How much would a Mumsnetter charge to knit DD a cardigan please?

DD is 6 but really more like 7-8 in size as she's tall and long of limb. I want a navy blue cable knit cardigan for her with buttons and no hood.

Is there anyone who could tell me what it would cost for them to knit this please?

Would it also cover the cost of a pattern Caulk? Or do you need to buy one in?x

can i suggest claw that if someone is willing and has the time that you buy the wool you like and have it sent direct to the knitter? that way they are not out of pocket and you will be happy about the feel of the garment. and then treat the cost of the work involved seperately (either payment or donation).

ClawHandsIfYouBelieveInFreaks · 19/11/2014 13:58

That's a very good idea wooly. I could buy the pattern too?

I've definitely got one, but I'm away this week and it's at work. Could you find some pictures of ones that you/dd likes and send them to me so I can see the kind of thing you're after.

I run a knitting group so if the pattern I have isn't quite right someone else would be bound to have one.

It would take about two weeks, and I agree about the wool. Or even go into a shop and look/feel the wool and tell me what you like. House of Fraser and John Lewis have haberdashery departments

I agree with Woolymum :). But also, if you have no idea what wool to buy, I'm sure the knitter can help you to choose, it's probably a bit daunting if you don't know where to start! Same with a pattern.

X post with Caulk x

If there is a particular pattern you've found you're really welcome to send that to me. Otherwise just send some ideas.

Ravelry has lots of free patterns.

CaulkheadUpNorth · 19/11/2014 16:49

Zing - I'm one of those terrible mnetters who doesn't actually have children! But sssh, don't tell!

ClawHandsIfYouBelieveInFreaks · 19/11/2014 16:52

Caulk thanks so much! I must first OK it with DH but I will PM you later one...I wish I could be crafty...I love all things handmade but when it comes down to actually doing the things I'm like an eejit! Grin

I also would like perhaps to have some wrist warmers....I;ll have to check the budget etc and maybe look in the shops for wool on Sat when I go to town...there's a very good wool shop near me with helpful assistants....so they'll help me if I need it.

Ok fab. I'm away at the moment so I have limited wifi and no actual signal. If it takes me a while to reply then that's why!

I do wrist warmers All The Time and have masses of lovely wool I could do them in. They are my standby present for people!

ClawHandsIfYouBelieveInFreaks · 19/11/2014 16:55

Ooh lovely! Thanks so much Caulk I'll PM you later thenx Flowers

Well done for offering Caulk.

I agree with others, knitting is an undervalued skill. I knit and crochet things to sell but long ago realised I could only ever charge enough to cover the cost of materials.

If anyone wants something small made, I am happy to be contacted.

CaulkheadUpNorth · 19/11/2014 17:01

I work to the principle that if it's something that could be done in a day then I charge for it (per yardage). That's the same as if I took on an extra day doing some freelance work. However if it's something that I would do over a week or so whilst watching telly then I don't, just the cost of the yarn, and count it in the same way I would a gift.

HoobleDooble · 19/11/2014 17:17

I have this pattern which I don't mind copying and emailing if you want it. I used it to make a jumper for my son last year. I'd have offered to do it for you, but have arrived late to the party, I knit in the evenings to keep my hands out of the fridge.
