Where do you buy your fabric?

I really want to feel and see fabric when I'm buying it, I work pretty close to a John Lewis with a large haberdashery department but I'm sure that's not very cost effective. I don't really have any shops locally that I know of selling fabric, where do you buy yours?

O, I would reuse the old fabric from the used clothing or other used items, anyway that can make surprise in some sense, guess you can have a try on that too.

Search online for haberdasheries, you might be surprised - if you work near a JL chances are you live in a fairly busy area so there's bound to be a fabric shop nearby. They are usually on side roads and you wouldn't notice them unless you knew about them. A quick google search will tell you.

oh thanks for all those tips, will start searching for Haberdasheries. Bringmeroses I work on Oxford st and I'm sure as rents are so high around here that my fantasy tiny-stuffed-to-the-gills-indpendent haberdashery wouldn't be able to afford it.

Fabric land shops are great, and very reasonable. I know they have shops in Kingston and Brighton, but I think there are other branches.

HeadFairy Goldhawk Rd has several right by the tube station - I was recommended to go here by a dressmaker (from N London) for my wedding dress fabric. Easy walk from Shepherd's Bush too.

I googled fabric retailers and was surprised how many there were in my area. None of them are in 'shops' they all have out of town small warehouses on business parks I would never known existed.
I got the fabric for my curtains, which was pretty much identical to JLs choices for about fifth of the price.
Ones near me do both clothing and upholstery fabrics.

What is the fabric for? I'm currently engaged in making a tonne of bunting and have been buying old duvet covers and curtains for next to nothing at charity shops to cut up - works really well for things like that but I appreciate isn't that helpful if you're making clothes etc!

I second Goldhawk Road too. One of the shops there sells genuine Liberty fabric at a fraction of the price. Great haberdashery stall in the actual market as well.

A real shame that the council/Westfield developers are trying to force those that run most of the shops down this end of Goldhawk Road into selling them so they can extend Westfield.

Oooh Goldhawk Road sounds promising. We're just about to move from there, so perhaps while I still work in that area occasionally I should check it out!

Littlermissstan For a variety of craft projects really. I'm just starting out and buying fabric piecemeal seems a bit expensive. I've made a couple of little things, quilted bags, dolls bedding etc. I've got a lovely duvet I'm going to cut up to make a patchwork quilt, it's got some really pretty embroidered squares I'm going to use, but I need something to use in between my squares.

Eventually when I'm feeling confident I'm going to alter a roman blind we've got which is too short, but I'm loathe to throw out because it's really lovely so I guess I'll need some more heavy weight linen for that (because that's what the blind is made from - I'm going to add a border to make it longer)

There is no where cheap to buy fabric in central London but if you want fancy stuff to drool over get yourself down to the Berwick St area, loads of gorgeous stuff down there! Also there is a very famous fabric shop Macculloch & Wallis on Dering St.

I'd third the Goldhawk road if you are looking for bargains.

I buy most from Goldhawk Road too - can walk there. IKEA can also be great.
And I upcycle clothing too.
