How much would a Mumsnetter charge to knit DD a cardigan please?

DD is 6 but really more like 7-8 in size as she's tall and long of limb. I want a navy blue cable knit cardigan for her with buttons and no hood.

Is there anyone who could tell me what it would cost for them to knit this please?

ooh if I could knit I'd do it for just cost of material. ..

You've given an indication of the kind of pattern you'd like but you might want to have a browse on Ravelry, I think you can look through the patterns without being a member. I did a search on cardigans, child, cabling and came up with this list.

I'll put an MN knitty friend onto your thread, she might do it for you :). I would, but the road to hell is paved with good intentions and I'm almost there! She'll be a teenager by the time I'd get it finished!

oh btw I didn't suggest others should do it for free, but that I'd be happy to. sorry if it read that way!

Not to rain on your hopes, but at minimum wage, that'd cost around £100. Sadly, skills like knitting don't seem to be deemed worthy of even minimum wage.

Zing, I'm quite pleased to see your second post.

What you're talking about is actually quite a lot of work OP. It would take me at least a month to make that, working in the evenings mostly, and I'm quite an experienced knitter.

Can you get your daughter's chest size? It will help people judge what size to knit, and how much wool to buy. Have you thought about what material you would like? That will depend on all sorts of things - how easy care you need the cardigan to be, whether your daughter has allergies or sensitive skin.

I'd really recommend you signing up to Rav, it's where a lot of the patterns are sold as downloads. There's a huge selection, and you can narrow it down so easily.

Oh that's a lovey idea Claw. I guess it would cost you the price of the pattern (unless they already had one), the wool and the time. So it would be completely variable.

Given how long that would take to knit, plus cost of materials, plus the cost of pattern, you'd be looking at well over £100. If you were expecting me to come up with a pattern, up past £150 at the very very least.

I re-read and realised it could've been easily read in a way I didn't mean at all!

I sew a lot, especially patchwork quilts (and also x-stitch and crochet) so I know how much work goes into handmade things!

I can do it for you. Depends on the wool you want but would probably be about £20/£35.

I never realised until I took up knitting quite how long it took (I know I'm pretty slow). It's a very under-appreciated craft!

I would actually highly recommend learning yourself, I taught myself about 5 years or so back, just so I could make things for my children and now I love it. I used a patons book called Start Knitting which has simple projects like scarves, easy hats, cushion covers etc in and looked up lots of videos on YouTube when I got stuck.
Give it a try!

Worth looking up "handknit" on ebay and seeing what comes up. Might be something similar to what you are looking for.

Well thank you all for your input. Caulk I'd feel bad taking you up on your offer when others have said they couldn't do it for less than 100!

I looked on Ebay Fairy and nothing there but for babies.

I knit for fun and that amount would cover the cost of the wool. I enjoy the knitting but I don't usually wear the stuff I make or anything like that, so it's more fun to knit for others.

How about you make a donation to wooly hugs or something like that.
