we in the future move to the countryside, but always found it a bit daunting. Especially the bits on what rules to adhere to (fire retardant, labels etc.)
Reading your thread is very inspirational and I wish you all the best of luck!
