Help me choose some colours/wool for my knitting patterns

Ok, after binging on this site www.thevintageknittinglady.co.uk/ I have purchased the following patterns.

This may be for my sister (it is supposed to be 'funny') but would red and white be too cruel? (It is a land girl pattern if anyone is interested).

And maybe this for DP

The blurb says they are both DK, and I would like to use a wool, or wool blend, any ideas for wool that could be used for these? I am sooo crap at chooseing colour combos. (Plus I don't think anywhere does a yellow flecked green wool these days!)

Oh the first one is brilliant. Grin. It must be done in red. Very elvish.

I use this seeds website to help put colours together.

Red would be lovely for the hood (with cream not white) or a retro combination like olive green and light yellow

For the flecked yarn you need to find a Donegal tweed with "neps"

fossil971 · 04/09/2013 10:46

Are you knitting for fun or for them to actually wear? What's your budget?

fossil971 · 04/09/2013 10:54

knit picks

http://www.greatbritishyarns.co.uk/acatalog/Soft-Donegal-Shade-5202-Olive-Green.html a bit thicker than DK

Rowan Tweed

Do check the tension

You could match with a plain wool (washable) DK like:

Really the best bet is to choose a colour that suits the person and goes with their other clothes - but is just slightly more interesting. Does he normally wear jeans, what's his colouring?

Again with decent links!

Last post honest. If you made the man's jumper so the tweed and plain were very close in colour, and it was a bit longer/ more contemporary cut, he might even wear it!

PukousMucous · 04/09/2013 15:26

Sorry to hijack thread OP but MasterFlea that website is amazing.

Thanks for all the ideas.

Sister does a lot of camping with crusties so would probably wear it even if in neon orange with a pumpkin design on it (she is 21 if that helps). I got pattern through today and it recommends dark blue with pale blue, but I think red and white or green and yellow would be cute.

WRT to jumper, I don't think I will inflict it on DP but will instead inflict it on my Dad for his 60th which gives me a year and a month to make it! He is pale with dark auburn hair and green eyes and sometimes a ginger beard. Wears glasses either tortoiseshell or with no frame.

I am thinking maybe a plae grey tweed like this www.johnlewis.com/rowan-tweed-yarn/p359088 with this on the dark bits www.johnlewis.com/rowan-tweed-yarn/p359088 or this www.johnlewis.com/rowan-tweed-yarn/p359088.

Or it could be white www.johnlewis.com/wendy-merino-dk-yarn/p360575?colour=Birch%202365 with this on the dark bits www.johnlewis.com/wendy-merino-dk-yarn/p360575?colour=Birch%202365

And I may make this for DP www.theretroknittingcompany.co.uk/images/13jan11/bestwayB3000a.jpg in white. Or is that going to be vvvv camp?

But after looking at Fossil's links I now I want this: www.greatbritishyarns.co.uk/acatalog/Palette_Shade_Tarragon.html#a2540 and this: www.greatbritishyarns.co.uk/acatalog/Jamiesons-4-ply-Spindrift-286-Moorgrass-.html#a12346341

@masterflea I have tried using that website before. and it is brill. But none of my colour combos ever look that good!
