Applique Lycra?

I want to applique lycra shapes on to lycra

But the shape doesn't stay stable - how can I make it stay the right shape to sew? I don't want to add stiffening underneath as it won't stretch will it?

You need Iron on stabiliser the link won't go enclosed for me but eBay UK sell it.
It needs Yao be applied to the reverse of the main fabric and the right side of the addition so it can be removed ( so it is not sandwiched between the fabrics ).

I bought a sports bra & knee length leggings for DD & I fancied having a go at embellishing them

I thought it might be for her !
Hope she is doing well.

She is having a ball - I am thinking of doing dance costumes & leotards & selling them but I need a few practises to see if they are any good

No point selling if they are crap/only suitable for home use.....

Bugger. Even with the paper .? Is it worth contacting the blogger I linked to. She mentions needles and sizes. I always use a new needle each project.

Nooooo!! She is having a hallowe'en thing - but I have to create a pseudo 'Tiana' costume for that with a leotard and a sort of hula skirt, you know Disney Princess meets sex

I think my designs are too small or I cut the paper too small or my machine is a bit erratic with the zigzag stitching (I don't know the stitch she mentioned)

So I think I'll service the machine (maybe a new needle like you suggested - it has been doing sequins - eek!!) & have another go....in daylight!

Ah sequins . The separate ones or the "printed on" ones ?
The fabric with the integral sequins leaves the needle very sticky ,I found to my cost, I had to keep wiping the needle clean with "sticky stuff remover" from Lakeland .

The long strings of them I zigzagged either side but missed occasionally

I wonder if more practise on scraps might be an idea

One only ever done jewelling from ready made stencils .but I do like the effect.

Lycra is a bear to work with, well done so far.

I'm not sure 'bear' is the word I'd use

Ball pint needle, stabilise the back. I've read about, but have never used stretch thread.

Make sure you have bondaweb between the appliqué shape and Lycra to hold it in place before even attempting to sew

But up close it isn't really

Katy if you've got a spare hour go on YouTube and look up Brad Griffies. You have to listen to him waffling a lot between him saying useful stuff. He's an ice skating costume designer. For his appliques he uses a temporary spray adhesive called 505, its made by Madeira. It lasts about 24 hours. Advantage is it completely disappears meaning you don't lose stretch like you do with Bondaweb which doesn't stretch.

I've used it when I needed to line a skating dress and it works brilliantly. My tip would be spray your piece you are going to stick (not on your self healing cutting board because it will be a bastard to clean off) and wait a few minutes for the glue to go off because its too stick to handle at first.

Also try a clear plastic applique foot on your machine. It will be short, clear and have a wide gap for the needle to swing. Helps with zig-zaging on appliques and attaching strings of sequins. I used it to sew ric-rac to satin, meant my stitches didn't go off the trim.

Orangeandlemons I asked a sewing machine engineer what the difference is between a Ballpoint and a Stretch needle. He said Ballpoint is for 2 way stretch and Stretch is for 4 way stretch. I also use a stretch needle. I tried a ballpoint once on a polyester lycra and got skipped stitches.

So called stretch thread will not produce a stretch stitch because the upper tension disc will put the thread under tension and so eliminate the stretch, according to my old manager. I used to work for a well known haberdashers/sewing machine stockist in Essex.

I have a stretch needle & I am using Bondaweb but my applique are quite small so might not need the stretch

I love the idea of a see through foot - going to see if I can order one

I only got my cutting board yesterday, so I'm being very gentle with it & John Lewis didn't have a knife

I bought my knife from quiltedbearltd on ebay. To save money I bought a DAFA rotary cutter and changed the blade to a Olfa blade which was razor sharp cut myself first time I used it .

I also bought a stainless steel ruler from someone else on ebay .

I use Jalie patterns and buy my tracing paper by the metre from my local haberdashery shop ex employer much cheaper than buying small packets. WHSmith do a flexible ruler which is helpful for tracing curves but its not marked with measurements so not suitable for drafting from scratch.
